Wednesday September 1

Clear & pleasant -- 72 deg -- Put up 2 half gallon Woodbury patent fruit jars, costing 2 bits each, full of [catauba] grapes in one and Muscat grapes in other -- Whole cost $1.10 -- Evening grand reception of the Carson lodge of AOUW by the lodges of this city and Gold Hill -- Procession with music through streets from RR depot -- they coming through in a special car, Seleet Knights 30 led off in full uniform -- Held exercises at Odd Fellows Hall -- Library, musical etc -- Bed at 3 -- Senator J P Jones arrived from Reno on special car at 11 tonight at Gold Hill -- Direct from Washington

Thursday Sept 2

same -- John W Mckay arrives this morning from San F -- Stewart Woodburn, Gov Adams & other big magnets, mining & political also came -- Big crowds of wire pullers, etc, all talking politics -- Bed at 3:30 -- I registered my name today as a voter in Storey county, once more, at Justice Kehoe's office -- I was No 1029 on the list --

Treadway's Park, Carson 12 carloads, full, pulled out from Gold Hill -- 9 from here & 3 from there -- Plenty went in carriages, etc -- Big time -- Bed 4 -- Letter from wife says will come up tomorrow -- Sent letter with pass -- Frosty night --

Frosty 1st -- Wife -- Breakfast -- Sore Eyes -Catarrh Symptoms --

Sunday Sept 5

Same -- cooler -- Thin ice formed in water troughs, tubs etc in lower part of the city last night & was seen this morning -- 1st of season -- Rose at 9 -- shaved -- wife arrived on morning train & came to room at 10:7 -- cool, sharp morning -- We had a splendid breakfast at room -- Nice steak cooked with green peppers & onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, grapes, fresh rolls, cakes, nice coffee, etc -- Really luxurious & best breakfast I ever ate in this city -- We staid at home all day, enjoying each others company -- She left on the 5:25 PM train for Reno -- I saw her off -- About town awhile -- Room read awhile -- got sleepy -- laid on bed & slept 3 hours till 12 -- rose -- worked "picking up" my desk till 4:30 -- Bed -- Have had sore eyes & catarrh symptoms all the week --- Most too soon --

Fall Weather -- $10 loaned to Adkinson -New Pioneer Flag -- Crapbapples & grapes --

Monday Sept 6

Clear & pleasant -- cool -- Cohen took $10 out of my pay today to pay for amount ad of Judge Adkison, which he got me to go security for as he is candidate for Justice of the Peace -- Got receipt from Cohen showing that It was paid by me, and gave it

to Judge Adkison, meeting him on the street -- I found Bob Patterson, & he & I went to J C Hampton & got him to send for a new flag for the Pioneers, the old one being worn completely out -- 20 ft flag -- stars & stripes -- will cost $30 -- Work as usual -- Bed 3:30 -- Cold night --

Same -- Put up patent jar of crabapples & muscat grapes mixed -- Bed 2 -- Eyes very sore -- Col Shaw returned to Va yesterday --

Dem State Convention at Elko -- spectacles -Admission Day -- Wizard Oil Concert --

Thursday Sept 9

Same -- "Admission Day" -- Anniversary of admission California into the Union -- Flag up on Pioneer Hall -- No other observance here except no stock board, the Gov of California having declared it legal holiday -- State Democratic Convention at Elko today -- Only got as far as preliminary organization adjourned till tomorrow -- Bed 3 -- Second concert of the Wizard Oil Company at Opera House this evening -- $200 house -- they had $165 house at other performance two weeks ago on Aug 24 -- Yet they have been giving free open air concerts for the last three or four weeks on the street, selling "Wizard Oil" from their wagon -- Really wonderful crowd -- Had to wear glasses this morning 1st time in my life on the street -- Clouded glasses merely as eye protectors, etc --

Friday Sept 10

Clear & pleasant -- warmer -- Work as usual for mining day -- The convention at Elko got through today -- Jewett W Adams nominated for Governor by acclamation -- Salute fired in his honor this evening, in lower part of city, near corner of Sutton Avenue and E st -- Bed at 3 --

Saturday Sept 11

Same -- Republican primaries for delagates to State convention which meets in Carson on the 24th -- I voted -- only one ticket in this field -- all unpledged -- Bed at 2:30 -- Telegram from wife saying she is coming up in the morning --

Sunday Sept 12

Clear & warm --Wife didnt come -- Had a crab chowder for dinner & had to eat it all myself -- Was about town little -- eyes very sore -- Bed 12 --

Catarrh bad -- clouded Eye glasses -- "Rex Magnus" -Preserving a Failure --

Monday Sept 13

Clear & pleasant -- temperate -- Work as usual -- Bed at 3 --

Tuesday Sept 14

Same -- Have plugged nose -- catarrh today -- Eyes very sore & have to wear clouded glasses (50 cts) because they look so bad during the day & especially in morning -- Bed 3:30

Wednesday Sept 15

Same -- My breath smells & tastes bad today -- Eyes a little better so I didnt wear my eye protecting glasses today -- Morning I found that my three Woodbury jars filled with catawba, muscat grapes, and crab apples & muscat grapes were working -- Think would have bursted soon -- Had to dump them down privy -- Bottled off 33 bottles green syrup I made yesterday -- 4 lbs white sugar to little over 1 quart of

Green syrup -- J C Morrill comes --

water -- Regular proportion is 3 3/4 lbs to 1 quart -- makes 2 quarts green syrup -- Mix in water, & put on stove, warm or otherwise -- Watch carefully, & minute it come to boil take it off -- Let it rest a few minutes -- skin if necessary, and strain through flannel -- I made three bottles of it -- About 11, just as I had got things straightened up in my room, somebody knocked at door -- Opened it and there was my old friend and fellow old time ranch neighbor in the Berryessa district Santa Clara County, California, away back in 1860 or thereabouts, J C Morrill -- Looked just as natural as life -- Hadn't seen him for 23 years, but knew him at a glance, & we

affiliated at once -- Had long chat -- Went down together -- Went to International Hotel together & found his new wife in parlor & had chat -- Morrill has sold out his old ranch for $225 per acre -- $26,000 in all -- Is taking a cruise, looking around, with a view to a home in his old days -- Left on evening train for Carson -- will go over to Lake Tahoe tomorrow for couple of days & back to San Jose -- Evening
