Wednesday Nov 2

Same -- Dave James, who has been working at the Lima shaft -- and boss of the thing, has kept me posted the last week and tonight -- 95 ft down, they found a drift north 60 feet with short crosscuts east & west showing low grade quartz -- Found bottom of shaft 212 ft from the surface -- 6 ft less than I had it -- found no south drift, and only 15 ft east drift instead of 20 as I had it -- Samples were taken from the face of the drift, and operations suspended this evening -- So now comes

Catholic Fair DO Adkison dead

the solution of my 8 years Choller [cathop] -- Gaming being knocked out, the Catholic Fair which commenced tonight had all its own way -- Well patronized -- I was about town during the evening -- Bed at 12 --

Thursday Nov 3

Same -- Judge D O Adkison died at San Francisco this morning -- One of the oldest & best known residents of this city -- I wrote his obituary in the Report this PM, and in evening for Enterprise -- Read proof etc for Enterprise & bed at 3 --

Lima Shaft Failure

Friday Nov 4

Cloudy but pleasant -- PM rode to Gold Hill with John Briggs, in his buggy -- went to Crown Point works & had interview with Supt Sam Jones -- Says my Chollar Lima shaft proposition is a dead failure, no ore at all being found in that east crosscut at the bottom of the shaft -- Has the men there yet to try it a little

farther, but it is not even in quartz -- So after 8 years persistent effort to that end I find myself completely humbugged -- and Lawson too -- Went down to Jack Long's saloon in Lower Gold Hill at lower end of the 'bus route -- Jack an old friend -- he treated me very hospitably & presented me with a 1/2 gallon jar of pickled

onions, a bottle of tomato catsup and 9 fresh duck eggs, all of which I took home with me on the 'bus -- Evening at home and at Enterprise office -- Bed at 3 --

Saturday Nov 5

Clear & pleasant -- AM at home [phrase erased] PM about town -- Evening at home -- Bed 1 --

Sunday Nov 6

Same -- Train arrived 2 hours late, at noon, with remains of D O Adkison also wife and daughter -- Delegations of Odd Fellows took corpse from the depot, to Odd Fellows Hall -- where it was placed in state, -- amid the finest floral decoration

Adkison's funeral

I ever saw -- At 2 PM the funeral took place -- Odd Fellows from Reno, Carson, Dayton etc -- He being a prominent member of the Exempts, we were given the lead under the marshalship of JC Harlow -- county commissioner Bart Burke & myself marched ahead, & led off -- Long processon on foot besides many carriages -- Went to IOOF cemetery -- On return we were left at our hall, roll called, etc -- I was made Committee on Resolutions, with Charles Rawson and Pete Smith, on death of Bro

Adkison --Evening at home -- Bed at 1 -- Mirror of Ireland George Warren pays $5

Monday Nov 7 Variable but pleasant & cool -- About town most of day -- Evening attended Dan Morris Sullivan's "Mirror of Ireland" show at Pipers Opera House -- Panorama, and incidental Irish songs, dances, acting, etc -- Pretty fair show -- Good house -- Better than will be tomorrow night or thereafter -- Put in a couple of items into Enterprise -- Bed 1 --

Tuesday Nov 8 Clear cool & pleasant -- About town as usual -- (phrase erased) looseness on two occasions -- morning & evening -- George Warren of the Chronicle paid me $5 more on his old account -- still owes $5 -- Bed at 1 --Jack Stephens Dead Chinese Funeral Hop Sing

Wednesday Nov 9 Same -- PM & evening (phrase erased) Had to stay home --

Thursday Nov 10 Same (phrase erased) Bed 2 -- Jack Stephens died in Gold Hill today of Pneumonia -- My old friend Jack with the heavy check and most powerful lungs -- Has kept saloon there for last 20 yrs -- The funeral of Hop Sing, an old resident of the Chinese quarter of this city -- merchant, man of property and great influence among the Chinese took place this PM at 2 o'clock -- about a dozen carriages loaded with

Chinese -- Hearse, pall bearers, etc -- Passed up Union street & south along C street

Chinese Band Upset

to burial ground, beyond the County Hospital -- Chinese band of 6 or 8, pieces --about a dozen in all in a 'bus, got upset by balky team of 2 horses on Union st, just below C street, coming up the steep grade -- Knocked them out of time, tune and funeral -- Nobody hurt --

Friday Nov 11

Same -- The four Anarchist murderers Spies, Parsons, [Engels?], and Fischer were hanged at Chicago today -- Fielden and Schwab were committed to imprisonment for life --

4 Anarchists Hanged at Chicago Literary Ball

Lingg, the other of the severn, the bomb maker and worst of the lot committed suicide yesterday by exploding a dynamite cap in his mouth with a lighted candle, blowing half his head off -- in jail -- Evening down town -- Dropped in at Grand social of the High School Literary Society at National Guard Hall short time -- Nice party, fairly attended -- Bed 1 --

Same -- as usual -- Evening down town -- sat up most of the night reading etc --

I reported resolutions on D O Adkison's death which I wrote at noon today -- Were unanimously adopted -- Jack Stephens' funeral took place from Pythian Hall this PM & he was buried in the cemetary, north of town -- Had big funeral -- Knights of Pythias, and Sons of St George jointly -- Evening down town -- Bed at 1 -- Jack Stephens was 50 yrs old -- Adkison resolutions published in Enterprise --

Bill Emerson Minstrals AD Bullard Knocked Out

Monday Nov 14

Clear cool & pleasant -- was about town as usual -- Evening at Opera House -- Bill Emerson's Minstrels from S.F. -- 20 of them -- Fine troupe & performance, & big house -- Got my Adkison resolutions in Enterprise, Bed at 2 -- AD Bullard formerly of the Vesey House Gold Hill but now resident of Virginia got badly hurt about 5:30 PM -- He was very drunk and got into a quarrel with Jack Wolfe, a teamster. They were having a small bit of a fight in Young Bros saloon, when Bullard was thrown or fell down backward striking on the iron threshold of the door -- He was made insensible and paralyzed all over -- He is liable to make a die of it.

Same -- Bullard still senseless & no change in his condition since the first Evening at 2nd & last performance of the Billy Emerson Minstrel show -- Fair house & very interesting performance -- Bed at 2 -- Read my "3 days at Donner Lake" -- When Dan & I went "way over in Excelsior" -- over 20 years ago --
