Tuesday April 2

Variable- pleasant- Secured my old room- No 7- at Tim Dempsey's, formerly Wolmering's where I was two years ago- Moved into it and slept there tonight, dropping my room 7 at the Briggs House. Bed at 12- Would have made this change before but couldn't. Tried to get a room here when I first came down from Va, but all full. Made it now because Bill Flaherty who has occupied it left for his hime, last evening, Massena, St Lawrence

1895 Room [illegible] again at Dempsey's Geo R Paynter & Son Return- Death of Kate Ward State Senator Alex Wise Dead

So I feel somewhat at home once more, and write this as I go to bed.

Wednesday April 3 Variable- PM blustering, mean weather- Bed 12

Thursday Aptil 4 Fair & colder- almost freezing in shade all day. George R Paynter & son were among the arrivals at Va today, having returned to Iowa- Mrs JAmes Ward, formerly Kate McCarthy, sister to Denis McCarthy of the Va Chronicle died last night suddenly, of heart disease- Bed 12

Same -- PM I wrote "Capitol Notes" to the Journal -- Bed 12

Sunday April 7

Same -- PM I sent a letter to wife -- Bed 12 -- The Journal of this morning did not contain my "Capitol Notes".

"Herminie" -- "The Old, Old Story" -- 1895 Smith-Lieb Comedy Co -- George R Paynter in Carson

Monday April 8

Cloudy, variable -- Evening at Opera House -- Carl Smith and Beatrice Lieb dramatic Co, in "Herminie, or the Cross of Gold" -- Not very good Co or play. Rather prosey -- 1/2 a house -- About town some, and bed at 1:30 --

Tuesday April 9

Same -- Met GR Paynter, down from Va on business -- His wife died, in Iowa four days after he got there -- Bed 12 -- The theater co played "Infatuation" to small audience -- I wasn't there --

Wednesday April 10

Variable -- chilly & blustering -- Evening at theater -- Played "The Old, Old Story" -- pretty good play -- Slim house -- Bed at 12:30 -- This was third & last night of this theater company.

The "Salvation Army" from Reno, about 5 men & 3 women in their regulation uniform, flags and bass drum paraded on street short time in evening, and held meeting at Odd Fellows Hall after usual style - crowded all could hold - Bed at 12 - Met the 2 (Honsucker) brothers, John and George this PM near Sherriffs office - Hadn't seen them for nearly 20 yrs, but recognized them - They arrived from Georgetown Cal this days train, on way to Lake Tahoe for the season, by stage tomorrow, if they can get there, by stage & sleigh - about 3 ft of snow to pass at summit - Had another old Tahoe fisherman JM Coe along with them, going over there - We all had a drink together -

Salvation Army -- Good Friday -- 1895 Johnny Jones Arrested -- The Mint !!! Prof Zimmer and the "Keeley Cure"

Friday April 12

Clear & pleasant - Bed 12 - The Salvation Army had a good audience at the Opera House this evening - 10 cts admission - after a brief street parade- Good Friday -

Saturday April 13

Variable & blustering, with light showers toward evening - 3 PM John T Jones assistant (Melter) & Refiner of the Carson Mint was arrested on charge of embezzlement - Mint shortage $77,000 all charged upon him - He gave $25,000 bonds - I wrote the matter to the Reno Journal - Bed 12 -

The Salvation Army returned to Reno this evening -- Professor Zimmer and Andy Cavanaugh came down yesterday and started in on the "Keeley Cure." Zimmer told me this PM that he already had lost desire for liquor -- He will take the full treatment for a month -- $130 --

Clear & pleasant -- East Sunday -- Extra interesting services in all the churches, & good attendance -- Bed 12 --

Monday April 15

Same -- Sent short letter to journal on the Mint. Bed at 12 --

Same -- Sent short note to Journal and letter to wife -- Bed 12 --

Wednesday April 17

Same -- PM I sent letter to Journal -- Bed 12 -- George [Lassmon?] married Miss Nellie Sweeney at noon today at Catholic church here, Orders by telegraph rec'd from Washington to the Mint to purchase no more silver, and to ship the bullion etc -- on hand to San Francisco --

starter of the JT Jones Mint investigation -- Evening sent short account of it to Journal -- Further hearing postponed till next Tuesday -- Mrs Hartley's case in Supreme Court argued and submitted yesterday & today -- Bed at 12 -- Much deep excitement about the recent horrible murders of the two young girls, Minnie E Williams and Blanche Lamont in a church in San Francisco by a young felow named Theodore Durrant

Friday April 19

Same -- PM I wrote & sent letter to Journal -- Bed at 12 -- Shipment of bullion from the Mint to the US Sub Treasury, San Francisco commenced last evenings train -- $500,000 gold -- this evening $40,000 unparted bullion --

$78,000 more bullion shipped -- Journal -- 1895 Damon and Pythias

Saturday April 20

Same -- PM wrote & sent letter to Journal-- $78,000 more unparted gold bullin sent from the Mint to the SF Mint this evening. I attended theatre -- "Damon and Pythias" by an amateur company from Reno, under the management of ES Laurie, his wife and daughter, "little Lizzie" appearing in the cast. He recited "The Moneyless Man" -- The whole was of unusual excellence even for professional -- but had rather of a slim audience -- 1/2 a house -- Bed 12 --
