18 deg 1886 cold snow H M Yerington Gallatin & Folsom IJ Lewis & Co

Friday January 1, 1886

Cloudy and cold, with a slight sifting of snow toward evening, but not enough to whiten the ground. Rose at 11 AM. Took a bath of my feet, trimmed toe-nails etc -- PM was about town -- Evening at home -- slept on bed from 7 to 11 -- wrote letters to H M Yerington enclosing railroad pass for renewal -- to Gallatin & Folsom, Reno, about my new note I gave them last Wednesday for $345.93; to I J Lewis & Co Austin, enclosing 50 cents for split curtain rings & to take a drink with. Was up rest of night. Thermometer 18 above zero -- The coldest night yet --

Clear & cool -- Didnt undress & go to bed at all this morning -- Finished & mailed my letters -- Work as usual -- Bed at 3:30

Sunday Jan 3

Clear cool & pleasant -- Rose at noon -- PM about town -- Met Capt Harry Johns -- went with him to his room on A st -- & he gave me a $20 piece as a New Years present -- Also was with Fred Say formerly of Say's Station, on the Idaho road, at the Hot Springs, near New Truckee District, -- where Lynch of the Gold Hill News, and old Judge Robinson were interested -- I went up to his house with him, on A st -- met his wife, formerly Mrs Flick, wife of my old barber -- Hugh J Mohan

married her eldest daughter Louis -- Mary married Gavin. Evening at home -- slept on outside of bed from 9 till 12 -- rose -- wrote letter to M H de Young of SF Chronicle enclosing bill $20 for writing that descriptive sketch of Nevada, which appeared in the New Years edition of the Chronicle -- Also wrote letter to wife and one to A J Graham the famous phonographer 744 Broadway N.Y. for some of his phonographic works, enclosing 25 cents -- all in greenbacks -- 22 deg tonight --

Wife Pass Renewed

Monday Jan 4

Clear, pleasant & cold -- Rose at noon -- shaved etc -- was about town -- got letter from wife -- Also envelope from V & T RR co enclosing pass for self & wife for the ensuing year over the road -- Through in office at 2 -- Bed 3:30

Tuesday Jan 5

Same -- Slept till noon About town as usual -- Bed 4

Wednesday Jan 6

Same -- This PM I met W A (Pap) Abbott & he told me he was going to get married to Miss Emma Winterhauer tomorrow PM -- & I must give him a nice marriage notice & I went with him to Sutherland of the Enterprise Job office & he paid $18 for 200 wedding

Same -- Evening I was at train at 5:25 & saw Pap Abbott & his fair young bride take their departure for California, they having got married, at the rectory of St Paul's Episcopal church at 4:30 PM -- in time to this {transcribers typo; thus?} take their leave -- Old Winterhauer & wife, & other members of the family who came up to the marriage, accompanied

Red Men Banquet cold 18 deg Centennial New Watch for Wife

them as far as Gold Hill -- I wrote old Pap & his wedding up properly, for the paper in the morning -- At about 10 attended banquet of the Red Men at Dunlaps restaurant -- after joint installation of Pocahontas tribe of the city and Piute of Gold Hill -- Office till 2 -- Bed at 4 -- Very cold -- My thermometer outside of window said 18 above zero -- Got a watch for present to wife today from Fredrick the jewelar -- MM Fredrick -- Nickel silver -- $7.50 -- The name of it on the face is "Centennial" -- Mine that I have carried for the last few years and same kind is named "Pioneer" --

Same -- At 11 AM attended & presided at meeting of the Centennial stockholders -- agreed to declare a stock dividend of 40,000 shares of the stock in the treasury, pro rata among all hands -- leaving 16,500 shares or thereabouts in pool for the

Trustees to sell at not less than 25 cts for working or debt paying purposes -- A meeting of trustees was held immediately afterward and assessment of 2 cts per share levied -- Got letter from SF Chronicle enclosing PO order fo $10 in payment for my descriptive sketch of Nevada, saying that was enough for the work -- I got it cashed & pocketed -- Also got letter from I J Lewis Austin -- not got curtain rings -- They however did as I ordered & spent the 4 bits I sent them at John [Luitjens'?] saloon -- Bed at 3:30 -- cold

I & J Lewis Odd Fellows Banquet

Saturday Jan 9

Same -- Rose at noon -- PM about town -- Office awhile -- At 9 in the evening attended the banquet at conclusion of joint installation of officers of the five Odd Fellows Lodges and Pioneer Encampment No 1, of Storey county -- Grand Master B F Riley from Paradise arrived this morning and bossed the whole job -- I was present at the banquet by special inviation and responded to toast to "The Press" in a few words -- 105 seated at tables -- Through in office at 3 -- Bed at 5 --

Same -- voted at new election for President of Exempts -- Voted for Smith -- CC Bowman the other candidate -- Election resulted in JP Smith, 25, CC Bowman 11 -- 26 votes being cast -- Smith triumphantly elected -- After election came regular monthly meeting of Association -- The newly elected officers were installed -- I was made to act as

Cloudy & moderate -- Bed this morning at 8 -- slept till noon -- Evening at Opera House awhile -- Leavitts Eurpoean Special Company all in specialties -- Very good -- Went then to joint 3 lodges installation of the Knights of Pythias at old Pioneer Hall, which now belongs to them -- Got full report of the whole thing, banquet & all -- Home at 3 -- Bed at 4 -- Snowing lightly all evening -- About 2 inches at midnight & still snowing -- No letter from wife today I sent a $20 greenback --

Clear & very pleasant -- Snow melted off & left streets muddy -- Met Getchell on street -- just returned from visiting his [blank/erased?] folks East -- Been gone 3 months -- I

went to lumber yard and got a couple more boards -- 1 x 14 and 16 ft long -- Also got from the [blank/erased?] a big block 2 1/2 ft long for chopping, wood block to set up at end of wood box in my room -- It is 2 1/2 ft long x 8x12 square -- office as usual --
