Clear & pleasant -- The grand American assault upon Santiago de Cuba commenced this morning by land and sea -- Sampson bombarding the forts at the entrance and Shafter advancing upon the city -- Very lively battle -- "Hot time in the old town tonight" -- Received "Black Cat" magazine for July yesterday -- I am left out entirely in the prize story competition -- Evening down town -- Met Tommy Rowe, engineer, Gold Hill of old -- we affiliated or re-affiliated & had good social old time converse -- Has been working at Overton, engineering, last 4 months, has got out & is going home to his wife & babies in Gold Hill tomorrow -- Bed 12 --

Saturday July 2

Same -- Battle of Santiago progressing furiously, with great slaughter on both sides, but we are getting best of it, taking outside works, etc -- and driving Spaniards into the city -- Sampson busy demolishing the big entrance forts -- getting ready to go into the harbor -- Extensive decorations going on all about town for the 4th -- About 9 o'clock this evening -- Mr John Green, a wagon maker threw a lighted Chinese bomb into street -- didn't go, so when he went to pick it up it went -- Doctors amputated hand at
