AM cloudy but pleasant -- about noon high winds set in from all points of the compass, and PM light and heavy thunder showers -- wet down the country good -- Evening, cleared off -- At down train met Sam Jones on his way to S.F. -- More mining sales at Buckeye and Pinenut being consumated -- The Durrant murder case in San F. was postponed till next Monday on account of the sickness or disability of Dempsey, the leading Counsel for the defence --

Wednesday Oct 16

Same -- PM plenty of big clouds thunder & lightning but not a drop of rain -- PM I wrote out a nice item for the Carson Morning News, about a fake footrace and prize fight on the last day of the races of the Ormsby Dist Fair here in Carson -- Will make a column -- Handed it in to the editor, Miss Annie Martin -- 2 wagons with 14 men and supplies left here this morning for Buckeye and the new work under the administration -- Evening at Opera House -- Very good comedy Co in "Jane" and "The Lost Sheep" -- Very good & Highly amusing -- 1/2 a house -- Bed 12:30 --

Clear & pleasant -- PM I wrote a 2 page letter to Senator J P Jones, Palace Hotel, S.F. Took me about 5 hours to compose, write and copy it -- Sent it by evening mail -- Evening at Opera House -- Play, "The Colonel's Wives" -- Slim house, about same as last night -- Bed 12 --

Cloudy & cooler -- Bed 1 -- Henry Schneider, Lilian Schneider's father, the baker, -- 56 yrs old this day --

Saturday Oct 19

Same -- evening I wrote a letter, for Tim Dempsey to Thos F Kelly and Mike McDonnell, Vivian De Monto Tent Show Company, Sacramento, Cal, in reply to letters received from them at Placerville a few days ago while they were performing there -- to be a Sacramento next Monday the 21st -- 3 page letter -- Wrote & re-wrote it, etc -- Bed 2 -- John W Mackay Jr, oldest son of John W Mackay, the Bonanza King was killed yesterday near Paris, France -- thrown from horse -- About 25 yrs old -- Father now in San Francisco --

Same -- Bed 12 -- raining nicely since about 9 o'clock --

Rain! -- Wife -- Snow on Mountains -- 1895 Bad cold again & Trouble sick -- PJ Keyes Passes for S.F. Corbett Fitzsimmons Fight Declared off -- Underclothes

Heavy chills -- Wife & Bessie

Monday Oct 21

Showery -- heavy showers before daylight and several light steady rains during the day -- muddy -- Plenty of snow visible on the mountains all around -- Sent letter to wife -- Bed 12 -- Still raining lightly -- Also sent letter to Kinzle, Nev City, Cal --

Tuesday Oct 22

Cloudy & cool -- moderate -- Got a bad cold somewhere today I think -- 5 PM was taken with severe chill then with vomiting & purging -- then fever with great thirst -- Was a depot when train came down from Va at 6:30 -- Pat Keyes on board bound for San Francisco, as our Keyes lawsuit comes up Nov 2 -- Had short chat with him -- Then sat by Arlington stove couple of hours -- Then to Dempsey's & sat awhile by stove -- Took a hot punch & went to bed at 11 -- Clear & cold -- the telegrams today from Hot Springs, Ark, say that the Corbett Fitzsimmons fight is declared off, by the Florida Athletic Club. This evening I put on my entire stock of underclothes --

Wednesday Oct 23

Clear & very pleasant -- Rec'd letter from wife inclosing one from Bessie and replied -- Bed at 10:30 -- sick from a fearful chill at 7 PM -- Don't understand -- But at 5 PM yesterday, was bad but this was worse, lasting me 3/4 of an hour -- very exhausting --

1895 -- Chills & fever -- Zeimetz of Palmyra Zeimetz & Logan's mine at Palmyra, near Como

Thursday Oct 24

Same -- cooler -- About 5 PM another violent chill -- Took couple of hot drinks which shortened it to 20 minutes -- Had light fever for couple of hours -- Bed all night -- at 12 -- frosty --

Friday Oct 25

Same -- no chill -- Bed 12 -- Met Thomas Zeimetz this PM, from Como, or Palmyra. Has been equal partner with Bob Logan in the Reno mine at Palmyra, but has just sold out his half interest to Tom Hully, the millman of Six-mile canyon for $1,000 -- He got part cash, and same to Carson today in order to get a deed in perfection of his title to Hully -- Returned to Virginia on 5 PM local train -- The tunnel of the Reno mine shows a ledge from three inches to three feet wide -- Five test runs of ore have been worked from it at the Taylor mill, Silver City, the last a year ago -- about 200 tons in all -- which averaged about $30 per ton, principally gold, the bullion being worth from $3.50 to $5.50 per ounce. Zeimetz and Logan still jointly own the "Golden Chariot" and the "Columbus", the north extensions of the Reno -- Zeimetz with 2 or three others will probably work there through the winter -- Nobody working there just at prest (See Oct 30)

Saturday Oct 26

Same -- Plenty of white frost this morning -- Quite a number of men have been visiting Silver Lake mining District 35 or 40 miles from here where the Buckeye gold placers are, prospecting, locating, or looking out for their interests in that section -- Oliver Roberts came up from SF day before yesterday & went straight there with Fred Sargent, looking out for their claims -- they returned this PM. Another load of supplies, with 1/2 a dozen men went out there day before yesterday -- Quite a stir in the Buckeye boom -- I was not troubled with chills this PM, nor yesterday, & feel better -- Bed at 12 -- frosty. The smallpox is officially declared cured & gone from the Indian School -- There were 24 cases in all -- Today is 20th anniversary of Big fire at Va, Oct 26, 1875.

Sunday Oct 27

Same -- PM & evening much out of sorts and sore in bones from bad cold & cough -- Bed 10 -- No chills --

Monday Oct 28

Clear & pleasant -- Evening attended Consolidation of the two Carson lodges I.O.O.F. -- About 100 present, many from Va, Silver, Dayton, etc -- was at banquet afterward, & made little speech among others -- Bed 1 -- Carson No 4, & Capitol No 20 consol into Capitol No 4 -- I had a sweet dream of wife and home tonight --
