Same -- Busy at room most of day fixing up journal clippings from file etc -- PM & evening down town -- Bed 1 -- Thermometer in room 84 -

Wednesday July 31

PM a little cooler -- Below 80 -- AM about 88 -- Busy at room writing, etc -- PM & evening about town or at Enterprise -- Evening met brother to Jack Harris of Gold

Cooler Jack Harris Dead $2,000 lose

Hill, Hill, whom I insured a year ago for $2,000 -- Said he had died at 7 oclock this evening at his home in Gold Hill -- (Bills Gibson's old dwelling) of a bad cold and general letting down -- lungs used up etc -- Bed at 2 -- About 10 degrees cooler than this AM, outside but my thermometer in room still said 82 --

Clear & from 86 to 90 deg in shade along C st -- AM copied off my "educational Nevada" University article & put it in mail with letter to wife -- PM about town -- Evening ditto -- Bed at 11:30 -- room thermometer 82 -- Breezy --

Friday August 2

Same -- Hotter -- 90 to 95 -- About town -- Bed 11 -- cooler -- 77 in my room --

Saturday Aug 3

Clear -- About 90 -- About town as usual -- PM wrote & sent letter to Lew Stevenson, relative to bill Enterprise $30 for printing my electric article, $20 and 100

Prouty" New England Yankee Comedy Co -- 4 act play -- Richard Golden as "Jed" -- Very good company & play -- very funny & interesting -- Pretty good house -- Was at Enterprise reading proof etc -- Bed at 3 -- Like Golden's "Yankee" better than Denman Thompson's "Joshua Whitcomb" --

Sunday Aug 4

Same 87 -- A little cooler -- some breeze -- About as usual -- Evening at Opera House -- JB Polk and Comedy Co in "Mixed Pickles" -- Poor play, $30 house, and no extra good acting -- I could hardly keep awake -- Bed 12 --

Monday Aug 5

Clear -- 85 -- PM down to Gold Hill awhile -- rode down & back with JH Tilton in his buggy -- 1 horse -- Evening theater -- same Co in "The Silent Partner" -- Very good indeed -- [?] of a house -- RK Allen came up on evening local train -- Bed 1:30 --

Same -- AM met RK Allen on C st -- We had much life Insurance talk -- compared notes etc -- Bed 12 -- Allen left for SF on evening train -- I was down to depot & saw him

off -- Going about town -- Bed 12:30 -- Got short note from Yerington today, enclosing free pass from three months from the 6th instant -- Letter read: Carson City, Nev, Aug 6, 1889 -- Alf Doten Esq, Virginia, My Dear Sir -- Altho the grass is indeed very short with us I have concluded to renew your pass as you will note from enclosed. Hoping it will be a source of both pleasure and profit to you I remain Truly Yours HM Yerington -- "The pass read: "V & T RR Co Aug 6, 1889. Same -- Evening clouded up -- breezed up & cooled off considerably -- About town -- Bed 12 -- Wrote letter this evening to send to Yerington tomorrow acknowledging receipt of pass

Clear -- 85 -- About town -- Evening at Degree Lodge -- All three degrees conferred to accommodate 3 from Carson -- Many present from Dayton, Silver, Gold Hill, and special train from Carson -- Through at 11 -- Collation in front hall of sandwiches, salads, melons, etc, hot coffee, & other beverages & cigars -- Wrote it for Enterprise -- Bed at 1 --

Saturday Aug 10

AM a little cloudy -- PM clear & about 93 in Carson -- Went on Caledonian excursion train to Carson -- was on grounds all day till return at 6:20 -- Arrived about 8 -- Wrote up, read proof -- Bed at 2:30 -- very tired --

Sunday Aug 11

Clear & 86 -- Slept late -- wrote resolutions for Exempt Society on death of Wood Knight -- Regular meeting of Exempts at 2 PM -- I presided -- Resolutions adopted, etc -- Evening about town -- Bed 12 -- Have got a bad cold somehow in the last 2 or 3 days, in head & lungs -- very hoarse -- etc --

C & P -- cooler -- 84 -- About town -- Cold very little better -- Evening theater single night engagement of Robert Mantell & good dramatic Co in the 5 act romantic drama of "Monbars" -- Very good play & good house -- About 7 oclock fire alarm from little girl of Crockwell the photographer running out on B street covered with flames from coal oil explosion --

Same -- Morning train to Carson -- PM I attended meeting of State Board of Reclamation and Internal Improvement at State House -- Took notes for report in

Wednesday Aug12

Same -- PM got Dr P Manson's statement on the proof blank of John J Harris' loss -- Walked to Gold Hill and got that of the widow -- Both sworn to before Justices of the Peace -- Walked back at 8 PM -- Took my report of the meeting at Carson yesterday to Enterprise -- read proof etc -- Bed at 1 -- very tired -- Judge David S Terry shot & killed by David Nagle this morning at Lathrop on the Southern Pacific RR, south of Stockton -- The great sensation of the day --

Same -- Got in rest of proofs statement on death of John J Harris, making 5 in all -- Wife, Doctor, undertaker, acquaintence and my own, as agent -- me sworn to before Justice Osborne, and other 4 before Justice Kehoe -- Attested to by J P Flanningham, as Deputy County Clerk -- Got through in time to send it off to SF by evening train -- Evening Enterprise -- Bed 1:30 --
