1884 catarrh Parsonage evacuated Maddrill's family arrive

Monday September 15, 1884

Clear, cool and very pleasant -- Bothered considerably today getting a team to come & haul away the rest of my things from my old room in the parsonage -- [illegible] Wagen finally came about five PM and took them, half a dozen boxes, two barrels, etc., up to my cabin -- Evening down town short time -- Bed at eleven -- Have been considerably with nasal catarrh & sore eyes the last few days -- The parsonage is not completely evacuated, as far as I am concerned -- Maddrill went down to Battle Mountain Sunday morning to meet his family & came up with them last evening -- They occupy the parsonage with exception of my old room which the Lewis Bros reserve for their own use -- Maddrills family are from Grass Valley, Cal, where they have been since they left here some months ago. They stopped a few days in Carson and Reno, visiting friends & relatives on the way here --

Tuesday Sept. 16

The same -- warmer -- About town most of the day -- Wrote letters to SD Baker, Va. city, & HS Fitch, SF besides my regular daily letter to wife -- Jane visited me at six PM at my room in [Timlin's?] Palace -- She is stopping temporarily at Dow's, but leaves for Reno Thursday morning - Evening downtown short time -- Wrote another for Gibson to copy, to GH Wilcox, atty., Washington D.C. relative to readjustment

Wednesday Sept 17

The same -- Financiering -- Borrowed $60 of Joe Miller, giving my note therefore, on demand -- $20 of John [Luetjens???], and $20 of Jas Murray -- Bought a check on Va city of $100 and a ticket to Battle M for Jane, for $9 -- gave her the check -- ticket $109 and $21 in cash, making $130 in all -- Still owe her $30 -- She leaves for Reno in the morning -- I shipped her trunks to Clifton by the 10 o'clock 'bus this evening -- Harry White paid me my other $25 making $50 in all, and I got the deed for him from Nicholls, for the 25 x 90 ft lot or [portion???] of the Parsonage ground I sold him -- Bed at 11

-- Jane leaves Enterprise 62 Took off my clothes

Thursday Sept 18

The same -- Rose at 3 AM and helped Jane to get off -- She was at Cronin's close by -- Bus came for her & I rode also down to Clifton depot where I checked her trunks & saw her leave all right on the train -- Rode home & slept 2 hours till 8, in my clothes, which I had not taken off tonight -- Was about town some today -- PM and night I wrote Enterprise letter No 62 -- Shipped it by the morning 'bus --

Friday Sept 19

The same -- after getting off my Enterprise letter this morning I slept 2 hours

till 8 o'clock -- Odd jobs about home today -- Evening down town short time -- Bed at 10 -- took off my shoes & clothes -- Haven't done so last 2 nights -- Clothes on for 48 hours -- 2 days & nights --

Saturday Sept 20

PM cloudy & breezy, otherwise a hot day -- AM was at cabin awhile -- Took old stove down & a broken cover up to foundry, to get some new ones cast -- was up twice -- PM & evening about town -- Bed at 11 -- Had a good refreshing sleep last night, & feel better today, though my catarrh troubles me much, & my eyes are very sore -- Democratic primaries today for delegates to county convention Oct 1 -- 58 votes polled in 1st Ward & 110 in 2nd -- Five in 2nd & 2 in 1st Ward were repudiated & not allowed to vote because they would not subscribe to the test called for, to support head of ticket & vote for Cleveland for President -- Poll closed at 7 & I sent telegram to Enterprise, of above points --

The same -- Odd jobs about home -- Received letter from Mrs F A Logan, forwarded from Gold Hill, enclosing circulars and complimentory tickets to First Annual Camp Meeting of the California Spiritualists to take place at Long Branch, Alameda from Oct 1st to Oct 12 inclusive -- Season ticket $1 -- Also letter from Geo W

Monday Sept 22

Clear & very pleasant -- Odd jobs about home -- catarrh bad -- Nose & head badly plugged all day -- Eyes pretty sore, but little or no erysipelus -- Bed at 11, sneezy & wheezy --

-- Exempt dues paid Warner Hillyer Enterprise 63

Tuesday Sept 23

The same -- PM rode on the motor up to the Frost shaft & took items -- Afterward bought dravt for $5.50 & mailed it to Charley Rawson in a letter to pay my Exempt dues to Sept 1 -- Evening down town -- Bed 11 --

Wednesday Sept 24

The same -- AM at cabin short time -- PM about home -- evening down town awhile -- Sent 3d letter to Warner Hillyer, Hot Springs Station N.C.R.R. *Bed at 11 -- Nose and eyes as bad as ever with catarrh -- Not getting better fast --

Thursday Sept 25

The same -- cooler & blustering -- Financiering -- Evening attended meeting of County Central Committee -- selected delegates to County Convention -- Wrote Enterprise 63 -- Bed at 4 1/2 -- Sent letter with check for $6 to A F Wakelee & Co druggists, etc, San F, for 2 dozen No 4 best English catheters flexable. Also sent letter to

-- 2 doz catheters ordered Fitch Whisky

H S Fitch San F, on Dondero-Bataligo matter -- Got letter from Wm Harrower, Hawthorne, Nev, an old Comstock friend -- He talked No Whisky to me strongly -- I took no whisky, for a very great rarity, from yesterday noon till 10 PM tonight -- First time it has been so for years -- only drank about 3 glasses of lager & nothing else -- I think I am going to reform in the drinking line -- hope so -- shall try hard -- My Gods, help me !!!

Friday Sept 26

Cooler -- quite cool, too much so for comfort in the shade -- Between 55 & 60 deg -- After got letter to Enterprise off I went to bed, at 5 AM & slept till 9 AM -- Eyes very sore, swollen & erysipilas on cheeks -- Nose badly plugged -- catarrh worse than have had it this season or for years -- Staid at home most all day -- I looked and felt so bad -- Evening down town awhile -- Bed at 11 -- Got letter from S D Baker --

Saturday Sept 27

Warmer -- Shaw's circus, a comparatively small affair arrived at noon, set up in Joaquin's corrall, at lower end of town & gave performance this evening -- Quite a fair attendance & a very good show for its size -- They came across the country

90 miles, from Eureka, with their own wagons, etc -- Going it, on the [chap???] -- George W Cassidy, Congressman from Nevada arrived about 2 PM from Belmont,
