Clear & pleasant, but cool in the shade -- May day -- street looked lively with everybody in their best clothing, going to or from church, etc -- PM about town as usual -- Evening at home -- slept 2 1/2 hours till 12 in my clothes -- Rose, made good fire, etc, & wrote all night an article for my pamphlet entitled "Monumental" --

Monday May 2

Cloudy but pleasant -- laid down on outside of bed in my clothes at 9 AM & slept till noon -- washed, shaved etc & was about town some in the PM -- Evening ditto -- Bed at 11 --

Pamphlet matter completed Joseph B Weston Dead

Tuesday May 3

Same -- Rose at 4 AM & went to writing for my pamphlet -- Wrote 2 fine articles "Executive and Legislative," and "An INteresting Pioneer Group" -- Through at 11 AM -- PM about town & evening ditto -- Bed at 12 -- very tired -- Have the matter for the pamphlet now completed and now willl revise, correct and rewrite and arrange for the printer -- Got letter from wife telling me the death of Joe Weston at Los Angeles Cal, a week ago Sunday -- of consumption -- 32 yrs old -- His father, Joseph Lewis Weston went to school together in old Plymoth, at the old schoolhouse down the lane, Tim Perry, teacher and Emily [Prown], subsequently little Joe's mother was the last girl I kissed when I left Plymouth -- She gave me a kiss in the Roland Reed Comedy Co in "Humbug"

Wednesday May 4

Same -- Rose at 11 AM -- PM about town -- Evening at Opera House -- The Roland Reed Dramatic Co -- in play of "Humbug" -- Not much of a play & ditto house -- Looked in at the keno game at the International -- Old Bob Patterson suggested that we try a

card -- did so and immediately I won a pool of $5 -- Tried 2 more cards without success and quit -- Bed 2 -- This mornings Enterprise had the following:

The Enterprise changed its style this morning back to what it was before Taggart put everything on the 1st page -- Also adopted the ready set matter for the 1st page -- [illegible] columns -- Very good improvement -- Bed 2 --

Thursday May 5

Rather cloudy & very blustery & dusty day -- PM about town -- Evening home at 11 -- slept 2 1/2 hours & then worked at copying for my pamphlet rest of night -- Matt Gillespie sent me from Los Angeles, Cal, a copy of the Los Angeles Evening Express from which I clip the following:

State Printer Off for Reno Keys

Friday May 6

Same -- Rose at 11, shaved etc -- Down town -- rec'd letter from Joe Harlow, State Printer that couldn't get at the pamphlet under 2 or 3 wks -- concluded to go to Reno -- Got ready & went on time -- Found all right at home and all happy to see me again after so long an absence -- Bed at 10 [next few lines erased]

Saurday May 7

Same -- Rose at 8 -- Train from California an hour late, so I sent a letter to Frannk M Huffaker, Va, to send me my bunch of keys which I left in my desk lock & which I much need here to unlock my tool chest etc -- After breakfast I took my little ones out to walk up on the Powning Addition, west part of town -- got home as soon as I could on account of my weakness of bowels, which troubled me badly all day & evening -- Was at home all day -- Evening banjo and songs -- Chrissie Andrews took dinner with us and spent evening -- helped us sing -- At 8 I was at depot & saw train arrive & go -- took a lot of brandy & ginger, & also a little flask of it home -- Bed at 11 -- [phrase erased]

At Reno Keys received Electric Lights Bank

Sunday May 8

Clear & very pleasant -- About home, resting -- Down town a time or two -- At 8 in the evening down to depot -- saw trains arrive -- got my bunch of keys -- Ed Costello the brakeman had them, but did not see me last evening -- Got telegram from Huffaker

this AM that Billy the Janitor had given them to the conductor -- awkward misunderstanding all round -- cost me 4 bits -- The electric lights showed brilliantly tonight -- three of them on tall masts, 60 or 70 ft high -- Bed at 10 -- My bowels all right today -- Brandy and ginger did it -- This PM visited the first National Bank with Taylor the Assistant cashier -- just removed to new & better location on Virginia st -- near the bridge -- nearly fixed up --

Goodie's crib Great Expectations stormy In Reno Freezing

Monday May 9

Cloudy -- PM cold, blustery & threatening -- Was at home most of the day building a crib bed for Goodie to sleep in -- Pretty good job -- completed it at 6 PM -- Morning Evening at home -- Wife finished reading Dickens "Great Expectations" to us -- Children all take great delight in her reading -- Bed at 10 -- Blowing furiously from the West and snowing very lightly -- Looks like a big storm -- setting in --

Tuesday May 10

AM clear & warm -- PM chilly with some clouds -- Worked hard at carpentering & other home jobs -- Evening down at depot short time -- Bed 10 -- Frosty night -- Ice formed --

Insane Asylum Investigation Reported for Reno Journal

Wednesday May 11

Cloudy & cooler -- AM staid at home, stiff & lame from my last 2 days work, and some cold -- PM about town, at Gazette office, etc -- Bed 10 -

Thursday May 12

Clear warm & pleasant -- AM about town -- with Lieut Gov Davis at his new lumber yeard site above town -- also met one of the Hoffmann brothers from Austin -- not Ike nor Abe, but the younger brother -- He is in for a few days, looking around -- PM, rode out to the Insane Asylum with Charley Legate -- Great investigation going forward, today commenced, of grave charges against Dr Bishop, the Supt, of, malreatment of patients, [sentence erased] in office, etc -- Conducted before State Board of Insane Commissions consisting of Gov Stevenson, State Controller Hallock, & State Treasurer Tufly --

Asylum Investigation

Strong legal talent on both sides -- Investigation only organized today, & testimony to be proceeded with tomorrow -- I reported it for the Reno Journal -- and also sent short telegram of it to the SF Chronicle -- Evening down at Depot Hotel -- Bed at 10:30 --

Friday May 13

The same -- Rode down to the Insane Asylum at 9 AM -- Investigation resumed at 10 -- Witnesses examined and cross examined all day -- Took lunch at noon with Dr Bishop's family, the Commissioners, Alf Chatrz the official short hand reporter, & 1 or 2 others -- At 5:30 examination postponed till 9 AM tomorrow -- Rode back to Reno on
