where he spoke evening before last on the political issues of the day -- He found plenty of friends to shake hands with, and spoke this evening at the Court room to a solidly crowded & packed house -- About a dozen ladies present -- good lively discussion of the various political propositions from a Democratic stand point -- I was one of the clerks at the primary election, Republican, this PM at the [illegible] engine house in First Ward, from 1 to 7 PM -- for delegates to County Convention October 4th -- We got through in 15 minutes after the polls closed & I

-- Cassidy arrives and speaks Opening of the campaign

went up & attended Cassidy's speaking -- Big bonfires in the street front of Internation & front of Postoffice -- Cannon firing -- Great time & enthusiasm -- National Guard band played, in full uniform -- After the speaking I took a run of the saloons with Cassidy, county officials etc -- Home & Bed at 1 -- No drink after breakfast 1st time in a year at least -- & none till late in the PM, & evening -- drank very lightly -- Took cigars mostly when on the evening run with Cassidy, and in fact didn't spend a cent today -- ate breakfast at home -- cold -- & dined at Louis, at County expense --

Clear & pleasant -- though rather blustering in the PM -- Down town short time -- Evening attended circus -- The Leo brothers are running it -- It is from Bellevue,

Idaho, & going over to California -- Had a good house, all the seats being full -- Will stay tomorrow -- Better Circus than Cole's -- I also stayed & saw the minstrel show at the close, which was excellent -- circus $1, minstrels 4 bits -- $1.50 -- Home at 11 1/2 -- Bed at 12 -- Catarrh -- & eyes still very bad -- erysipelas, etc --

Monday Sept 29

Clear & pleasant -- My eyes rather better today -- nose ditto -- Allen A Curtis arrived this morning -- Met him at the bank this PM & had pleasant little talk -- Was about home most of the day -- Evening down town -- Circus gave last performance this evening & leaves [illegible] tomorrow -- Bed at 11 --

Tuesday Sept 30

AM clear & pleasant -- PM cloudy & cool -- As usual -- Bed at 11 -- a few drops of rain or snow with good prospect for plenty more of the kind before morning -- circus had fair house last evening & left this PM for the Comstock, by the old overland route, will probably take 5 or 6 days camping along -- catarrh decidedly better today --

Morning everything white with snow -- snowed all day lightly -- cold -- melted some, but about 2 inches accumulated on the streets, etc -- Democratic county convention at Court House -- I attended, [rep???] -- Made nominations of county officers etc
