letters from wife and one from Sam both tabooing me worse and worse -- Evening sent Brief letter to wife, inclosing Eunice's and Bessie's -- Busy day in Legislature as usual and evening session of Senate considered the woman suffrage amendment to State constitution to amend article 2, by striking out, wherever it occurs, the word "male." After much argument it was lost by vote of 7 to 5 -- 2 absent -- no "constitutional majority" -- Bed 11 -- Still very blustering & cold -- but no snow or rain --

Same -- Evening I sent short note to George R Vardy, Wells Herald -- "Yours of the 27th the ultimo received which closes as follows: "I do not find that I can pay you at the rate of $5 per letter, but send you $25 at my earliest convenience -- Is this satisfactory?" It will not be satisfactory you send it at once, and not "within a few weeks," thus proving that you are not a "dead beat" as you term it. Yours Alf Doten. Big busy day in Senate -- held evening session also -- Bed at 12 -- wind moderated very much -- clear and cold -- Senator Williams, $3 today --

Clear & pleasant -- No storm following the big three days wind -- The old sign failed this time -- Evening at the county court house -- Citizens meeting

Same -- Very busy days work, but no Senate session in the evening -- Assembly held session Bed 12 -- Ernst $5 --

Sunday March 5

The same -- PM and evening engaged in writing & copying a long letter to wife -- Wrote on the Senate chamber till 11:30 -- Bed 12:30 --

Monday March 6

Clear & very pleasant -- warm -- Legislature in big session -- being the 50th and last day, but they had too much business for it & will take a day or two longer -- no pay after the 50th day -- must work for nothing -- No Senate session this evening but the Assembly did -- Had up the Woman Suffrage bill -- crowded with ladies but bill was lost -- 15 to ___ -- Bed 12 -- Finished my long letter to wife this evening in Senate chamber -- 8 pages -- to be sent tomorrow -- Also inclosed "Decayed Veneration" the Alfred cursing and abusing episode -- Received kind brotherly responsive letter from John H Dennis, Reno today --

Same -- Big legislature work -- finished my 8 page letter to wife and sent it to her with my "Decayed Veneration" sketch inclosed -- 4 pages more -- Bed 12 -- Comins 5

Wednesday March 8

Variable -- Fierce SW wind -- threatening -- Legislature getting in big work -- Letter from wife, returning "Decayed Veneration" -- and telling me I must not come home -- must stay away from Reno, etc -- Borrowed $10 from Senator Comins yesterday & today and $5 from Lem Allen -- Evening session of both houses -- lots of ladies -- I reported Senate -- commenced at 7 oclock and out at 9 -- was at Arlington awhile -- Bed at 11 -- snowing & about an inch on the streets -- wind moderated down & looks like good snowstorm -- Legislature will close tomorrow --

Kelly of Austin -- Evening session of both houses at 7 and till 9:30 -- plenty of lady audience -- both houses this evening agreed to adjourn sine die at 12 N -- noon -- tomorrow -- Bed at 11 -- clear --

Friday March 10

Clear, variable -- The Senate started in at 9 AM -- Assembly at 10 AM -- 54th day -- Passed a few bills & resolutions, made nice parting speeches -- Lem Allen, Speaker of Assembly was presented with nice watch chain, and speaker pro tem H H Coryell, a fine gold watch -- Both houses adjourned sine die at the noon hour 12 N, and thus ended the 19th session -- I reported both houses & finished up my work and cleaned up at 4 PM -- Nate W Roff paid me my $5 salary and last for present week -- Also received $1.20 in postage stamps from the Salt Lake Tribune "for Correspondance published Feb 20, 10 1/2 inches" -- Many of the legislators from outside left on the

Clear & pleasant -- PM was at Governors office and took list of principal bills signed by him and made laws 20 of them out 67 -- 127 in all passed by the legislature, so many yet to be passed upon -- by the Gov -- Sent it to Journal -- Took a good rest of 10 hours last night & this morning -- that did me good -- Saw Comins and other legislators off on evening train, for White Pine & other outside localities -- Bed 11

AM variable -- PM colder with furious SW wind & big dust -- Cloudy -- PM I wrote 2 two-page letters to SL Tribune & SF Chronicle & got them off on train at 6:30 -- Private note to Wm Nelson of Tribune & same to M H de Young of Chronicle called for settlement for Feb, with my statement of acct -- Evening a lively snowstorm made the streets an inch whiter -- 6 PM Harry Diamond a boy of 17 yrs brought to the Arlington on bed in a covered spring wagon, from Washoe Lake, badly wounded in right hip from shot gun -- He, brother Tom & another young man from Va or Gold Hill went
