Got letter from wifeRain Wife 1885 Walk to Gold Hill Wife comes to Va Friday May 1, 1885 Cloudy during most of day till toward evening- A few light showers about noon- Got letter from wife telling that she was coming up this evening- I worked lively at my mining report, and got it over half up before 7 when I went to train and met wife and took her to supper at (Fitmier and Armbrust's) - Then took her to Doe Kirby's and left her to pass evening with Lucy- Finished mining report, and read proof of it- Then took wife up to my room- and went back to office 11- Through at 2 and to bed with wifeSaturday May 2, 1885 Sky variable- Warmest day of season- Rose at 8- wife and I took breakfast and then a walk to Gold Hill- where she was to meet (Mrs. Dwight) Gov. Adam's mother, who was with the Gov. coming up on the cars from Carson- Got there just a little too late- Went down to Mrs. Robinson's- upstairs in Dr. Hall's building- waited In Gold Hill Again Piper's Drop Curtain Wife with me in Virginia and Gold Hill about time, and then found that Mrs. D. has gone down to Stevenson's in his buggy- Gov. gone up to Va- Buggy returned and took wife and Mrs. R down there also- Saw old Jane at Robinson's- Wife and the others staid at Stevenson's all day- I was about town 3 or 4 hours visiting the business places, saloons etc.- Rode up on

(Daget and Chataine's) liquor delivery wagon- Work as usual- Wife came up in office about 8- Piper came in and got us to go up to Opera House and see his new drop curtain, just put up- very fine- Soene in Venice- Took wife to room and went to office and worked until 1- Home- Bed 1:30- Just 3 years and 3 days since I left Golf Hill for AustinWife and I in Gold Hill and dine with Chubbuck Wife leaves for Reno again Sunday May 3 Clear and pleasant- Rose at 10- Took breakfast at Neffron's at 12 N- Home again- At 1PM walked to Gold Hill- Stopped in awhile aat Mrs. Robinson's- Also was at Mrs. Fraser's a short time, next door to the News property- And I, as well as Mary, took good look at what used to belong to us, the trees I planted, etc.- Somehat dilapidated but still in fine order- Then we walked down to Chubbuck's to where we were invited to dinner- Had roasted turkey, etc.- Also very pleasant social chat with Chubbuck and wife- At 5:30 were at Gold Hill depot, Mrs. Chub, and Pennie Robinson accompanying us, and wife left for Reno- I was at Charley (Tobener's) saloon for a while with others, and At 7pm took evening train for Va- Was about town awhile and with John Piper, at Opera House- went with him to Heffron;s and had Piper's New Opera House Dedication Room rent, $10.40pd- Exempt dues, $6 paid pan roast of oysters- Home at 12- Bed at 1- lonely Monday May 6 Clear and pleasant- about town as usual- PM office- Evening Dedication of

Piper's New Opera House- I was there and saw the whole performance- Very fine indeed- About 250 people there- Rather of a poor house considering the occaion-- After show, a dance till 12 oclock- I got back to the office at 10:30- worked hard- Through at 2- Bed 3- Paid my room rent this PM to Joe Douglass to 1st of May, $10.40- Also paid to Chas Rewson, Secy, my exempt dues to May 1st $6Rain RM Clarke Jr. Suicides Tuesday May 5 Variable- A smart shower about noon laid dust finely- R M Clarke Jr., son of well kown Carson attorney R M Clarke shot himself in the head with a Smith and Wesson 38 caliber revolver, at his room over WF & Cos Express office- died in 2 hours- cause gambling and dissipation and probably using money that did not belong to him- He was messenger and delivery clerk for WF & Co- Body sent to Carson tonight- Bullet went in about an inch above right ear and ranged upward and backward- laid down on bed in his clothes, fired himself out- Evening I attended coroners inquest and got all the testimony- Home at 2:30- Bed a 3- Attend and reported county comissioners todaySummerfield in Reno. $6 H&N Waterl "Pck's Bad Boy" at Opera HouseWednesday May 6 Clear and Pleasant- Got a letter from bardie Summerfield, Reno today, returning the $6 portal order I sent him at Austin- He has resigned as the teacher there, and

come to Reno, where he stops afor the present -- Evening, 1st appearance of "Peck's Bad Boy" company at the Opera House -- This si the 1st company Piper has had in his new theatre -- I was in and saw a little of it -- Very amusing -- that's all -- Unnatural, and not good -- Influence bad -- Bed at 2 1/2 -- The Combination pump broke Sunday night & once or twice since & the Hale & Norcross has been flooded in lower levels -- water rose to nearly the 2800 Pump all right again and water lowering fast --

Saturday May 9

Cloudy, with one or 2 light showers in the PM -- Evening the Col went to Carson & left Jim Townsend to fix up the telegraph for him, etc -- Through at 1 1/2 -- Bed at 3

Sunday May 10

The same -- Rose at 7 -- shaved -- took train at 8 -- lovely ride to Reno -- green trees, green grass and all that sort of thing -- Traveled on my pass for 1st time -- Reno at noon -- All right at home -- After dinner took walk with wife, Sam, Alf, & Bessie about town -- Bed at 9 1/2 --

Monday May 11

Cloudy, variable -- Evening 2 or 3 smart showers -- Hale & Norcross pump busted a week ago yesterday -- got it all right last 3 or 4 days -- Took train at 8 for oclock -- Bed at 3 -- This PM I wrote notice of a pretty little steam pressure indicator for attaching to boilers, to show what pressure of steam to the square inch is on the boiler, at any time -- George C Phillips of Silver City is the maker of it -- made it for his own use, as an improvement is two or three points over the previous styles -- He gave me $5 to make the item -- Worked late tonight -- Got off at 2 1/2 -- Was at Simon Fraser's saloon afterward awhile -- Bed at 4 --

Tuesday May 12

Cloudy & cooler -- blustering & very dusty -- Slept till nearly noon -- WW Hobart in town -- met him & we had good old chat together -- leaves for Carson tomorrow, & back to San Francisco, where he is Secy of Spring Valley Water Co - T R McGurn was attached for $300 this PM, and being afraid of other bouncings he sold everything to W J Hester. 3 grocery stores and a wood yard, personal property etc -- Evening McGurn sent for me & I went up to his rooms in the [Marge?] Building -- He told me the whole story, so I could write it up correctly -- Went to ball of Red men awhile, at Opera House -- Big party & very nice time -- Wrote it up & lots of other things -- Through at 2 -- Bed at 3 -- cold -- quite a sprinkle of snow at 7 PM --
