better than I had all night, heading off possible morning chill nicely -- Rose at 9, light breakfast, felt much better and convalescent -- Staid at home all day, & had no chill --

128 -- Cooler Weather -- SF Report -- Wicks -- Wool Prosperity Austin Dead -- Nev Troops Ordered Mustered Out -- New & Tragic Excitement in France in the Dreyfuss Case

Thursday September 1, 1898

Clear cool and breezy -- like Fall weather -- Kept chills off with medicine -- felt well enough to go down town this PM -- Evening sent letter to SF Daily Report, to send me copy of last Saturday's Report -- inclosed five 2 ct stamps -- also sent letter to New Jersey Wick Co for free sample as advertised in Youth's Companion, of the Marshall Process Wick with booklet -- inclosed 2 ct stamp for reply -- The Reveille says that for the first time in nearly a third of a century not a steam whistle is heard in the town of Austin -- Yesterday Gov Sadler rec'd a telegram from Genl Corbin, at Washington DC ordering the Nevada troops of the war to be mustered out -- It will be done at Carson as soon as the proper officer arrives, and they are paid off, etc -- They have to return all arms, equipments, etc, and pass surgical examination same as when mustered in. This last is in case of future applications for pensions -- with all US troops the same -- Great excitement in France, over sensational developments in the Dreyfuss case -- Genl Henry commits suicide and another general resigns --

Clear & pleasant -- At home most of day -- no chills -- cured, I think -- Jason Libbey and Curtis Seagraves, who left here June 1 for work at the Keswick mine, northern California during University vacation, returned this morning to resume their studies -- They got in about 3 months work to very good advantage & look none the worse for it -- good boys. Cold night --

Same -- warmer -- Home all day -- Evening down town -- Met Jim Grant, old Gold Hiller -- from Bodie, for SF -- Guy Walts of Reno -- Sam's chum -- has gone to Genoa to take charge of & open the public school there -- good position & good, capable young teacher -- Quite heavy frost last night & some the night before, all up & down the river -- First of the season -- Tonight warmer -- no frost --

Conventions of the Democratic and Silver parties tomorrow and next day, make Reno lively -- much buzzing -- I had a chill between 3 & 4 oclock this morning -- not very violent, but a chill all the same --

130 -- Democratic State Convention The Greatest Political Gathering of all John Mackay in San F -- Sutro Will Contested

Wednesday Sept 7

Same -- Democratic State Convention today -- held in [Clough & Cushy's?] hall -- Effected temporary organization, appointed committees on credentials, order of business, platform, etc and at 3 PM adjourned till 10 AM tomorrow -- Then the Silver Party, State Convention starts in and a fusion of the two parties is figured upon -- The Silver delegates have already arrived, making over 200 in both conventions -- The numerous candidates, friends, lookers on, etc make up biggest lot of the kind I ever saw -- In fact I never saw two conventions with full delegations at the same time in one town before -- Reno is filled to overflowing with the most prominent men of the State -- Very lively times are expected tomorrow -- John W Mackay and son Clarence & wife arrived in San F from the East, by northern route yesterday for a few weeks visit -- Edgar E Sutro, son of [Sdolph?], has brought suit at SF to contest his father's will -- grounds insanity, undue influence, etc -- insane since 1882 -- The French government has today concluded to

Senator Jones in San Francisco Vardy and Lamy

grant a revision or retrial of the Dreyfus case -- The Populist primary for delegates to county convention took place here today -- Convention to be held on the 17th inst -- same day as the Democratic and Silver conventions --

Thursday Sept 8

Same -- warmer -- AM I worked at clearing the front yard of dried weeds and rubbish -- PM & evening down town -- Silver Party, convention commenced at Wheelmen's Hall -- organized and got as far as nominations -- holding evening session & adjourned till 10 AM tomorrow -- Democrats also in session, somewhat stormy over seating Humboldt delegation -- got as far as nominations & adjourned till 10 AM tomorrow -- Lots of buzzing & lots of candidates -- town full of 'em -- The great question of fusion is now the stumbling block with both parties, each waiting for the other to be the first to propose -- The Evening Reno Gazette says: The Dems may nominate George Russell for Governor and a full state ticket if no fusion is effect -- Met Geo Vardy and Geo Lamy today --
