Quiet birthday--

Friday July 22

Same -- About town as usual -- Bed 12 --

Saturday July 23

Same -- Surprised by a letter from wife at 842 West street Oakland, Cal, with her aunt, Mrs Batterman -- her residence -- She went over there Wednesday to attend funeral of Mrs Gov Stevenson, who died that day & was buried yesterday. She died of operation performed for ovarian tumor. Wife thinks she will stay in Cal a week or two more, and visit Eunice -- also Fozzie Gray before comes back -- I sent a letter to Eunice by evening mail on this subject -- Evening at Enterprise -- Bed at 1:30 -- wife never was other side of the Sierra Nevada before.

Sunday July 24

Same -- By evening mail I sent letter to Eunice enclosing Sammy's pictures of the family group, the musical two -- he Bessie & I -- and Charlie & wife -- Bed at 12 --

Monday July 25

Clear & pleasant -- 87[degrees] -- Evening at Lodge -- A local artist took a flash light photo of the Lodge members, grouped at head of lodge room -- Same that took the other one recently when I was also present -- But he made a failure of that, hence this other attempt -- Bed at 1 --

Tuesday July 26

Same -- Bed 1 --

Wednesday July 27

Same -- cooler-- Very pleasant weather -- Frank M Newlands arrived this evening from the East, via Carson. I met him for a moment or so in the Crystal Saloon -- Bed at 1 -- Newlands is candidate for Congress this time.

Hot Weather East -- Jake Becker dead Mrs Stevenson's Will -- Funeral -- Milly Harris' Marriage

Thursday July 28

Same -- 88[degrees] -- Very hot weather in the East -- 50 people or more dying daily in Chicago from the extreme heat & sunstroke, etc -- 95[degrees] or 96[degrees] -- Jake Becker ("Jake the baker") died at the Hospital yesterday morning & was buried this PM -- Dropsy -- 56 yrs old -- German -- One of my old time Gold Hill friends -- Evening about town -- Bed 12 --

Friday July 29

Same -- about 87[degrees] -- same as last 2 days. Pretty hot weather, but we have cool mornings, evenings & nights, which is something Chicago and the heated East has not. Their 90 to 95 degrees is a close damp, smothering, dead heat -- Ours is a lively, clear, dry heat therefore has no sunstroke or [?] fatal effects as there; totally unknown here. Evening about town -- Bed 1 -- Jake Becker's funeral this PM well attended -- 30 carriages --

Saturday July 30

Same -- Warmer -- 90[degrees] -- Morning train at 7:45 for Carson on some little prospective items of business. Met lots of friends & acquaintences of course -- Hot day, said to be about as hot as any this season there -- Back to Va on evening train -- 5:10 -- About town & at Enterprise -- Bed at 1 -- It was just as hot in Va today as in Carson -- 90 degrees --

Same -- 88 -- As usual -- About town-- Bed 12

Bessie Caldwell's Baby Boy -- 1892 California

Monday August 1, 1892

Clear and cloudy by turns, but pretty hot generally at 90[degrees] -- With me things passed about as usual. Evening about town -- Bed 12 -- PM met Bessie Calwell's father and he got me to write out an advertisement which we put into the Va Evening Chronicle as follows: [newspaper clipping here] Evening I wrote a 3 page letter to wife, at Eunice's, Santa Clara Cal, in reply to one I got from her this morning from Oakland Cal. She was going next day or so to Eunice's -- so this letter is liable to catch her there --

Tuesday Aug 2

Same -- cooler, 86[degrees] -- Evening at Enterprise, etc, Bed 2 ---

Wednesday Aug 3

Same -- Bed at 1 -- Locked out this evening, but got back.
