Wednesday June 1, 1898

Variable, blustering, dusty & disagreeable -- Storming in the mountains all day -- Jason Libbey and Curtis Seagraves, two of our University Cadets left about 8 AM on bicycles for the Keswick mine, northern part of California, about 300 miles from here, where they seek employment for the vacation, or longer -- a pretty arduous trip -- I got my letter off to Eunice this morning mail -- Sunday working in the Comstock mines was entirely suspended on Sunday last for the first time in the history of the great lode -- Sign of the times -- My two stories, "The Golden Cryptogram" and "Wildcat Joe", returned from the Black Cat competition today, with printed list of the successful ones -- So I wasn't in it -- and have lost $1500 that I didn't win -- War news contradictory & very unsatisfactory -- Regiment from South Dakota of 1,000 men, in 3 train sections, expected to pass through here for San F tonight -- Bed 11 -- cold, blustering, & disagreeable same as all day -- Frosty --

Variable, more pleasant -- The South Dakota regiment went through about 12 oclock last night -- with a wild whoop -- hurrah -- Didn't stop long -- Frost and ice in various parts of town this morning -- University windup today -- Most business places in town closed to attend University windup today & big crowds of people went -- I footed over there -- The exercises were held in the gymnasium -- crowded and interesting -- Raising new flag on the new flagstaff -- 107 ft high -- with dedication exercises very enthusiastic & American -- 23 students, including seven girls graduated -- My boy Sam, president of the graduating class -- Each received their diplomas -- Reno Guard attended -- also the GAR vets -- Was about town and home at 5 PM -- Wrote letter to Black Cat, acknowledging receipt of reject M.S.S. and telling them to send the other 1 yr subscription to Bessie -- as I am entitled to two & they only sent one -- Bessie T Doten, West Side, Santa Clara Co, Cal -- Schley's big victory corroborated and great details given -- Bed 11 -- clear & cold --

Same -- just before noon the new troop of Nevada Volunteer Calvalry 83 in number, including the three officers arrived on the local passenger train from Carson in special car, bound for Cheyenne, where with the other Nevada Calvalry Co they join and be attached to a regiment, to be ordered to

Manila shortly, it is thought -- They marched to the Pavilion at once, where they were lunched and dined by the Red Cross ladies of Reno -- were about town, as they pleased during the PM, visiting friends, relatives, etc. At 7 PM they were escorted to the open space near the depot by the Reno Guard with band -- Big crowd of people -- bonfire -- exercises on porch of the Palace Hotel -- Dr Stubbs presided -- Speeches by TV Julien, B F Curler Jr, FH Norcross, Dr Stubbs, Gov Sadler, etc -- Swords presented o Capt Linscott, and Lieuts Gignoux and Wright by University cadets, and citizens with usual form -- High school girls & boys sang patriotic songs from the balcony, band played -- much hurrahing and great general enthusiasm -- Train from Cal came along at 8:40 -- Our boys had two special sleeping cars -- train made long wait to say final good bye's, and finally

pulled out at 9:30 for the East -- The boys had splendid send off -- They carried a beautiful little company banner of orange colored silk, etc presented by citizens of Carson -- Another white frost last night & this morning -- Bed 12 -- clear & cold -- Three of the boys who got drunk & disorderly about town this afternoon were promptly discharged by Capt Linscott & their places filled by Reno recruits --

White Frost Morning -- 1898 Sampson Joins Schley and They Cork Up the Spanish Fleet

Saturday June 4

Clear -- pleasant -- Odd jobs -- Sam preparing for a camping trip out in the Sierra Valley and Independence lake section -- with Guy Walts -- Evening at Journal office awhile -- Bed 12 -- cold & frosty -- white frost this morning, in fact every morning thus far this month -- generally along the river, and strongest down at Glendale & below in the valley of the Truckee -- Sampson has joined Schley with his fleet and are making things very uncomfortable about Santiago -- bombarding forts etc -- They sent a big collier ship the Merrimac and sunk her yesterday morning in the narrow channel of the [main?] harbor entrance, thus blocking the Spanish fleet in -- Lieut Hobson and 7 other daring men did this under big fire of batteries, then rowed in a boat to Spanish flagship & surrendered as prisoners of war -- Brilliant exploit --

Clear warm & pleasant -- Sam with Guy W Walts a fellow graduate for a companion started out about 7:30 AM on their camping trip -- They had a buck-board and black mare belonging to Walts also a gray Jennet led behind -- well fitted with grub, utensils, fishing poles, rifle, bedding, etc -- Wife rode with them to 2 or 3 miles above Verdi, where

Clear, warm, & pleasant -- PM I wrote 3 page letter to George R Paynter, BIg Oak Flat, Tuolumne County, California -- Also wrote article for Journal, entitled: Morro and Schley, relating to pronunciation, spelling, and meaning of those names. Took it to Journal office and at 10 went there & read proof -- The invasion of Cuba goes on with a rush, large bodies of troops being landed on the east end, near Santiago -- The 3,000 insurgent troops in conjunction -- Heavy siege guns landed, will bombard Spanish fleet from the hills -- while American fleet destroys the fortresses at entrance of harbor -- The city of Santiago will also be shelled if necessary -- Big battles expected at any moment -- Evening cloudy, with one
