of ceremonies --Dispersed & met again at 8 PM at Carson Opera House -- Big banquet to the Pioneers by the Legislators -- the members & not the Legislature as a body -- Splendid time -- Collation with champagne etc -- Fun over at 12 -- was at Circe's Carson Exchange with many of the Comstock crowd -- Slept there -- Bed 2 --

Wednesday March 2

Same -- Rose at 8 -- At 9:30 was with the rest of the Pioneer crowd & our picture taken standing on the Capitol steps, South side -- Big group -- about 30 in it -- Took evening train for Va -- Wrote up the Pioneer banquet -- Nearly 2 columns -- Bed at 5 --

Legislature Adjourns Sine Die Third House Gov Davis' Reception

Thursday March 3

Variable -- Sixtieth and last day of the Session -- Both Houses industrious so that they recessed at 4 PM -- Evening session -- both house -- Assembly at 7, and Senate at 7:30 -- lots of spectators -- "Third House" occasionally in the short recesses which were taken while waiting for messages from either House -- Bob Briggs of White Pine and Sharon of Storey were the presiding officers of the 3d House -- by turns -- Very funny -- At 12 the gavels fell and the 13th Nevada Legislature adjourned sine die -- I went up to Lieut Gov Davis' house to reception of legislators -- State officers etc -- Collation, punch, wine, etc -- Big crowd -- Left there at 2 Bed at

Cohn's dry goods store near Sweeney's -- 2 matches -- 1st between -- Avery and Jack Campbell, champion light weight of the Pacific Coast -- 13 rounds -- Queensbury rules -- Hard fought battle -- Boxing gloves, but stuffed back so is about same as the naked fists -- Campbell victor -- Both young men less than 30 yrs old -- and match was between Brady & Trumbly -- same sort -- Both light weights and about 20 yrs old -- Carson boys -- 13 rounds -- Brady victor -- Both bloody battles, especially the last -- The first match took the gate money -- ($5 admission) Second -- purse made up --

Legislative Wind-up Report Pulling out Scrap

About 50 persons present including quite a number of legislators -- Speaker McDonell, Boyle, Egan, Briggs, Poujade et al --

Friday March 4

Clear & pleasant -- Rose at 8 -- Was at depot and saw the morning trains come in -- on time -- Went to the capitol at 10 -- Wrote most of day on report -- of wind up of the session -- About 2 1/2 columns of it -- Legislators busy cleaning out their desks etc -- & getting out homeward -- I bundled up my desk contents to take to Va &

Mrs Stenhouse's Book

left it at Harry Summer's saloon near the depot -- Sent my letter to Enterprise by conductor Jerry Bray -- Took evening train for Reno -- Met George Stenhouse at Reno depot -- He gave me a book just issued by his mother, "An Englishwoman in Utah" -- Had long chat with him -- Home -- found all right there -- Bed at 10 -

My Report Cut down badly "The Mikado" Frank Ward's Mine

Saturday March 5

Same -- Rose at 6 and went to Carson -- About town -- Yerington extended my pass ten days -- To Va on evening train -- Went to theater -- "Mikado" by the Pyke opera troupe -- Fine -- Big house -- Bed at 1 -- My report in Enterprise this morning cut down to less than a column --

Sunday March 6

Same -- About town -- Evening Frank Ward came to my room and got me to write up report for him on his La Plata Ore mine, Gold Hill to the President, John H Dickinson, San Francisco -- Getting it incorporated and stocked at the West Crown Point Mining Company -- Also wrote his opinion to the company, through Dickinson as to the best way to work and develop the mine -- Took 4 hours -- Went to Enterprise office and had talk with Taggart at his rooms over the Enterprise office, where Cohen has been living -- Bed at 4 --

Charley Ockel Sick Reno

Monday March 7

Clear, and Springlike -- The beautiful snow is rapidly disappearing -- It makes traveling along C street, however, yet for teams, PM I was out on South C street and called in and saw Charley Ockel at his saloon -- Has been nearly dead from kidney disease and partial paralysis for the last three or four weeks, but is a little better, and able to walk around a little -- Busy at odd jobs at home most

W S Hobart Andrew Lawson

Wednesday March 9 The same -- Morning train to [Va] on time -- PM and evening wrote letters -- One to W S Hobart, S.F. asking a lease for Andrew Lawson and myself of a portion of the Chollar surface workings -- 300 ft deep & from 100 to 600 feet long -- Took it to train to mail it -- Saw Major Tim Storer off on a four months visit to California. Has been clerk at International Hotel for years -- Very old and decrepid & liable never to come back -- President of the Society of Pacific Coast Pioneers -- Also wrote letter to Andrew Lawson, American Flat, enclosing copy of my letter to

Friday March 11

Same -- Went to Carson & back -- The first carload of the Pioneers' cabinet arrived at the State Capitol this morning from Va -- stuffed animals principally -- Evening about town awhile -- Bed at 2 -- Got 200 lbs Wellington coal from Gold Hill today -- It is English coal -- Tried it this evening -- Like it as well as [Cannel] coal or better -- Burns well, but has less heat -- Looks some like Rocky Mountain coal, but is better -- It is clear coal, and goes all the ashes --
