shop -- they tried to drill the [requisite???] holes in the hinge legs of the new front stove doors I had cast the other day but they being of white iron,

Stove doors & etc -- Financiering

harder than steel, a drill would not [illegible] them -- So I left them at the foundry, to have new ones cast -- Evening down town awhile -- Bed at 11 --

Thursday Oct 16

Cloudy, with 2 or 3 smart showers of rain in the PM -- PM I borrowed $40 more from Joe Miller, so now I owe him $100 -- Evening about town -- Home at 12 -- Shaved & got ready for a trip to Battle Mountain tomorrow -- Bed at 2 --

Friday Oct 17

The same -- Rose at 4:10, Thought I was late -- Put on my clothes quick and footed it down to Clifton -- bound for Battle Mountain -- Owing to some delayed passenger the train did not leave till 5:20 -- 1/2 doz passengers -- Arrived at BM at 10:40 --

I at Battle Mountain J P Jones comes to Austin

Met many acquaintances, including Hon Geo W Cassidy who will speak tonight at [Blossom's???] Hall -- Was at B M Messenger office awhile -- Wrote them items for its tomorrow issue -- Bi-weekly -- About 4 PM the east bound Central Pacific train came and left Hon J P Jones -- I received him on the platform and ten minutes later we left in the Nevada Central for Austin -- Hinchcliffe, Joe Gilbert, Charley [Polkinghouse???] & 2 or 2 others on board -- Had a good long talk with Jones en route -- At 9 PM we arrived at Clifton, nearly 2 hours ahead of time -- the motor

with a flat loaded with citizens, brass band, torches, etc, were there waiting, to receive Jones -- After music, all aboard! for Austin -- Unloaded at foot of

Virginia street, and Jones was taken by Farrell, et al up to the [Mollinelli???] House where he was quartered in good style -- I was about town some, and at 11 1/2 went home to bed --

Saturday Oct 18

Cloudy, with, some smart showers of rain in the PM -- Jones held audience in the parlor of the International from 1 to 4 PM -- Many visitors including myself -- At 7 PM railraod procession passed down street -- 3 flats crowded -- flags, torches, [Transparencies???] etc -- bonfires, cannon, etc -- Stopped & unloaded at International Hall soon filled, & crowds turned away -- lots of ladies present -- Jones spoke 2 hours & 10 minutes -- made the best speech ever heard in Austin -- full of interest

& information on the political questions of the day -- much applauded -- After the speaking, Jones ran the saloon gauntlet, with Farrell & others & rag tag & bobtail -- every saloon visited -- I went along some -- Home at 1 -- Shaved arranged, etc, for another trip to Battle Mountain & didnt go to bed at all --

Cloudy, with heavy rains till latter part of the PM when clouds broke & turned toward fair -- Rained all last night in Battle Mountain and most of the AM. At

4 1/2 this morning I started for Clifton on foot -- Thick cloudy and so dark I

Candidates Rustling Off for Battle Mountain

could hardly see -- Went the canyon trail and had a rough, dangerous trip but only trumbled down once & got through on time, & not far behind the 'bus -- Went into forward of the 2 coaches & settled down to slumber -- Senator Jones, Getchell, Will-iamson, Higby and Foster (candidates on the Rep ticket) were in the rear car, going down to canvas the north end of the county -- Left Clifton at 5 AM -- Arrived at B.M. at about 11 AM -- About town all day, or till about 4 PM when east bound CP train came along, & Jones took his leave of us going to Eureka, to speak Monday evening -- Had square talk with Jones. Took train for Austin, at 4:10 with Bill

Hon Wm Woodburn Republican Demonstration

Woodburn, Rep nominee for Congressman on board -- Only one coach -- Got 2 hours sleep in my seat, Arrived at Clifton on regular time at 10:40 PM -- Found Mell Curtis and quite a committee, waiting to receive him -- Rode up on the 'bus, all of us -- Was about town awhile -- Bed at 1 1/2 -- tired out -- Woodburn puts up at the Hotel --

Monday Oct 20

Clear & Pleasant, but cool -- Slept till 8 AM -- was about town awhile -- PM up at the foundry to see about my stove castings -- not done yet -- Evening big 3 flat railroad torchlight procession moved, down town from Upper Austin -- at 7 1/2

with music, torches, transparencies etc, cannon firing in front of Hotel, also bonfire and cannon firing at that point -- Hall densely crowded -- lots of ladies -- Band, etc -- Woodburn gave a very excellent speech mostly in rreply to Cassidy's bold, recklessly untruthful assertions -- Afterward I joined in the raid on the saloons -- Farrell, Soule, & I went with Woodburn to his room 7 had a bottle of wine & a social talk -- Home at 12 1/2 -- Bed at 1 --

Tuesday Oct 21

The same -- AM at cabin awhile -- PM wrote letter to Dondero, also the usual one to wife & then commenced one to Enterprise, giving Jones' speech pretty full, from my notes -- Think will make 2 columns -- 19 pages -- took all night or till I could send it off at 4, by the 'bus -- Bed at 4 1/2 --

Wednesday Oct 22

The same -- Slept till 9 AM -- was about town some -- Evening & night I wrote up Woodburn's speech for the Enterprise -- Didn't mail it -- Through at 4 1/2 & to bed at 5 -- 20 pages of it -- Very heavy white frost the last two or three mornings --

Thursday Oct 23

The same -- warmer -- Rose at 9 -- About town & home some -- Evening Woodburn arrived from Belmont at 8 -- I wrote Enterprise 67 this night -- Mailed it at 4 -- Bed 5 -- Saw Woodburn off for Reno --

The same -- Slept from 5 1/2 to 9 AM -- PM went up to foundry, got stove doors, took them to cabin, fitted them & marked for the holes in hinges, or legs -- took them back to the machine shop & got the hinge holes drilled -- took down to cabin -- Eve-ning, down town awhile -- A secret meeting of the Cornishmen, held at City Hall, and organization effected, relative to voting, because they were accused of throwing off the ticket 2 years ago -- I didn't know it was exclusive and secret, and boldly went in -- About 150 present -- Was informed by the Chairman that it was exclusive -- So I left -- Bed at 11 -- very tired -- yesterday Gibson telegraphed to G W Wilcox -- the lawyer at Washington, asking what doing in his case -- Got

for reply: "Government will shortly notify you of amount due" --

The same -- Was up to cabin this PM -- Evening down town short time -- Bed at 11 --

Sunday Oct 26

The same -- cooler -- Was up to cabin and fired up stove & warmed up some meat & bread and cooked some eggs I took aong & ate breakfast there for 1st time -- Evening down town -- Col AC Ellis arrived about 11, also several Dem candidates who have been down in north end of country electioneering -- Bed at 12 -- cold night -- freezing
