At Home 1885 On the Comstock again Local City Editor of the Enterprise Room 7

Monday, March 23, 1885

Clear and pleasant -- Rose at 8:30 oclock A.M. having slept only 3 hours, because of having sat up all night writing letter No 82 for the Enterprise, descriptive of my trip to Austin and back -- Got a shave & breakfast and then went to Enterprise office and entered upon my duties, under my engagement as city editor, reporter etc -- Got along very smoothly -- Through at midnight -- Went up to Piper's new Opera House and saw the closing of the Knights of Pythias ball, given there to-night -- Was with Piper for 2 or 3 hours afterward, talking over matters & things & the past, etc -- Bed at 4 in my room, No 7, Douglas building, which I took yesterday -- Slept well -- Room $8 a month rent --

Tuesday March 24

The same -- Rose at 9:30 -- Worked as usual at my second days work, localizing -- Got along finely -- Through at a little after midnight -- Got letter from Chas Dondero today -- Took a box at Postoffice today, No 584, at $1 per quarter

The same -- Bed at 1 --

Friday March 27

The same -- Mining report day today -- Weekly -- I got mine up in good style, but had to rustle to do so, having been out of practice, & having many an old end to pick up -- Received telegram from my wife: "No harm done -- What about your desk? Freight due." I didn't care or need to answer -- Worked in office till 2 -- Bed at 2:30 --

Saturday March 28

The same -- Telegraphed wife that I would see her tomorrow evening -- Worked late tonight -- Bed 3 --

Sunday March 29

Cloudy, but pleasant -- Rose at 6 -- down town -- shave -- breakfast & at 8 left for Reno -- local passenger & freight train -- slow -- Reno at 12 N -- All right at home -- PM took walk with wife & our 2 boys down by RR depot -- Found my freight from Austin had arrived this morning -- $40.50 -- Evening at home -- Played banjo for 1st time for months, & Sam Alf and Bessie sang with me -- Bed at 8 1/2 -- At 4:30 PM today, the special train of Adelina Patti, the famous singer came dashing

Patti Reno -- Rain -- Fog My desk and trunk arrive

into Reno and stopped about 20 minutes at the depot -- 6 cars -- She had all her troupe, hotel and cooking arrangements along -- Whole town rushed to depot --

Worse than a Gold Hill dog fight for attraction -- Wife & I went, too, & both saw Patti, and after train left, everybody dispersed like going home from circus --

Monday March 30

The same -- After breakfast took morning train, at 7:10 -- Wife went with me to depot -- Va at 10 -- About town picking up items -- Worked very hard tonight -- Bed at 2:30 --

Wednesday* March 31

Cloudy -- AM, 1 or 2 light drizzles of rain -- Evening foggy -- morning, freight train brought my desk & trunk -- got them taken to my room and I fixed desk in running order before noon -- Work as usual -- Bed at 1:30 --

April Fool Day -- Fire Senator J P Jones arrives on the Comstock and leaves,

Wednesday April 1 1885

Cloudy -- April Fool Day -- Very little observed about town -- Fire early this morning on the Divide, back of the Ashland House, Burned two unoccupied wooden buildings -- Work as usual -- Bed at 3 --

Thursday April 2

The same -- About noon 2 or 3 light showers laid dust -- Senator J P Jones came in on special train from Reno, direct from Washington, last evening, arriving about 11 o'clock He was around among the mines some, today, at 5:25 he left on train for San F. -- Told me he was going for his wife, & would bring her
