Monday Dec 2

C & P -- PM at Gold Hill on insurance etc -- Evening Enterprise -- got in another "Along the Railroad" -- read proof etc -- Bed 2 --

Tuesday Dec 3

Variable -- pleasant -- Wrote more of Bennett's crankiness -- also "Sierra" and "Sierras" for Enterprise -- office reading proof etc -- Andy Patterson, Bob's brother died at his residence this morning from chronic rheumatic affliction -- They were twins, 63 years & 4 months old -- I wrote a nice obituary notice of him in Enterprise tonight -- Bed 2 -- cloudy, with light spray of snow or rain --

Alexander Bedlam -- Yerington Goes East

Wednesday Dec 4

Same -- Morning a light covering of snow whitened the ground -- Chilly day -- Though rather pleasant -- Rec'd a sharp sort of a letter from Alexander Bedlam, President of the Bankers & Merchants M L Ass'n -- PM wrote a long reply to it -- Evening copied it -- [9] big pages, closely written -- Took me till 4 oclock -- Bed --

Thursday Dec 5

Clear cold & pleasant -- As usual -- PM Bennett visited me & paid me $5 on my crank writings for him -- Evening about town -- PM fund of Andy Patterson -- Bed 3

Friday Dec 6

Stormy -- Morning train to Carson -- Yerington left for a 2 months visit to the East and Canada today so I didn't see him -- was about town & went back to Va on the

regular passenger at noon -- Evening I reported the first of the Winter series of Odd Fellows' literary & social entertainments at National Guard Hall -- Big crowd--

Snow -- Sleighing

Took me till 2:30 oclock to write it up -- Snowed some while I was in Carson, & also here -- also this evening- Bed 4 -- about an inch of snow on ground, & more coming lightly-

Saturday Dec 7

Variable -- chilly -- as usual -- Evening at Lodge -- Initiated 2 candidates -- I did the old Warden act 1st rate -- At office awhile -- Bed 1 -

Sunday Dec 8

Stormy -- Snow fell at intervals accumulating about 5 or 6 inches -- PM & evening lots of cutters & sleighing parties were out -- I was at room till 2 PM washing & straightening up, etc, Went then to regular monthly meeting of Exempts -- I pre-sided as usual -- Had annual election of officers for ensuring term as follows:

President -- E A Pottle 1st Vice Pres't -- Joseph Josephs 2nd " " -- J W Shields Sec'y -- George I Lammon Treasurer -- L Guggenheim Trustees -- Wm Davis C C Bowman Wm Pennison Jacob Young James Jewell

All were elected unanimously -- Took train at 1:20 for Reno -- No snow, only [drizzling] rain in Carson or Reno -- little snow in Washoe Valley -- Reno slimy with mud

Poured all night at Reno -- Millie & baby still at home -- Bed 10 -- Jeff Davis died in New Orleans Friday morning last -- 81 yrs of age --

Bessie 116, Millie 107 lbs -- Snow Lew Johnson's Minstrels

Monday Dec 9

Cloudy with occasional light snow squalls -- Morning train to Gold Hill -- Was there during PM -- Walked to Va at dark -- Evening about town -- Bed at 1 -- Bessie weighs 116 lbs and Millie 107 lbs, so they told me this morning --

Tuesday Dec 10

Very strong wind blew furiously most of day, from the SW with occasional snow squalls -- thawy & very sloppy -- PM at Gold Hill -- Evening at Opera House -- "Lew Johnson's Refined minstrels" -- all colored men -- 14 in all -- arrived this day -- They paraded street on arrival with their fine band -- evening had about 1/2 a house -- Pretty good entertainment, of the minstrel variety order -- But real negro minstrels are not as good as white imitators -- Don't come up to the Old SF Minstrels by a long chalk -- Bed 1 -- Snow 3 inches -- I was at the Crown Point office awhile this

Senator Jones Passes East -- Snow Reno letter from wife in paper -- J P Jones

PM and Harry Gorham told me that Senator J P Jones passed east last night over the Central Pacific railroad, for Washington --

Thawy -- light snow squalls most of the day -- About 3 inches of snow on the ground

Thursday Dec 12

Light snowstorm nearly all day -- 4 or 5 inches on the ground -- Sleighing not very good but utilized by cutters delivery sleighs etc -- Evening I sketched out a letter to send to J P Jones -- Was at office awhile, read proof -- Reno letter from Wife goes in morning paper -- Bed 3 -- snowing lightly --

Friday Dec 13

Same -- About 8 inches snow on ground -- Fine sleighing -- Passed as usual -- Bed at 1 -- clear & cold --

Saturday Dec 14

Cloudy with light snow in the evening -- I copied & send my letter to Senator J P Jones, Washington D.C. by evening mail -- About the Australian [Counsalate] for me -- Wrote up application of John Jacob Schaefer this PM for $3,000 & placed in hands of Dr Webber for examination -- 53 years old -- Evening about town -- Bed 1 -- By mail today I received a copy of "Report of the Director of the Mint, 1887" -- Think it came from Washington. -- It was directed to me personally --

Clear & pleasant -- Plenty of sleighs & people out -- AM at room -- PM down town -- Evening train to Reno -- Found Reno very muddy -- Millie and baby returned to San

Cloudy & more or less foggy -- Back to Va on AM train, arriving on time at 1:10 PM -- Went to Dr Webber's office -- Found Jake Schaefer there -- just examined -- passed good -- 53 years old -- full name: John Jacob Schaefer -- in favor of his wife Helena Schaefer -- Residence Gold Hill -- "Private Detective service Va & GH Water Co and Wood Co, general speculator etc" -- $3,000 -- Evening at room -- Bed 2

Cloudy but pleasant -- a snow squall of an inch in morning -- Sleighing poor -- Jake Schaefer cut his application down to $2,000 & paid me $25.50 -- Evening I wrote "Along the Railroad" for tomorrow's Enterprise -- read proof etc -- Bed 2 --
