Monday Aug 31

Clear and 85[degrees] -- At noon, WP Bennett came from Gold Hill & I wrote a letter -- 4 pages -- for him to WN Slocum editor of the "Carrier Dove" No 121 Eighth st San Francisco & he paid me $1 -- Evening about town -- Bed 1 -- Morris Davis, who was apprenticed & learned his trade as printer in the News office when I became proprietor died in Reno Thursday, of diphtheria --

Fig Leaves Bennett $2 -- 73 yrs old Pawnee Medicine Co Show

Tuesday Sept 1, 1891

Clear & 80[degrees] -- About town as usual -- Big fire at Winnemucca Sunday PM destroyed all the business part of the town -- loss $300,000, Insurance $100,000 -- Evening at room -- made 8 fig leaves -- Bed 3 --

Wednesday Sept 2 --

Same -- WP Bennett caught me on the street at 10 AM, and took me to my room and made me take notes for 2 hours, & afterward 5 hours writing out the same -- 7 hours straight work without quit or let up, till finished -- Series of his visionary sketches to some friend -- Hard incessant work but made good job of it, and he paid me $2 on account -- He is 73 yrs old today. Evening at the Pawnee Doctor show at Opera House -- Still running free show to big houses -- Bed at 1 --

Friday Sept 4

Same -- 80[degrees] -- As usual -- Evening Enterprise office with a few items -- read proof etc -- Bed 2 -- a light shower getting in -- 77[degrees] in my room as I went to bed --

Saturday Sept 5

Cloudy & 12[degrees] cooler -- Several light showers during the day -- Miners Union picnic -- No very big crowd -- About half as much as the Caledonian picnic -- I didnt go -- Didn't rain much in Carson, but picnic rather of a failure financially & generally -- Excursion train about an hour late in getting back (9 PM) by reason of accident, to local train ahead of them, this side of Mound House -- Last picnic of season -- Bed 12 --

The Bancroft Company -- Trouble

Pawnee Co Free Show continued -- Dined with Zimmer

Sunday Sept 6

Clear & pleasant -- 73[degrees] -- As usual -- Dunning letter from the Bancroft Co SF -- Wish me to pay the notes I gave them Oct 19, 1885, now nearly outlawed -- Evening I dined at Zimmer's, with his family, at home, with Murphy, one the of comedy & variety troupe with the Pawneee Medicine Co -- nigger and Irish specialties on his part -- Very nice dinner, with music, etc, after till nearly 11 -- down town -- Bed 1--

Clear & pleasant -- about 75[degrees] -- Trying to complete my Centennial Hitchcock negociation -- Evening Opera House -- Pawnee Indian Medicine Co's free show continued

Cloudy & PM & evening showery -- Evening at Pawnee show -- Big house etc -- Bed at 12:30 -- still showery and getting muddy -- Much cooler weather --

Thursday Sept 10

Cloudy & cooler -- Big shower about 5 AM -- PM I rode with SD Baker in his buggy to County Hospital -- visited Dr Delavan, also Billy Johnson whose leg was broken recently -- Evening at the Pawnee show -- 1st class, & crowded house -- Bed at 1 --

Friday Sept 11

Clear cloudy & cool -- Evening at Pawnee show then at Entrprise, then at "Shabby Genteel" ball" at NG Hall -- Bed 2 --

Funeral of Mrs John F Egan -- Exempts Dinner at Zimmer's $100 more from Centennial Hitchcock

Saturday Sept 12

Clear & pleasant -- As usual -- Evening Enterprise -- Bed 2 --

Sunday Sept 13

Same -- PM big funeral of wife of John F Egen, State Treasurer -- Governor & all

other State officers present -- about 100 carriages -- I attended regular monthly meeting of Exempts -- at 5 PM went up to Zimmer's by invitation to dinner -- Murphy the comedian also there -- Mr & Mrs Z and the 2 kids, Eddie Zimmer and Hazel Piper -- After dinner we had lots of singing music & a very pleasant conversational time -- Bed at 12:30 --

Monday Sept 14

C & P 70[degrees] -- Much cooler weather is apparently inaugurated -- JH Hitchcock paid me $100 more on Centennial -- I went around & paid some of my bills to extent of $35 -- Evening at Pawnee show -- Good, and full house as usual -- Was at Enterprise -- Bed 2 --

Wife $5 -- Death of Mrs JG Fair

The Fort John Clough -- Big Rain

Tuesday Sept 15

Cloudy & cool -- less than 70[degrees] -- Sent short letter, written yesterday PM too late to connect with mail or tain, containing $5 greenback to wife -- Evening showery -- Fred Clough and his father came to my room by invitation and we had a big old interesting talk about Fort John, Amador Co Cal where the elder Clough & I were, before Fred was born -- Read my Journal of that time to them -- played the old banjo etc -- Afterward down town with them -- Steady pouring rain for hours -- Bed at 1 -- still raining -- Mrs Theresa Fair the divorced wife of Jas G Fair died in San Francisco Sunday PM - 46 yrs of age -- worth $6,000,000 -- Divorced from JG Fair

Cloudy & cold -- About 7 AM quite a heavy snowstorm -- Whitened the Palmyra range, also Mt Davidson -- First snow of the season -- PM a few light showers of rain -- Evening at Pawnee show -- good -- Big house of course -- Bed 1

Thursday Sept 17

Clear cool & pleasant -- WP Bennett called on me about noon relative to more writing he has for me to do -- Paid me $2 more -- Evening at Pawnee show -- Big house as usual, and extra good performance -- 2 bits admission -- closing of its months

The Pawnee Medicine Show leaves

No Hay fever

run -- It has had the greatest success of anything in that line ever on the Comstock -- Two doctors, brothers, named Burgess & excellent company of performers, in varieties, song, dance, juggling, acrobatic etc -- free show except Saturdays and this evening -- when 2 bits admission charged & extra good show given -- Consultations free to public every day at theater, with crowds of consultors, men women & children -- Sold bushels of "Pawnee" medicines -- "Too - re", "Pain Balm" "Magic Salve", "Worm Destroyer" etc -- Show goes to Gold Hill for next two nights, then to Reno -- I ought to be having my regular annual hay fever, but have it not as yet, Damp weather stands it off probably --
