wrote an insurance local for mornings Enterprise -- wrote up Keyes Comm. --Bed 1 -- R M Daggett arrived from California last nights train -- Come to engage in the political campaign --

1888 -- Keyes' Statement -- Late Mail J C Hampton's Body Found

Saturday Sept 1 1888

Clear -- 80º -- Busy most of day with Keyes' statement -- adding to it, fixing up, etc, he visiting me 2 or 3 times -- Evening about town -- Bed 12 -- Hamptons body found this morning floating near Vallejo at wharf, San Francisco -- Will be brought over here Tuesday --

Sunday Sept 2

Same -- Mail later than for years owing to breakage of a car wheel &truck on CP east bound train this morning -- arrived at 5:15 & left at 5:45 -- I finished my Keyes job at noon & met him & we took it to D H Brown of the Evening Report to print -- Bed 11 --

Monday Sept 3

Same -- Hotter -- 86º -- Mail 5 hours late -- PM went to lower Gold Hill to see Joseph Movern -- Will have him re-examinedon the heart disease point -- Evening at

"A Dark Secret" -- Hampton arrives Keyes job suicide

Opera House --[Lew] Morrison and company in "A Dark Secret" -- big house -- pretty good play -- Had a big pond or tank of water in the stage, with boats, steam launch,

swans, etc -- Whole width of stage, & 7 ft to 2 1/2 ft deep -- Heroine thrown into it to drown, but is rescued by brave lover, who dives boldly in to rescue -- Bed at 1 --

Tuesday Sept 4

Clear, windy, a little cooler -- The body of Hampton arrived on train at noon & was taken to Masonic Hall by delegation of Knights Templar, to which he belonged -- I was busy most of day at the Report office attending to the printing of my Keyes job -- D W Bailey the printer who set it up worked at it yesterday PM & started in again at 6 AM today all but about a dozen lines when he went down to the Chronicle

Printer cuts throat

office, got a razor & and cut his throat -- Taken over to the County Hospital at noon -- Horrible gash 6 inches long, straight across, deep each side of windpipe, but razor too dull to sever the windpipe -- Will probably die, yet may recover -- Been drinking very heavily last week or two -- Brown finished up the job, I read proof, etc -- He printed about 40 copies -- Keyes took most of them to SF tonight -- Saw him off on train -- Bed 12 -- Play of last evening repeated -- Took a sheet 6 x 15 inches to print Keyes statement -- solid piece --

Hampton's Funeral -- "Faust" Miner's Picnic

Wednesday Sept 5

Clear & pleasant -- 82º -- PM at 2:30 I was at Exempt Hall & subsequently joined in Hampton's funeral with about 20 other fellow members, H being a prominent member of the Association -- Footed it out to the cemetery & house -- One of the biggest funerals

Clear, sultry -- 87º -- Went to the Miners Union Picnic at Treadway's Park, Carson -- 15 cars with commissary car full -- Was about town mostly -- Home at 7 -- not a very good time -- Bed 12 --

Hampton Resolutions -- Admission Day Maud Harkin Suicide

Clear & 82º -- AM I drafted a series of resolutions on the death of Hampton, & at 2 PM I introduced them at regular monthly meeting of the Exempts -- Was appointed chairman of a committee of 3 on the subject -- to report immediately -- We did so -- report adopted & Comm discharged -- Evening at home -- Bed 1 --

Monday Sept 10

Close -- sultry -- 86º -- Maud Harkin a young girl of 17 suicided with strychnine about noon at her parents residence -- cause not stated -- love & consequent trouble probably -- I put up the pioneer flag today in honor of Admission of California

Tuesday Sept 11

Same -- George Warren, local of the Chronicle called on me at 7 AM, before I was up & engaged me to take his place as he is sick, & going away to recruit -- I went down & stood in -- Took 2 PM 'bus to Gold Hill, borrowed $30 from John Hoss & paid my present assessment $5.45 on Centennial, this being sale day -- Evening cloudy, with some light showers -- The hay fever has caught onto me the last 3 or 4 days -- nose plugged, hoarse in throat, and eyes getting weak & watery & itchy -- Bed at 1 -- Helped localize on the Enterprise also this evening, read proof, etc -- Got in good item on John Hoss

The same -- evening a light shower or so -- localized good -- Bed at 12

Thursday Sept 13

Same, but no shower in evening, although promising -- I localized as usual -- Evening at Opera House -- Political Republican speaking commencement of campaign by Bartine for Congress, and Murphy for Supreme Judge -- Big crowd -- Bed at 1 --

Friday Sept 14

Same -- A few pretty fair showers toward evening laid dust good & dampened the air -

made my hay fever most well -- After paper to press I visited Geo Warren who lies sick at lodging house on B st, with diarrhea and whisky -- About town -- Bed 12:30 -- This noon Alex Goldenson was hung at 8am for murder of Marie Kelly a year

Saturday Sept 15

Same -- very copious shower in PM & more in evening -- rode to GH at 1 PM on bus, with Kinzie, both [ ] of the Centennial -- Waited an hour for Harry Gorham, another Trustee -- met & levied assessent of 3 cts -- Rain set in at 1 oclock, with big thunder etc -- Main st was a roaring old river from side to side -- Bed at 12

Local on Chronicle -- cooler -- State Fair Barney McGear shot -- Clough

Monday Sept 17

Clear & pleasant -- cooler -- 72º -- Localized as usual -- Warren still sick abed -- I visit him daily -- Bed 12 -- State Fair commenced at Reno today for a week --

Same -- 70º -- As usual -- Bed 11 --
