Monday Jan 16

Cloudy & 20 above -- 40 [degree] change in last day or two -- Joe Eckley's application returned yesterday, from San Francisco for explanation relative to [rheumatism?] Dr Mason wrote explanation on it, & I will send it back to SF tomorrow -- Joe paid me the $45 today -- $27 of it is mine under the new contract giving me 60 per cent -- I went around & paid up some of my small bills & attended business generally -- Evening about town some -- Home at 12 -- Bed 3 -- Telegram from wife at 6 PM "Come home & stay till bad weather is over " -- This clipping from this evening's Virginia Chronicle is correct -- (12 above zero when I went to bed this night) --

Clear & 15 above, on the average -- Wrote letters to Allen, Wife, and to H P Wakelee & Co -- Evening down town awhile -- Bed at 1 -- 15 above -- Sent back 6 catheters to Wakelee & co, for a size larger (5s instead of 4s)

Wednesday Jan 18

Same -- About 28 above on the average -- PM around on insurance with little success -- Evening ditto -- Bed 2 --

Cloudy, with a light snow or two -- I about, as usual -- Bed at 1 -- 37 [degrees] -- PM at Gold Hill awhile -- Thawy day -

Same -- Thawy a light sprinkle of rain as well as snow -- Joe Eckley's application returned to me from Allen with further inquiries to be made in regard to rheumatism,

etc -- I visited and conferred with Dr's Kirby and Bronson on the subject -- Evening about town -- Bed at 1 --

Same -- Snow melted off quite rapidly -- PM down to Gold Hill short time -- Evening down town -- Bed 2 --

Cloudy & thawy with little snow -- as usual -- Bed 2

Monday Jan 23

Same -- Several pretty heavy damp snow squalls -- Slushy -- Bad traveling -- Around on insurance as usual -- Bed at 1 --

Tuesday Jan 24

Very fine day though a little cloudy at times -- About as usual -- Bed 1 -- Met Hank or Henry H Jewett today, just in from Hawthorne where he resides -- He was formerly painter in Gold Hill & painted my house -- Is in on a short visit --

last appearance of Neil Burgess and company --They played "Vim" last evening to a good house, and "Widow Bedott" this evening to about half a house -- He plays the leading female character in each piece -- Very funny indeed -- Each evening concluded with most excellent aerobatic feats by Bowler and McVeigh -- Bed at 2 --

Cloudy but very springlike -- Snow going off fast -- C st slushy & very bad for travel -- Evening I attended meeting of Comstock Degree Lodge No 1, IOOF and received my first degree in the order -- I took the initiate degree Aug 25, 1866 (see Book No 32) Never have attended Lodge since -- hardly ever -- There was a large attendance, and at close of my initiation responded to call with best speech I ever made -- much applauded -- Bed 2

Cloudy buy warm and thawy -- Morning train came in on time at 10 -- Wife came -- met her & escorted to room -- We ate there, and took long walk up & down C st -- Evening staid at home -- Bed at 9 --

Cloudy & warm -- Rose at 9:30 -- We ate at home, & I staid at home all day -- saw her off returning to Reno at 3:45 PM -- Evening about town -- Bed 1 --

Same -- About town as usual -- C street with its melting snow, etc -- almost is impassable -- Evening down town -- also looked in at Leap Year ball given by the ladies high-toned, etc, at National Guard Hall -- Big crowd -- Bed at 2 --

AM clear & very pleasant & melting -- PM cloudy with slight drizzle of rain about sunset -- About town -- Evening met Lieut Gov Davis just arrived on local train from Carson. Had to run with him about town, & at 12 saw him home to bed at the Hotel International -- Bed myself at 1 --

AM cloudy, with a light snow storm or two -- PM cleared off pleasant -- Evening clear -- Bed at 12 -- 28 -- I saw Lieut Gov Davis off on the evening train for Reno --

Clear & pleasant -- cooler -- I put advertisements of my insurance Co into the Chronicle and the Report -- this evening published -- Evening at 8 I went to St Paul's church to the marriage of John Randolph Vail to Miss Susie Rising, second
