at the Enterprise awhile (3 hours) Got Fred Clough's letter in -- read proof etc -- Bed 2 -- Clear & cold --

Republican State Convention

Saturday April 30

Variable & cold with high winds and occasional small sprinkles of snow -- Dusty PM, attended Republican State Convention -- Evening about town -- Bed 12 -- Met many old friends from all parts of the State. Philip A Doyle Chairman, Wm [Sutherland?] Secy and Wm Oates, Sgt-at-Arms -- Commenced at 2 PM & through at 5 --

1892 -- Alfred E Phillips -- Snow Railroad time changed

Sunday May 1, 1892

Cloudy & and cold with occasional light snow squalls and a strong blustering wind. Most of the outside delegates left for home last evening or this morning -- PM I was about town -- Evening wrote a nice two page to Alfred H Phillips, Austin -- He was the devil of the Reveille when I was its editor -- He is now the editor. He came in here as delegate to the State Convention yesterday. I met him but he had so grown out of my recollection that I did not recognize him although he did me, therefore I apologetically send him this letter. Bed at 2 --

Monday May 2

Cloudy and chilly with a little snow in the air occasionally -- An inch or two of snow on the ground this morning, which fell during last night -- change in railroad

time took effect today -- The regular mail, express & passenger train arrived at

Centennial Election -- Jackrabbit Ball Eureka Mill Destroyed

11:05 AM, ten minutes earlier, and left at 5:20 PM -- 40 minutes earlier -- At 10:30 AM I left my room, with M Kinzle for Gold Hill to attend the annual stockholders meeting of the Centennial at our office -- Gold Hill Assay office. I presided as President, pro-tem -- Only Kinzle, myself, and W S James of the directors present and a couple of other stockholders, but over 80,000 shares were represented, out of the 100,000. We examined into the accounts and statements for the past year and re-elected all the old officers, making Kinzle also Vice President, something we never had before, I think. Kinzle & I rode back on the 'bus at 3 PM. We footed down there in just 30 minutes -- road rather snowslushy and muddy. Evening I visited ball of Jack Rabbit Club at Opera House -- Finest & most elaborate decorations I ever saw -- Was at Enterprise, reading proof etc and got to bed pretty tired & lame at 2 oclock. Eureka mill destroyed this morning --

Same cloudy, snowy & disagreeable -- toward evening regular snow storm set in, depositing couple inches by midnight. PM about town, evening ditto -- Bed 12 -- still snowing some --

Variable & cold -- Snow melted, principally -- Very muddy -- About town -- Met Jose Salinas on street -- just over from Hospital for 1st time since he was hurt -- Has left there & will live at his home on the lawn tennis ground as before. Evening about town & at Enterprise -- Bed 2 --

Thursday May 5

Variable & cold -- PM about as usual -- Sent letters to Nicholls, Jepson, and wife. Evening, about town -- Bed 12 --

Wintry Weather -- Grand Army Ball Bennett $1

Friday May 6

Variable & Wintry -- AM some snow squalls -- PM about town -- Evening was at ball of the [GAR?] at National Guard Hall awhile -- Bed 1 --

Saturday May 7

Same -- Wrote couple of letters for Bennett & he paid me $1 -- Evening at Enterprise office while -- Wrote notice of death of Ed Fargo, etc -- Bed at 2

Sunday May 8

Fine pleasant day -- But toward evening Cloudy bad weather, windy weather set in and a light rain shower got in about 5 PM -- only laid dust, PM & evening about town -- Bed at 1 -- Still cloudy and threating -- Attended regular monthly meeting of the Exempts this PM.

Monday May 9

Cloudy & variable -- Street sprinkling commenced today for the season -- About 3 PM the Reno Elite Minstrels, a Reno musical combination arrived from there in carriages over the Geiger Grade -- About 40 of them in all -- They gave a fine street parade at 4 PM -- Band of 16 pieces, all the company on foot preceded by three gaily dressed cavaliers or heralds, horseback -- Evening at Opera House -- I was there -- Very good minstrels and variety show. Crowded house -- Bed at 1 --

G M Ardery -- Bennett's Books Charley Chatterton Killed

Tuesday May 10

Same -- PM about town some -- wrote a 2 page letter for G M Ardery, section agent and watchman down at [Baltic?] switch on the V & T RR Gold Hill -- letter was to A J Sielaff about his son throwing stones at a board fence beside the RR track. Paid me 50 cts. Also wrote a business letter for W P Bennett -- His Sky Sifter books have all come up from Oakland -- 1,000 copies, and he is now engaged in placing them for sale -- With that object in view he will go to Reno in a day or two -- Evening as usual -- Bed 1 -- Charley Chatterton, killed about noon today at the Nevada mill, was friend of mine, & contemporary over in Como, & I have known him well ever since.

Same -- Evening was at masquerade ball of National Guard awhile -- Very amusing -- funny costumes and incidents -- Grand crowd of spectators in the gallery, etc-- Bed 1 --

Thursday May 12

Variable, with several lively snow squalls -- cold and Wintry -- I about town as usual -- Bed 1 -- Dined with the Connerton's --

Friday May 13

Variable but generally pleasant -- Met wife on C st about 11 AM. Went to room, and found Bessie playing the old Doten violin & Sammy accompanying her on my banjo. Decidedly a surpise party for me -- They came up with Reno school excursion -- Only visited me short time, as they had to run with the crowd -- We four dined at French Rotisserie, & they & rest of Reno crowd left on return about 6 PM. I saw them off -- PM I took notes for a letter for G M Ardery. Evening I was at theater --

Carroll Johnson in "The Cossoon"

Carroll Johnson & dramatic co from the East, in "The Cossoon" -- Very good company and play, and a big audience -- Bed 2 --

Saturday May 14

Fine & pleasant -- Evening, cooler & blustering -- Wrote out & delivered letter No 2 from GW Ardery to AJ Sielaff, Gold Hill -- Evening about town -- Bed 1 -- Democratic primaries this PM for delegates to State Convention to be held May 26 --
