Commenced at 10 AM & closed at 4:30 PM, sine die -- I sent Enterprise short dispatch giving nominations -- Evening about town some -- cold and disagreeable -- Home & bed at 11 -- Still snowing lightly --

Thursday Oct 2

The same -- Snow 3 or 4 inches deep -- Snowed more or less all day till toward sunset when it began to clear up -- night clear -- Politically buzzing about town all day -- electioneering for the Assembly -- Received by mail my 2 doz No 4

-- Catheters received Electioneering Enterprise 64 Catarrh recovering Dondero

catheters I sent $6 for the other day -- Evening & night wrote Enterprise 64 -- My eyes are all right again & nose but little plugged -- Got bad cough -- Passing off down through my lungs as usual --

Friday Oct 3

Clouds & sunshine -- trying to clear up -- chilly -- I was about town electioneering all day -- Evening ditto -- Waited till midnight and interviewed the Battle Mountain and north end delegations when they arrived by train -- Bed at 3 --

Saturday Oct 4

Clear & pleasant -- Attended Republican county convention at court house today -- & sent off a short telegraphic report of it -- Took in at 10 AM and closed at 3 PM -- The big slate won, and I got defeated -- Got 14 votes, which was about all there

Sunday Oct 5

Clear & pleasant -- at home most of day -- Evening wrote letter to Charles Dondero in reply to hat received by him yesterday morning -- Bed at 11 -- AA Curtis left for Cal this morning --

Monday Oct 6

Cloudy -- about town -- PM wrote letter to J P Jones, Gold Hill, to send me some money -- Bed at 11 -- A steady rain set in about dark & continued for couple of hours, with a few flakes of snow occasionally -- I registered Jones letter, & it goes tomorrow morning --

Tuesday Oct 7

Clear & pleasant -- As usual -- At 10 AM I telegraphed to Allen A Curtis, San Rafael, California: Will you loan me three hundred dollars for four months? No answer received -- Evening I visited Sardis Summerfield, 1st Grammar school teacher, at his room, in the Union Lodging house & had nice talk for couple of hours -- Bed at 12 --

answer to my telegram to Allen Curtis, San Rafael -- "Regret that I cannot at present accommodate you" Letter from A J Beals, Va City about a patent fust lighter he is agent for -- If I would give it a good proof in one of my letters to the Enterprise he would be "very greatful"* -- I wrote in reply that if he wanted to advertise in the Enterprise he could call on Cohen the clerk & put up coin therefor. As for his gratitude it wouldn't pay for a postage stamp -- Evening down town talking politics -- Bed at 12 --

Thursday Oct 9

The same -- cooler -- PM and night wrote Enterprise 65 -- 12 page letter & will make about 1 1/2 columns if published in full -- Slept 2 hours after supper -- then up & wrote -- Took it to hotel & saw it off -- Bed at 5 --

Friday Oct 10

The same -- Slept from 5 to 8 AM PM I was up to foundry -- got my new stove doors -- took them to the cabin & tried to fit them -- Got big [rasp???] at Starratts, but doors so hard -- chilled iron -- that I couldn't file nick in the catch -- Watson, the blacksmith couldn't do it -- Evening down town awhile -- Bed at 11 -- tired --

J P Jones, Gold Hill -- brief -- says will write more fully Sunday, when he returns from Reno, where he was just starting for when he got my letter -- Evening I sent him following night telegram: "Letter received -- Thanks -- Dont forget -- Be good to yourself" I also sent telegram to Enterprise correcting some things in my last letter -- Evening down town -- Thos W Triplett, candidate for Supt of Schools on the REpublican ticket got me to write him a short (2sticks) communication to put in the Reveille, Monday -- At 11 PM, Lieut Gov Laughton arrived on regular train. Comes to inspect our military forces and report -- I was about town awhile till the

Lieut Governor arrived -- Glad to meet again. We & Capt Newell, et al were about town short time -- Bed at 1 1/2 -- Laughton brought his wife along -- Letter from Dondero this morning --

Sunday Oct 12

Cloudy, chilly, & disagreeable, with strong, blustering wide down street -- whirling clouds of dust -- About 11 AM the band in full uniform serenaded Laughton on porch of Hotel -- at 3 PM he inspected the National Guard at their armory -- They only had 30 uniforms, so only 20 were uniformed, drilled & inspected -- 30 new recruits answered roll-call -- Laughton himself was in full uniform as Adjutant General, by virtue of his office as Lieut Governor -- The co has now about 80 members -- After inspection came election of officers, which lasted till 6 PM --

Capt Melville Curtis Stormy Lawton leaves The Maddrill Moving

Melville Curtis elected captain -- Evening I was about town short time with Laughton -- Home -- read awhile, etc, & went to bed at 12 1/2 -- At dark it commenced raining & was showery till I went to bed -- still threatening, with slight sprinkles of rain -- blustering -- letter from A J Beals this morning -- 2nd one --

Monday Oct 13

Cloudy & cold -- Gov Laughton left this morning, He will address a political meeting at Battle M this evening -- I busied myself at odd jobs about home -- Was down town some in the PM -- Evening I paid a visit to the Maddrills, the first since they have been here this 2nd time -- They are going to move into George Watt's house for the Winter -- much more comfortable -- $30 --

Rain Ohio & West Virginia Elections Stove doors

Tuesday Oct 14

Rained quite heavily early this morning for about an hour or so -- AM cloudy & cool -- PM clear and pleasant -- Was up to the cabin awhile, and down town some -- Evening down town short time to hear the news from the State elections in Ohio & West Virginia today -- Candidates ball at International this evening -- fairly attended -- Bed at 11 -- cold and clear --

Wednesday Oct 15

Clear & pleasant -- Up at the mill most of the day -- got a new fire-back of boiler iron made for my big old stove at cabin -- Got it made at the machine or blacksmith
