Same -- toward evening it clouded up & was storming in the mountains -- The Oregon State Election held yesterday, for Governor, US Senator & all State officers went overwhelmingly Republican -- War news about as yesterday -- Bombarding forts at Santiago very effective -- Worked at making a new half window screen for my room -- Evening down town -- Bed 12 -- cloudy --

90 -- Dry Thunder Storm -- "Remember the Main" Iowa Regiment Passes Reno -- Monterey off for Manila Investment of Santiago -- Reported Surrender of Manila

Wednesday June 8

Same -- PM clouded up with heavy thunder storm in the Sierra but no rain here -- only some thunder & lightning -- Finished my window screen, and did up some sewing, etc -- Didn't go down town today, but stayed at home working -- About 10:30 the first of three railroad sections with an Iowa regiment passed through for S.F. consisted of one battalion -- Only stopped about 5 minutes -- didnt get out -- cars bore war cry: "Remember the Maine" -- Much shouting and cheering as they passed through town --Bed 11 -- clear & cooler -- Rain falling all around us this PM -- cooled the atmosphere -- The armored cruiser Monterey sailed for Manila yesterday from S.F. accompanied by a big collier, Brutus, via Honolulu -- troops and supplies -- More troops being landed in Cuba for investment of Santiago -- Sampson has nearly bombarded the forts into silence at entrance of the harbor --

Thursday June 9

Same weather as yesterday -- with very light shower -- not enough to lay the dust -- The other two sections of Iowa regiment passed through at 6 & 7 oclock this morning -- A telegram says that Manila has surrendered to Dewey, as a matter of protection against the insurgents. Sent strong

Cloudy & cooler -- After silencing the batteries by the battleship Oregon, et al, the city & harbor of [Guantanoma?], Cuba, was captured yesterday, 600 marines landed & took possession and the American flag was raised for the first time over Cuba -- The Grand Lodge K of P concluded 3 days session

Tuesday June 14

Clear & pleasant -- The west bound train at 9 AM brought our second troop of Nevada cavalry which went from here a week ago last Friday, back from Cheyenne, on their way to San F and to Manila -- Big crowd at the depot welcomed them, and the Red Cross piled a wagon load of lunch onto them -- enough for a regiment -- Boys looked fine & happy -- Only stopped about ten minutes -- Had a rancorous discussion this PM in family about my youngest daughter Mary Goodwin Doten taking upon herself to change her name to Goodwin Stoddard Doten -- Evening down town -- Met Owen Fraser and Ben Highbee, from Va on a trip to S.F. Bed 1 --

Wednesday June 15

Same -- Evening the High School graduating exercises took place at the Opera House -- I attended -- densely crowded -- The exercises very interesting after usual style -- My youngest daughter, Mary Goodwin Doten, graduated with first honors under her assumed name of Goodwin Stoddard Doten -- Exercises commenced at 8 & closed at 11 -- Bed 1 --

Same -- Fixed up "Wildcat Joe," and shipped him to Hon M H de Young, San Francisco Chronicle tonight -- private note etc -- The second fleet of soldiers, etc, for Manila -- 3,500 sailed from San F yesterday -- Evening down town -- Bed 12 -- A full regiment of Tennessee volunteer infantry -- 1,200 men -- passed in three RR sections from 5 to 9 o'clock -- AM for San F -- Jewett Adams is reported better -- can sit up again --

Same -- 108 recruits from Iowa, to fill Iowa regiment companies now at SF passed through this AM on west bound train -- Red Cross gave 'em lots of good lunch -- Only stopped about 15 minutes -- nice looking boys, but poorly clothed -- no uniform -- I copied Goodie's graduating essay for myself -- Bed 11 -- Under the last call for troops, Nevada has been allotted three companies of infantry -- Same sort of case as my friend -- Harmon Kirchner (See Dec 15, 1896) Saw new, this years apples on sale at fruit store today -- from Cal -- First of season -- I have 4 last years apples in my room -- good ones.
