Petersburg Jany 28th 1822

Thomas Ruffin Esqr.

Sir

I hold against
William Underwood of Chatham
County & long since due; a note
for about $100.

I should wish if there was a
probability of your collecting it,
to trust it in your hands for the
purpose, and have been advised
to apply to you as a person ac-
quainted with his circumstances
if you think the money may
be made, by a suit or other-
wise, you will please give me
a line for return of mail, and
I will immediately enclose to
you the note to do with it
as you think best.

Yrs respectfully
