Washington January 9th 1822

Sir

I presume before this time you have seen Mr Hogg -- who was fully authorised to settle, the judgment I had confessed -- It was uncertain at what time Robert Jones would go to Raleigh -- was my reason for sending the note by Mr. Hogg. It is certainly a very hard case upon me as the administrator had not offsets -- and if I had known it in time I should have made the proper defence -- the County Court of Halifax had adjourned earlier than was expected, that Mr Burges might go to the assembly. I therefore had no opportunity of seeing Mr Clark as he had left town before my return. I presume however that Robert Jones and another Endorser will be considered good for tht sum --

Mr Hogg is authorized to reconvey if Cook discharges the Judgement-- the mail is about to close I am with much respect yours HG Burton
