the week -- I was about town some -- observing, etc, and sat up most of the night writing a four page letter to the Gardnerville Record, George I Lamy's weekly, Gardnerville, Douglas Co, Carson Valley, Nev.

Monday Sept 19

Clear & pleasant -- First day of the Nevada State Fair -- commenced at noon with band of music on street. It went out to the race grounds, with quite a following during the PM, so there was a very fair attendence for the first day -- cattle getting in, and a very good start on exhibits at the Pavilion -- Got my letter off all right for Gardnerville by morning train -- PM I fixed up a nice picture, belonging to Mrs. Lindsey, which she has sent for -- lithograph -- 20 x 28 entitled "Abandoned," representing

a horse harnessed to wagon, his mate lying dead, also his master, from an Indian raid, on the Plains -- Put in new glass & fixed it up in good shape -- Evening down town -- Met Henry Mayenbaum, lawyer, who used to be my next neighbor at Austin -- Been up to Carson, on business, & going home to San F tonight -- Numerous soldiers from Carson came down on a 30 days furlough this evening -- Been paid off, so many of them got on their beer & had jolly good time -- Bed at 11, very tired & sleepy -- Committee of Comstock mining supts at Va made report, Sept 12, in favor of pumping out
