Tuesday Nov 30

Same -- Home on morning train -- Cohen got George Warren, local of the Chronicle to localize in my place last night -- George owes me $17.50 for last 5 years, so he let the $5 for his services go on that old account -- Worked as usual today -- The great Stock excitement ran highest yet today -- Con Cal & Va touching $40 & all others up in proportion -- Streets full of excited folks & sidewalks crowded -- Bed 2 -- First time I failed altogether to connect with Enterprise personally -- Bed at 3:30 -- Big Stock Boom Frankel Busted!!! 1886

Wednesday December 1. 1886

Clear & very pleasant -- is usual -- the big stock boom -- continues -- unabated and stronger than ever -- Work as usual -- Bed at 2:30 --

Thursday Dec 2

Same -- Stocks got a little set back today for 1st time by reason of the failure of L B Frankel -- stock brokers of this city, & other broker firms in San Francisco -- Frankel failed for about a million -- Has been short of stocks, not purchasing & filling orders during the present boom -- couldn't either buy or sell so had to bust -- great excitement -- The Frankels filed petition in insolvenay with list of creditors & skipped out for San Francisco -- Bed at 2 --

26 Same -- Mining day -- Work as usual -- Nothing new in the Frankel case -- Received letter from John Howell, Manager of the Reno Reduction works, enclosing statement of my crushing ore -- 207 lbs -- Gross yield $101.86 -- Reduction charges, $5 -- Check enclosed for balance due me $96.88 -- Pretty good days work for me -- Got the check cashed at California Bank -- Through in office at 1 1/2 -- Bed 2 1/2 --- The Dalys in "Vacation" or "Harvard vs Yale" appeared at Opera House tonight -- slim house --

Saturday Dec 4

Same -- continued excitement in regard to stocks, the Frankel failure, etc, and in the PM, the alleged failure of McGurn, which was probably not true, but it created

McGurn Troubled in Stox* John Howell of Reduction Works Centennial Assessment Paid Reno

big excitement for an hour or so, all the same --AM I wrote letter to Hohn Howell, Manager of the Reno Reduction Works, enclosing duplicate receipts on statement of my ore transaction -- Paid my assessment on Centennial today, due on the 6th, Monday $40.30 -- Busy as usual in the office till 1 1/2 oclock -- Bed at 3 -- Paid my assessment on Centennial delinquent, of 2 cts per share. $40.30 --

Sunday Dec 5

Variable -- Went to Reno on morning train -- All hands pretty well --Wife still ailing a little, headache, etc, but improving and able to run her school -- I did a little carpenting -- shelving, etc -- Evening at home -- banjo etc -- Bed at 10 --

27 Monday Dec 6

Cloudy, and moderate -- Up at 6 -- Train on time -- Light breakfast -- Through to Va on time at 10 AM -- Work as usual -- bed at 3 -- No stock board today in S.(?). as they are trying to straighten out the brokers -- several other failures reported since Saturday among the brokers there -- The Frankels are still missing from here -- all three doubtless in San F -- Street quotations from S.F. carry stocks much higher and still advancing --

Same -- Work as usual -- Bed 3 --

Rain & snow New pants ordered Hair cut Wife

Wednesday Dec 8

Stormy -- Am blustering, dusty, etc -- PM, toward evening rain set in for 4 or 5 hours -- turned to snow about 10 -- midnight still snowing & an inch deep -- Ordered new pair of pants of Hirsch & Co tailors, C at -- $12 -- Got hair cut -- Through at 1:30 -- Bed at 2:30 -- still snowing --

Thuesday Dec 9

Cloudy & disagreeably chilly with a few light snow squalls -- Got letter from wife enclosing letter from Jane Noble who wants the $45 we owe her -- She is liable to get it tomorrow -- Work as usual -- Bed at 2:30 -- Clear & freezing hard -- About 2 inches of snow on the ground this morning --

Friday Dec 10

Clear & pleasant but rather chilly -- Walked to Gold Hill at 11 AM -- Was about town awhile -- Took lunch at Charley (Haub's) by invitation from him at his restaurant in Dr Hall's building -- Then called on Jane Noble across the was in Fraser's building "The Comstock" -- Paid her the $45 balance due her from the Doten family, and she was glad to get it, as she is cramped in stocks -- So we don't owe her any more money -- Rode back to Va on 'bus as far as Choller office -- got off and got mining report -- Then to Savage office & got more reports calling on Mrs Garrity (eu?) route -- Lively days work -- 2 columns of report on mines -- Bed 3 -- cloudy & cold --

Sol Frankel busted arrested reno

Saturday Dec 11

Cloudy & threatening -- Work as usual -- At 7 this evening, Sol Frankel was arrested at his rooms, where he had been concealed, right across the way from mine, since his bust up -- He was badly dilapidated, mentally & physically and amost starved -- Took him to jail -- Bed at 3 --

Sunday Dec 12

Clear & pleasant -- Rose at 6 -- shaved, got ready, & at 8 AM left for Reno -- Found all right there -- Pm rested a little -- put up couple more shelves in store room -- Had good dinner on fresh herring I brought down -- dessert of canned plums my wife got in bill of goods sent for to Big Tree Store, Sacramento, during the last week -- Got $30 worth in all, of sugar, tea, beans, canned goods, ham -- etc -- Evening

Groceries from Sacramento I a bad night in Reno Terrible dream

banjo, etc -- bed at 10 -- did not sleep well 1st part of night, as my dinner was uneasy in me -- Had a terrible dream about being in a theater, front seat near orchestra Stage full of pictures and statuary -- One large black & shiny cast iron statue of Venus, naked, suddenly strode forward from the rear, and toppled over upon me, having evidently selected me from the rest of the audience -- I held up both hands to fend her off but the great weight was crushing me down -- I grunted and tried hard to yell for help, Just then my wife woke me, in time to save me from total destruction -- About 2 oclock woke again out of a trouble slumber and found my [next several lines erased] Awful cold night -- Got nearly

frozen & took me long time in bed to get warm again -- Slept well rest of night with no further trouble --

Monday Dec 13

Clear & pleasant -- Took morning train for Va -- Sharp cold white frost in Reno & Carson -- Warmer & more Springlike in Va -- Arrived on time -- Work as usual -- Bed at 3 -- Was introduced to Col Pat Quinn of the old Quinn mine, below Silver City this PM, by Col E D Boyle, Supt of the Alta mine -- Had a short talk & Quinn made me a present of 50 shares of Quinn stock quoted on the Board at $ 1 1/2 today -- Am expected
