trips up and down the River, to and from Savannah. I inquire
of one of our former Negroes where were the greater portion of
our old Gang. His reply was that Mr Taylor had sent word he was planting
this day & would pay any of our our Negroes who might be disposed to
assist in "Bacon & Rice," & as most of our fields were sobbed (through
the neglect of our before mentioned friend "Jack Savage" in not
having replaced the large Trunk Door) and no work going on, Most
of our People had gone over. He told me there was much of this
going on at present upon Savannah River, & that a Negro frequently
worked a few weeks on one place & changed locality with another
in this way preventing being bound down to the same Plantation
all the year round.
Of our former Negroes, whom I saw, were the following: Viz
1. John, Our last Driver, now a "Foreman" with General Harrison
2. Nancy Hunt, His Wife Formerly fine looking, now much neglected
3. George, Cooper & once a Driver, at present a "Foreman" with General Harrison.
4. Betty, His Wife.
5. Betsey, George's Mother. A very Wicked woman (said to have poisoned several Children)
6. Charles, Our Trunk- Minder & once Driver, Now a "Foreman."
7. Tommy, Field Hand. Came to see me in Savannah, Wandering about Hilton Head
8. Catherine, His Wife.
9. Jack Savage, Mentioned sufficiently in foregoing.
10. Hector, My Chief Boat Hand and a great Rascal
11. Billy, formerly Carpenter but no intelligence.
12. Scotland, half Brother to Billy & a fine Man, my Cook during the War.
13. Hector, known as "Big Hector." A fine Man, at present a "Foreman"
14. Betty, known as "Brister Betty" and Wife of "Big Hector".
15. July, Prime field Hand, Lost a leg, Wounded during fighting on River, taken to Sav'h & leg amputated in a Yankee Hospital. Said to have been shot by a Confederate in a boat whilst attempting to escape.
16. Kate, July's Wife.
17. Casar, A little Boy we had with us at Augusta as Companion for Louis until the end.
18. Ishmael, Very intelligent, once Driver at present a "Foreman."
19. Abel, Brother to "Nancy Hunt", once almost crazy, after effects of Cholera.
20. Simon, Smart, in my Cook. Great Rascal.
All of the above with the exception of "Tommy" I spoke to on the Plantation.
