book in read pencil. Bed at 12 -- The Mint shortage mystery continues -- Andrew Mason, the government expert, from New York, is doing his best to solve it, but never even hints at how he is succeeding. Everybody in and about the Mint are also dumb as oysters. The whole concern is being fearfully raked over, by the SF Chronicle, the SF Argus and other papers. Received a letter from wife via Virginia, about her Aunt Lucy's death. aged 79, but stated at 76 -- Died of la grippe & pneumonia. 79 the 6th of next month. "For family reasons she is to be considered three years

younger." Died Saturday morning at 12:07. "passing away as peacefully as a child goes to sleep." Neither of her children with her but Miss Lindsey was. She has been living with her for some time past. Wife writes that Sam is sick with what the Dr says is the first stages of pneumonia. I finished at Cuttings room writing this by the good gaslight at 8:30 -- Was up to the Arlington & elsewhere afterward. Bed at 12. The trouble about Hon JG Fair's property division among his heirs still continues and more actively than ever -- He yielded a numerous crop of "last will and testaments," fresh ones springing up quite frequently. And several women claim to be his latest wives and quite a number of children claim him as their father -- one a child of his deceased son Jimmy, Jr.

"In Memoriam" -- Mrs Batterman -- 1895 Orphans' Home Change -- Wife -- Income Tax Vetoed

Wednesday March 27

Light rain most of day -- wet down the dust good -- PM I wrote "In Memoriam" on death of Mrs Batterman, and sent it to Enterprise on evening local, at 5 PM. Also wrote and sent letter to wife by evening down passenger train at 6:30 -- Evening very blustering and some rain -- Bed at 12 -- The Board of Orphans Home this PM appointed AM Beebe of Reno and wife as Supt and Matron of the State Orphans' Home, superseding Bob Grimmon and wife. Plainly a political proposition, and not for any other cause. A very wrong act for they have been the best possible father and mother of those children for years, giving perfect satisfaction -- Politics should never be allowed to interfere in that proposition -- This act on part of the Board creates general dissatisfaction. It is too coldly and politically mercenary, without honest cause. Summerfield's Income tax bill was vetoed by the Governor this PM -- $20 from Journal today --

1895 -- "Capitol Notes" -- Wife -- Kinzle -- Half fare Pass [Charley Cornwell?] -- My New Carson River Map

Thursday March 28

Cloudy, cold, blustering and evening snowsqualls -- Sent "Capitol Notes" to Journal -- Bed 12 -- Half fare pass renewed today --
