My Father hears of the Loss of Gowrie
[letter pasted in the volume]
Marshlands
Mon Cher Louis
I recd Yours of with its
disturbing information respectg
Savannah River disaster & I can
refer to little or nothing in mitigation
of the state of things there. I presume
the men are all gone. altho it is possible
some one or two of them may after a while
come back. As for the Women & Children
from the scarcity of provisions for feeding "Sherman"'s Army & their uselessness
to the Enemy I don't see that they will
have any inducement or encouragement
to join them. The only information
I can get on these engrossing subjects
can only come from You & I request You
to write me all that You hear respectg
Savannah River I have an Overseer
for Silk Hope. It looked well in Bandy's
returning to the Plantation to see what
he could do. I hope if captured he may
be released, being over age & a non combatant.
We are all quiet & comfortable here. But
I can't help thinking that in the Spring
I will have to look out for a safe retreat
for the family and in the uncertain March
of events, I don't know where they will be
in safety
Yours [illegible]
Chs Manigault

over 700 acres of the finest Rice Land, all in one compact
body; with an adjoining Island of about 60 acres in
wood; 10 large double negro houses and a dwelling
opposite, on the Georgia highland, about a mile back from
the river of about 750 acres of Cotton, Provision and
