very seriously troubled me for nearly twenty years past - It should have hit me the middle of this month but it didnt - Have had a few sneezes and a slight seemingly cold in the head at times for last few days, but not enough to call it hay fever or catarrh -

Very cold snap -- Carson Fair -- 1891 -- 500 lbs coal

Thursday October 1, 1891

Stormy - Much ice everywhere this morning - PM, light snowstorms along the Com-stock - Took excursion train to Carson at 11:15 AM - Reported fair as usual - & came back on time on ex train - Had a rough cold time of it - didn't snow in Carson but blew sharp & cold - poor chance for reporting - No good place to write Evening writing up, etc - At Enterprise some - Bed at 1:30 - Bitter cold & freezing-

Friday Oct 2

Clear & cool - Reported at Carson as usual & returned - Was at Enterprise proof reading etc - Bed at 2 - The big day of the fair - Big attendance - etc - Got in 500 pounds of coal today from Adam Gillespie - TR Smith & Co Gold Hill - Delivered while I was at Carson - So I am well fixed on fuel -

$20 more Hitchcock -- WP Bennett $2

Same - Reported fair at Carson as usual - Big fire there this morning - Old Theater block - Evening at Enterprise - wrote up, read proof, etc - Bed 4

Same - Slept late - Got around toward and in evening about town - Bed 12 -

Clear & pleasant - Got $20 from Hitchcock, paid $12 borrowed money etc and my Odd Fellows dues 3 - Evening about town some - Bed 11 -

Same - AM at room, washing up, straightening out things - At noon WP Bennett came - I wrote a couple of letters, 1 to his wife Salt Lake, & other to his daughter Alice Bennett, Los Angeles - He paid me $2 - Evening down town - JB Marshall sold out of

his Louvre saloon this PM to Dan Hanifan, his barkeeper this PM. In the windup Joe presented me with the biggest apple I ever saw which he has had on exhibition in the saloon for last 3 weeks - It is from Smith's valley, Esmeralda County & weights a strong pound & a half - Evening about town & at Enterprise office, & bed 3 - This evening on my way to room I picked up a very neat little briar root pipe on the sidewalk, front of Mellon's store - genuine briar root, with horn mouth piece and silver band round middle of stem - Somebody dropped it of course - Don't know who - I obtained the address of Mrs JW Mackay today for my wife from John Donahue,

Wednesday Oct 7

Same - About as usual - Charles Stewart Parnell, the great Irish patriot leader died at 11:30 last night at Brighton England - Cause, reheumatic chill or congestion etc - Bed 1 - Professor Louis Zimmer has been living in Gold Hill the last week or so, residing with his siter Mrs Lutjens and family - being seperated from his wife, who has sued for divorce, on grounds of failure to provide, extreme cruelty, drunkensss etc - She wll retain charge of their little son Eddie, between 5 & 6 yrs old.

Irrigation Meeting -- Hitchcock $20 more

Same - About as usual - Evening Mass meeting of the citizens of Storey County on the irrigation question at the Court House - I went up at 8 oclock - Nobody there except Harry Sutherland and Under Sheriff Joe Bleakley - I call the meeting to order, made Harry secy & Joe audience, appointed all three as delegates to the Mississippi Congress on Irrigation to be held at Omaha on the 15th insant - ad-journed - Bed 1 - But there had been half a dozen or so others at the hall before we were and they made up a similar meeting which was more legitimate and reported in the papers - WEF Deal president, & Alf Chartz Secretary -

Same - Got $20 more from Hitchcock - Evening at room, reading, writing etc - Bed at 12

Saturday Oct 10

Same - Odd jobs- Mailed a letter to my daughter Mary G Dotan, Reno, containing a few little notions by way of surprise & amusement - Also letter to Frank Kearney, Lexington Ky, with some weekly Enterprises - Evening at Enterprise with a few items, read proof etc - Bed 3 -

Sunday Oct 11

Same - cooler - As usual - PM & evening about town some - Bed 11:30 - Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement commences at 6 oclock tonight & runs till same hour tomorrow night - The Jews close business places & have religious services, fasting - I have engaged to examine a mine tomorrow near the old Daney mine, Spring Valley, so if I get killed this is my closing record - Didn't go & did't get killed -

Clear cool & pleasant - Didnt go down to the Dane as expected - The party to take me there failed to fill in - Get there later perhaps - Got in an item or 2 in Enterprise - Bed 1 -

Tuesday Oct 13

Same - Rose at 9 AM - washed & fixed up & at 10:30 left in buggy, with Bill (Tindgen) - Went to old Daney mine, Spring Valley, where I went with him a couple of years ago - Examined south extension this time - went down a shaft, 65 feet deep, both feet in the tub, & holding with hands to rope - examined ledge in the cross-

cutting - 18 ft wide - Took lunch at cabin of Thudgen & 3 or 4 others interested - before went down shaft - Stopped in Silver City short time & was back to Va at 5 PM - Evening about town - Bed 1 - Letters from Reno say Millie & baby left Saturday for their home in Oakland -

Same - About town - Eyes very sore, and nose somewhat plugged from hay fever the result of yesterdays tramp - Only genuine decided touch I have had of it this season and unusually late - Bed 12 -

Cloudy with stron, cold west wind - About as usual - At Enterprise couple of hours or so - Bed 1 -

Clear & pl - About as usual - Evening wrote up my Daney report, but couldn't get in the paper - Re-wrote & improved it - Will make a full column - Bed 2 -

Saturday Oct 17

Same - Evening at Enterprise - Read proof on my Daney report etc, Bed 2 - Stocks lower today than for many months - Con Va touched 4 1/2 - About noon today, C st, I met Major EB Stonehill, formerly of this city, but now of San Francisco - He came up a day or two, to attend to some business in connection with the Sutro Tunnel Co - His wife has been at Sutro, guest of Mrs Sept CC Thomas last 2 wks -
