Cloudy -- variable -- Twelve volunteers from Wadsworth, went up on morning train and all were accepted as members of the new Cavalry company -- this making 56 out of the 84 required -- Col W H H Pike came in with them, from Wadsworth this morning, as recruiting officer at that place & went on to Carson with them, he returning on evening train -- I met him. He says a telegram received from Capt Cox of the other Cavalry Co which left last Saturday, & are now at their destination, Cheyenne, says the regiment with them will leave there for San Francisco within a week -- The armored cruiser Charleston left Mare Island this AM for Manila -- no troops -- full cargo of war supplies, ammunition, etc for Dewey -- This the first -- The Oregon is all right & with Sampson's fleet -- Schley's squadron has arrived at Key West & will join Sampson directly when both are expected to tackle the Spanish fleet from Cape Verde, which is said to be off, Venezuela and Columbia -- The new battleship Alabama was launched today from Cramp's yard, Philadelphia -- Will be several months before she can be completed & ready for war service --
