Winter preparations about the house, etc -- Evening down town for an hour -- Home again -- Bessie on violin, Sammy on banjo and I on flute had our first grand concert in the kitchen and really did finely -- Bed 10 -- clear but very blustering --

Very cloudy and threatening -- Snow falling on the Sierra -- Bowels still bad -- Took morning train and arrived at Va on time at 11:15 AM -- PM and evening about town -- Bed 12 -- Bowels still bad --
Bennett $2 -- cold -- 1891 Father's old Violin, etc received

Cloudy and blustering, with occasional spits of snow -- not enough to lay the dust -- Toward evening cleared off -- PM I wrote four letters for WP Bennett & got $2 - Evening mostly at room, reading, writing and researching -- By express this day arrived a box to me containing my father's old violin and packages of Christmas presents for each and all of my family, even to Millie -- That violin is a very interesting old relic -- over 100 years in our family I think -- Bed at 3 --

Clear & coldest of season thus far -- froze all day in the shade -- Was about town most of day -- Evening wrote about column of "Outside Observations" -- Bed 12 --

Cloudy and moderate -- Snow commenced falling on the commencement of Winter about 10 AM & continued right along -- PM about town some -- Evening at Enterprise, reading proof, etc -- Snow 8 inches deep on regular level -- Bed at 2 --

Clear cold & pleasant -- So slippery that I staid at room most of day -- Evening at ball of Young ladies [C.?]P.F. society at Opera House -- Big crowd -- Between 4th & 5th dances 20 of them in red white & blue uniform etc gave military drill on

stage -- each was armed with light pole or staff about 4 ft long wound specially with red white & blue ribbon -- Very fine exhibition -- Got back to room safely about 11 -- Sharp cold night -- Had a good fire, and penciled 6 pages of a letter to Cornelia acknowledging receipt of violin & presents -- Bed at 4 -- Sleighing excellent all day today, cutters out, grocery deliveries etc on runners --

Same -- good sleighing continues -- About town some -- Paid my Centennial ass't, $7.50 -- Evening wrote big 7 page letter to Cornelia, responsive, to one long nice one rec'd from her this morning -- etc --

Room -- Sent Cornelia's letter in one to wife, she to add to & forward -- Evening wrote 3 page letter to son Sammy -- Bed 3 --

Cloudy & thawy -- PM took my old father violin up to Jose Salinas to straighten up the finger board, cure a crack in the belly and rub it up generally -- 2 PM I attended regular monthly meeting of the Exempts -- Had a hot argument with Charley Bowman, regarding the cabinet of the Society comparing and he referring to the Pioneer cabinet detrimentally -- After adjournment he wanted to fight me, and in fact threatened to slap my face, applying some very insulting remarks -- But he didn't do it -- Evening I went to the Methodist church services to soothe my feelings -- Then to my room & staid there, reading, writing etc -- Bed a 2 1/2 -- At 4 PM I dined with Mr & Mrs John Connerton at their home
