Dr Pritchard who lives on Mr Daniel Heyward's Plantation
opposite me says Mr H plants this Spring 350 in Rice & 40 dry culture.
Mr Habersham informs me that A. Heyward
at his Ogeechee Plantation has about 300 Negroes 130 Prime
plants about 6000 Acres but from miserable management
& a bad overseer only makes last season 24000 Bushels Rice
a few years ago before AH bought the whole of it from his
two Broth in law viz in 1839 they made 40,000 Bushel, this year (1840)
that he took possession in they made 35,000 Bush which at
80 cents sold for $28.000
Expenses A Heyward told me were
8000
leave net income that year $20.000
This year 24.000 Bushs @ 60 $14.400
leaves this years Income $ 5.600
if the Expenses are the same 8000
Mr McAlpin informs me () that all the
tract of Land lieing a little distance from the Carolina shore
on Savannah River is of a black mould loose soil
somewhat like Bay land, but not having the fibres & decayed vegetation &c
which Bay land has in general. It will burn & so
wanting in Consistency & adhesion that it will crumble
down when it encounters a freshet &c, &c. He says
this land must be cultivated with little water
& plowed a shorter time than the clay. Lands
that after 5 or 6 years in Rice culture it must
then undergo a change in dry culture every 3d year
that it is apt to fox (turn red) & take the smut
That this can observed by the rice assuming
a dark dull green colour when it must be
immediately flowed for a short period or it will
deteriorate & fox
Mr McAlpin (the most experienced Planter I know of) says
that the Plantation of 600 acres the upper section of Isla Island
for may years planted by Mr Hugh Rose can now be bought for $10000 that if he was younger & had
only that sum he would go into debt for $50000 worth
of Negroes to cultivate it & he should consider his fortune
certain. (this Place is deemed too high up the river & liable
to freshets
