New Years Dinner Journal $10 1 Comstock December Payroll, $68, 272, 41 1896 Bessie

Carson City, Nevada

Wednesday January 1, 1896

Clear and pleasant -- Lovely weather -- not below freezing tonight -- By special invitation I took New Years dinner about 5 PM, at lower end of town with Professor McAlister, Judge Black, Dottie Lee and May Williams -- Turkey, pudding, pie, pleasant conversation, etc during my two hours visit -- Evening about town -- everybody enjoyed New Year after usual style as suited them best -- Bed 12 --

Same -- Received $10 from the Reno Journal.

Same -- about as usual --

Saturday Jan 4

Met Bill Zirn of the Zirn mine, Pine-nut in town today -- Comstock pay-roll for December $68, 272, 41 about $6,000 less than for November --

Sunday Jan 5

Same -- Wrote & sent letter to daughter Bessie, at Reno. Bed at 1

Clear & pleasant -- streets getting dusty -- Bed 12 --

Same -- sent a letter "Capitol Notes" to the Reno Journal -- Gov John E Jones of Nevada reported to have died in San Francisco at 7:30 this evening -- He left here for San F two or three months ago for treatment for stomach troubles --

Thursday Jan 9

Same -- Wrote & sent "Capitol Notes" to the Reno journal -- also 2 page letter to Col PJ Keyes by this mornings train to Virginia -- Telegrams from S.F. say Gov Jones not dead, but very low -- The flag on the State Capitol displayed at 1/2 mast last evening, in token of his death was taken down this morning --

Attended & reported examination of Joseph Langevin for insanity before a board of Carson physicians -- at the county court house -- They pronounced him sane -- Sent report in letter to Reno Journal -- Received a letter

from Col PJ Keyes, Virginia, dated this morning -- Got my half fare pass over the V & T RR renewed for present year, till next December, for self and wife.

Same -- Received a letter from Bessie, Reno, this morning and responded by evening mail -- Also sent letter to M Kinzle, Nevada City, Cal -- Also a 2 page letter to H Freeman, 967 Euclid St, St Paul, Minnesota, in response to letter from him asking all information regarding the Centennial mine -- Bed 12 --

Variable -- Light hail storm this morning and light rain showers occasionally during the day -- Sent brief note to Bessie --

Variable -- light showers in evening -- Sent letter to wife --

Same -- AM, heavy wind storms and big dust -- PM light hail and snow storms laid the dust -- Big storm threatened -- Sent letter to Journal -- Evening wrote letters to PJ Keyes, Va and Frank Shay, S.F. mailed them

Stormy -- High SW wind with light sprinkles of rain -- It moderated toward evening and about 8 a strong steady rain set in for the night -- Sent letter to Journal -- Evening I wrote a letter for Tim Dempsey, to Wm A Flaherty -- Massena, St Lawrence County, New York, in response to one received from him Dec 16th, last, a two page, gossipy letter -- Mailed it -- Bed at 1, raining good & steady --

Same -- Good showers -- ground well soaked -- Sunshine & clouds -- PM I visited Acting Gov Sadler at his office -- Gov Jones reported improving a very little, with a single chance of life -- Sent letter to Journal -- Bed 12 -- raining steadily -- Big rains last 3 or 4 days all over California --

Same -- PM & evening showery -- I attended trial of Parkinson contempt case in the Justice court and reported it for the Journal -- Bed 1 -- Cloudy but not raining --

Same -- Very rainy weather -- California flooded -- Sent letter to Journal -- Rec'd letter from Kinzle, Nevada City today -- D Circe filed affidavit in U S Court today upon which Coffin will be arrested -- Col P J Keyes passed for San F this evening -- I met & talked with him at the train -- Our suit to come off next Thursday in San F -- Bed 12:30 -- raining hard --

Showery & colder -- letter to Journal -- one from Kinzle received -- U S Court met and adjourned till next Monday at 10 AM -- Letter from Webster with $10 -- Bed 12 -- Freezing good and hard --

Generally fair -- No rain -- Sent letter to wife -- Uncle Tom's Cabin played at the Opera House tonight, by the Cook Twin Sisters Company, from the East -- Good house, notwithstanding boycotting of the newspapers for not advertising -- The papers at Va where they played last evening
