New Year's Beginning -- Sutro -- Huntoon Suicide -- Col Lord and Alice Nye Marry -- Good Sleighing --

Virginia, Tuesday Jan 1, 1895

Cloudy, moderate, variable -- 40° -- Lots of New Year's visiting, sleighing parties, etc -- Turkey plenty in various saloons -- Everybody trying to feel happy and hilarious, but economically so, with apprehensive lookout for coming times ahead. PM and evening about town -- Bed 12 -- cloudy.

Wednesday Jan 2

The same -- Letter from Adolph Sutro, declining, etc. Bed at 12 -- Clear. Julius A Huntoon, County Clerk, and Ex-officio Treasurer of Lyon County for last 12 yrs suicided at Dayton New Year's Eve by pistol ball through his heart. Shortage in his accounts and surety of detection was the cause.

A Fearful Washoe Storm Zephyr -- Much Damage 1895 -- (Bonafons') leg broken

Cloudy, and melting. The most ferocious zephyr for years, from the SW, swept down the cross streets, especially at the International corner on C st made crossing Union st very perilous; Many people were blown off their feet in crossing to the Post office, and sleighs were blown around

sideways like straws. Much damage was done throughout the city to houses, roofs, windows, chimneys, stovepipes etc. Moderated a little, but still very fierce and signs of a big snowstorm coming. (Eugene Bonafons), the old time restaurant man who runs the Barnum Restaurant on C st fell this evening in crossing C st and broke his leg -- both bones -- above the ankle.

Friday January 4

Snowing very heavily from earliest morning all day. Nearly two feet fell -- C st piling up big. Express train 5 hours late -- most of the trouble this end of the V & T RR -- this side of the Mound House -- The SP yet kept open by the effective rotary plows -- the trains getting through to Reno on time, but don't know how it will be tomorrow as the storm has been fearful in the Sierra the last 24 hours. Letter from wife says Millie's new daughter, born a week before Christmas, is a "tiny little mite, with dark hair, and I think may look like Millie. I have named it Esther Armorel, and shall have to help it along." I got a letter from Oscar T Shuck, San F. with $5 greenback in it. A light rain set in about dark, and the storm abated. Bed at 12 -- clear and freezing. 2 to 5 ft of snow along C street.

Clear, cold & pleasant -- Railroads clear and trains on time -- last Friday was the only interruption -- Three to 5 feet of snow along the track of C st -- Much snow shoveling -- and filling of cellars with snow storage for Summer use -- Wrote & sent a 2 page letter to Oscar T Shuck -- Bed 12 --

Tuesday Jan 8

Variable -- thawy -- PM light rain -- At 2:30 PM I attended the marriage of Dolly McCone to Dr T P McDonald. St Mary's, Catholic, church was densely crowded -- nine-tenths women and girls. Father Tubman officiated -- Altar, etc, beautifully decorated with roses, lilies, smilax, etc, and illuminated with numerous candles. Good music -- splendid affair -- Reception held at her home on the Divide, and they left on evening train, at 5:45 for a

Cloudy & very thawy -- PM I searched the mortuary records at the County Recorder's office, for Shuck -- Bed at 1 -- clear & warm.

Clear, pleasant & very thawy -- Bed at 1 -- clear.

Friday Jan 11

Partly clear, pleasant and very thawy. Got my hair cut today, by Rauhut the barber. Bed at 12 -- Sent a letter to wife, with pamphlet of "Student's Songs," with a written copy of "Glendy Burk" -- darkey song -- copied by myself -- She says she has use for these songs.

Same -- more thawy -- PM very high SW wind betokening more storms -- AM I visited Miss Nellie Manning at the American Exchange -- About 17 or 18 yrs old -- Daughter of Mrs Kate L Welch, a lady O T Shuck writes to find out about, on account of some property involved -- She was here after the big fire of Oct 26, 1875 -- worked in a C st restaurant, as "Kittie" Welch --

Mrs Kate Welch and Nellie Manning -- 1895 Mrs Hartley Sentenced to Eleven years

was married and had 3 children -- Husband got killed in the Imperial mine -- She afterward married Mr Manning and had one child by him. He is now at

Butte, Montana, with three of the children -- 2 of Welch, and his child. The wife went out to him from here in August, leaving Nellie, her own daughter, here, under the adopted name of Nellie Manning. I think this is the Mrs Kate Welch that Shuck wants to know about -- Evening about town -- Bed at 12 -- moderate and warmer with show for rain.

Same -- PM I attended the regular monthly meeting of the Exempts -- The officers elect were duly installed, and we had nice collation -- Evening about town -- Bed 1 --

Snowed lightly nearly all day -- from early morning -- 2 or 3 inches fell -- moderate -- PM and evening foggy -- Bed at 12 --
