Hot Weather -- Stox down -- The Russell Dramatic Co-"Octoroon" -- Preparing for the "Fourth"

Wednesday July 1, 1891

Clear, warm & pleasant -- Pretty warm for the Comstock -- 85 degrees in the shade -- Stocks continue depressed, Con Va being quoted at $6 7/8 or $6 3/4. Preparations everywhere for the celebration of the 4th -- I busied myself at room some hours washing & mending clothes, etc, Was about town some -- Evening at theater -- Fourth night of the Russell Dramatic Co -- Played the "Octoroon" to a very slim house -- Played it very excellently -- Bed at 1 -- Telegraph reports very hot weather in California & the East -- as high as 110[degrees] & 112[degrees] in Fresno, and Merced -- Yuma 116[degrees] -- San Francisco & vicinity 100[degrees] -- 103[degrees] to 110[degrees] in Napa and Sonoma yesterday -- My

Hot Weather -- The Carson Mint all Right

room thermometer showed 76[degrees] when I went to bed at 1 o'clock tonight --

Stock Board, Adjourned -- 4th Decorations

Variable -- Morning clear & hot -- Noon cloudy & cooler -- 3 PM a very light shower -- cleared off hot again -- 86[degrees] -- Stock Board adjourned yesterday for 4th of July vacation till next Monday -- About town -- much 4th decoration going on -- Evening Play of "East Lynne" by the Russell Co at theater drew a very slim house -- I was at Enterprise, read proof on my much deferred "Along the Railroad" which goes in

Friday July 3

Clear & pleasant -- Cooler & breezy -- About town -- Evening the Russell Co gave last performance -- "Geraldine" -- I was not there -- Bed 12 -- lots of decorations for the 4th all about town -- [Wm?] Meadows of the Wm Tell House, opposite where I live, on C st, died at 6 AM, after short illness heart trouble, etc -- Old timer -- 59 yrs old -- My "Along the Railroad" was published in this mornings Enterprise --

Saturday July 4

Clear & pleasant -- One of the best celebrations ever on the Comstock -- I rode with Doc Delavan and old Klink in a carriage -- 4 in hand -- black horses -- provided for the occasion -- Subsequently at 2:30 PM was at exercises at Opera House -- Evening at ball -- Bed at 12 --- Excursion train from Reno & Carson was eight passenger coaches well filled -- brought Reno Guard and Carson Guard & lots of folks beside -- arrived about 11 AM -- Procession formed on B st after guests had lunched etc and started about noon -- Nationals, Emmetts, Reno and Carson Guards, Battery A Artillery, Fire Depts of Va & [?H] -- Goddesses of Liberty etc -- Several young ladies on horses among the aids in advance -- Cara's Artillery band -- and Silver State Band -- 40 girls and 30 boys of 4th Ward high school -- all in uniform, on foot -- finest feature of the procession -- principal streets -- Divide and back, & dispersed in

Fourth of July -- Leo Hechinger's Feat

[Freethy?] -- Giles Poet -- George Noel Reader -- good singing, music, etc -- I was in audience -- All passed off finely -- I raised Pioneer flag in morning & took it down in the evening -- Ball biggest & best I have seen here on such occasion -- Drill of the school girls on ball room floor just spendid -- Whole city a wilderness of flags -- Everything passed off gloriously with no trouble, etc --

Meadows' funeral -- Pioneers' Annual Election

Sunday July 5

Same -- Everybody getting over the 4th -- PM about town -- Evening ditto -- Bed 12 -- Funeral of Billy Meadows this PM well attended -- 43 carriages and about 60 Odd Fellows on foot in advance -- He was member of Nevada Lodge IOOF --

Monday July 6

Clear & pleasant -- About town as usual -- Bed at 1 --

Tuesday July 7

Same -- cooler -- Evening annual meeting of the Pioneers -- Election of officers --- I re-elected President-- Old officers re-elected -- Only 8 of the old boys present -- meeting held at International saloon, club room -- Wrote it up, gave it into Enterprise -- Bed 1 --

Variable & cool -- Early morning cloudy, with a very light snow squall for a few minutes -- About town -- Bed 1 -- Cloudy, cold, blustering --

Friday July 10

Same -- PM & evening light showers of rain laid the dust finely -- About town -- Bed 1

Saturday July 11

Clear & pleasant -- warmer -- but morning almost frosty -- PM I labeled & fixed up a lot of specimens accumulated during the last year or 2 at the International saloon for the Pioneer cabinet: aluminum, copper and silver ore, crystals, etc, and a Japanese cane -- Bob Patterson will take them to Carson tomorrow & place them in Pioneer cabinet in State Capitol -- Bed at 1 -- Recd letter from Frank Kearney today, Lexington, Kentucky -- Dated July 6. He reached there in 4 days from Reno -- found his relatives & home all right --

A Nicholls -- Letters for WP Bennett $2 -- Dinner at Zimmers JW Harris -- Room rent -- Bessie's 17th Birthday

Sunday July 12

Clear & pleasant -- As usual -- got letter from A. Nicholls, LosAngeles, Cal -- PM I wrote 4 letters to parties in California for W P Bennett -- Took me 2 1/2 hours & he paid me $2 -- At 5 PM dined at Zimmer's residence -- Z & wife, his sister, Mrs Lutjens of G. H. & myself -- participated -- then we had music by the 2 Z's on piano

Same -- Bed 12 -- Bessie's birthday -- 17 yrs old

Tuesday July 14

Same -- Bed 12 -- Met JW Haines, of the State University Regents, in town today -- had quite a chat -- He came up on the noon train from Carson, and returned on the evening train -- Borrowed $10 of Campbell of the Enterprise today and paid my room rent to Joe Douglass - Got the two worst snubs of my Nevada life today -- JW

Two Terrific Snubs

Haines told Bob Patterson that my wife's application before the Board of Regents for a position in the State University was hanging fire on my account -- She was considered competent enough but she had a "drunken husband" -- Haines however left with his mind disabused of that idea - Guess Lew Stevenson has been getting in some revenge work down in Reno -- About 5 PM Nelson, a friend of mine, on C st -- He had a drunken friend along named George Pease, a miner, of Gold Hill -- Introduced me to him and George incidentally remarked that he had known me a long time, but

Two Terrific Snubs -- 85[degrees] Knocked Clear Out -- Centennial

said he: "You never amounted to much" -- Too such snubs in one day is rather discouraging, but I guess I'll worry through all the same and nevertheless --
