evening train -- Blew furiously all day from long before daylight -- heaviest gale for last 16 years -- Did considerable damage at Va, smashing windown etc & prostratin small houses -- Blew in a window or two in State Capitol -- Bed at 3 -- The wind today was from the SW & a genuine "Washoe Zephyr"

Wednesday Feb 2

Clear and less blustering but a big strong wind all the same -- Morning train to carson -- Went to Dr Southworth and he filled or capped three more defective teeth -- Work as usual -- Returned to Va on evening train -- Got my copy in -- around

3 more teeth filled Wife The "Evening Report" First Issue

town some -- Bed at 2 -- Sent a letter to wife from Mound House, which I wrote as I came up, giving it to the down express & passenger train which passes at that point -- The new paper, daily, the Evening Report made its first issue this evening -- By Alf [Chartz] and D L Brown -- I visited their office this evening 24 page column paper -- democratic --

Heavy Storm Indications Jerry Schooling Dead

AM pleasant -- PM more gale, with heavy clouds along the Sierra and a few spits of snow -- Work as usual -- Back to Va on evening train -- Jerry Schooling prominent old resident of the State, formerly State Treasurer for 8 yrs, died in Carson at 4 PM from apoplexy -- I wrote him up tonight in the local besides my regular Carson re-

Friday Feb 4

Morning snowing furiously -- windy & threatening, with heavy snowstorm in the Sierra, but little in the valley -- Took morning train for Carson -- Reported Legis-lature as usual -- Both Houses adjourned over at noon till Monday, each adopting resolutions of respect relative to the death of Hon Jerry Schooling, formerly State Treasurer, and also member of the Legislature from Washoe County who died in this city yesterday morning of apoplexy -- He was a native of Missouri, aged 54 years old, and leaves a wife & 2 or 3 children. Body sent to Reno tonight for funeral tomorrow -- PM I worked lively & got my Enterprise report & correspondence completed & in the

hands of the conductor of the evening train for Va -- After supper took evening ex-press train for Reno at 6:55 -- Went through on time -- All right at home -- Bed 10 -- No snow fell in Carson, & but little in Reno today -- Only 2 or 3 inches in Va --

Saturday feb 5

Cloudy & threatening -- Wife & I took morning train for Va -- breakfast at French Rotisserie (Allen & Chaumonds) -- Went to room -- PM Dr Manson called on us short time -- I was about town attending to various matters -- also at Pioneer Hall awhile --

Tom Hanbridge Dead

street -- Evening at home -- wrote an item relative to old Tom Hanbridge who died this morning in this city -- 59 yrs old -- heart disease -- Old member of the old Fire Dept -- Old timer in this city -- Went to Enterprise office short time -- Bed 12 -- still cloudy & threatening but not freezing --

Sunday Feb 6

Morning lively snowstorm -- 6 inch -- Wife & I went to reno -- all right there -- & no snow there or in Carson -- Same Va snow across Washoe Valley -- Excursion train from Carson took down over 50 to the Jerry Schooling funeral -- which was a big one

notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather -- I was at home having a good time with my family -- Bed at 9 -- not storming --

Monday Feb 7

Cloudy & threatening -- cold and raw -- Morning train for Carson -- Went to Dr Southworth & had 2 more teeth filled on the left side of mouth -- Reported Legislature as usual -- Evening train to Va -- Finished my report at room -- Also wrote item obituary of "Salem" Andresw an old 49'er, Comstocker etc -- old sport, here -- His

real name was William Andrews -- 53 yrs old -- from Salem, Mass, came 'round the Horn in '49 -- member of the Exempts -- & will be buried from their Hall at 2 PM tomorrow -- He was one of those who came on the "Lisa Ship", "Bound for Sacramento -- with my wash bowl on my knee" -- He came over here in 1861 -- Bed at 3 --

Tuesday Feb 8

Took morning train for Carson -- Snowing good -- 2 inches on ground -- Called on Dr Southworth at Carson -- He polished off my last fillings -- Paid him his bill of only $14 for his dental work on me -- cheaper then I thought -- Reported as usual --

Va High School at Reno Snow Old "Pike" hurt

Class A, Va High School -- came down on morning train on visit to Carson -- 15 young ladies & 1 young man -- Prof J E [ ] with them -- they took a look at the Public Schools, Orphans Home, State Prison, Capitol, State Printing House, etc & went home on evening train -- I went also -- Lots of singing -- Snowed all the PM in Carson & Va -- About 4 inches of snow in either place -- Bed at 2 -- George ("Pike") Allen, my next room neighbor got badly hurt night before last in the Con Va mine -- Was unloading 12 x 12 [ ] from a cage at 1500 station -- Had one in his arms

when another fell over on him & down he went on the floor -- Head badly bruised, but worst injury to thigh & groin, where timber got across him -- He is in his room well cared for -- Bed at 2 -- Snow 7 inches -- George W Allen is his full name -1887

Variable, thawy, & Springlike -- At Carson by morning train -- Reported as usual -- Va on evening train -- Evening about Enterprise office & room writing up Read proofs -- Bed at 2 -- About 9 inches of snow on ground this morning, also at Carson -- Good sleighing, especially at Va tonight --

Variable -- thawy -- Took morning train for Carson -- Reported Legislature as usual -- came up on evening train -- read proof, etc, -- Bed 1 -- Threatening more storm -- Carson's snow about all gone --

Friday Feb 11

Somewhat cloudy, but Springlike and bland -- Morning train to Carson -- Reported Legislature as usual -- Got my report all written up before I left for Va -- so had easy time this evening -- only had to read proof -- bed at 12:30 -- On train coming up, met Frank Brown, found "little Brownie" of Gold Hill -- He is just up from San F, where he has been in the truck driving business for last year & a half -- come

Snow in San Francisco Big Snow Patti gone East

up on a visit to his folks in Gold Hill -- told me about the big snow in SF last Saturday -- 3 inches on a level -- Great time snowballing -- made quite a big excitement pelting every body in sight -- Street car windows smashed in and D -------- 1 to pay generally -- Snow is hardly ever seen in SF so this big storm was well
