telegram from John W Mackay San Francisco telling that Judge Rising fell dead at 1 oclock today in San F -- PM by request of Nate Roff of the Journal I wrote an obituary editorial on Rising's death and left it at Journal office for morning's paper -- The burning out of tunnel No 13, west of Truckee with adjoining snow sheds has cut off all trains completely -- no mail from Cal today, also & don't know when -- All trains from the East stop at Truckee or here -- accumulating -- Telegraph says the great railroad shops at Sacramento also burned last night -- great calamity for Sacramento, throws hundreds out of work, and shops probably not to be rebuilt there, but at Los Angeles -- This PM I got sample ballots from County clerk for self, and Sam & Alfred -- for election tomorrow -- Evening I attended last grand Republican rally at Opera House -- Bonfires, anvils, & brass band -- Big house -- speeches by State & county candidates Bragg, Turrittin, Ring, O'Brien, Lothrop, Williams, Button, Blakeslee, & Hodgkinson -- also by RL Fulton & Rev F Vernon Jones -- Bed 11 -- cold -- Judge Rising was about 61 yrs of age.

Same -- General State Election day -- Schools and sloons closed and everybody attending to election -- At 9 AM I cast my first vote in Reno, in the
