taking a shot gun from buckboard got it discharged, taking effect on Henry -- Dr Huffaker happened to be at the lake fishing & fixed Harry up the best he could & sent him to Carson -- His mother, formerly Miss Lizzie Holman of Gold Hill was telephoned for & came down on evening train, arriving shortly after her son did at the Arlington -- The shot shattered the upper point of the hip bone, making a bad lacerated wound, but did not turn into the abdominal cavity, making a severe but not necessarily fatal flesh wound -- Harry is the eldest of 4 brothers and one sister, all born in Gold Hill -- Bed at 12 -- not snowing but cloudy & cold --

Same -- Blustering -- Visited & inspected practical operation of a newly invented quartz mill of Pratt and La Grave, et al just north of the railroad -- 2 stamps of 800 lbs striking power each placed at each end of a half circle with reciprocating movement -- reducing capacity 3 to 4 tons or more

daily, with one horse power steam engine & very little water. Col E D Boyle, Evan Williams & others present -- Neatest, suplest & most effective quartz mill I ever saw -- should meet with triumphant success anywhere in the world -- Was running 108 strokes a minute to each stamp but can run safely & effectively 150 or 160 -- The pulp ran out over amalgamated copper plates set at about 1 1/2 inches to the foot incline or 2 inches -- PM I wrote big 2 page letter to wife & received a few lines from her -- Bed at 11 -- raining lightly with good prospects for more -- "Jeromio" or Jerry Williams who died at the County Hospital, Virginia this morning was 76 yrs old -- "Yank" or Edwin Burnhan who died there yesterday was 63 --

Variable, much rain & snow last night made things pretty sloppy & muddy this morning -- was at the News office and saw the "linotype." type setting machine which has been brought from Enterprise and just set up in the News office -- Merganthalor linotype machine -- George M Humphrey of Reno, formerly US Marshall has been appointed commissary at the Utah State Prison --

50 Years From Home -- Brother Sam -From & to M H de Young -California Fails to Elect US Senator & there are Others
Saturday March 18
Clear & fine -- Just 50 years from home today -- I sailed out of old Plymouth Harbor March 18, 1849 bound for California -- Evening I commenced a letter to Brother Sam on the subject -- I received the following note from M H de Young today: "Referring to your letter of the 12th instant I would say that we did not use any of the matter itemized therein. The resume you enclosed was also unavailable -- Kindly note and oblige." Now as there were three letters itemized therein -- Feb 3, 10, 17 -- and that of Feb 3 being published in the Chronicle, I wrote a 2 page letter to de Young calling his attention to the fact, etc -- Bed 12 --

Cloudy, blustering from the Westward -- snowing in the mountains all day more or less -- PM I copied off my letter to brother Sam -- 4 pages -- & started it for Plymouth by evening mail train -- Princess Kaiulani, heir apparent to the Hawaiian throne, died at Honolulu on the morning of the 6th instant -- of inflammatory rheumatism -- 24 yrs old and unmarried -- Her mother was the princess Likelike, and her father was Governor A S Cleghorn, an Englishman -- Bed 11 --

Same -- SF papers report big rains in all California -- Rec'd $1.85 in stamps from the SL Tribune in settlement of balance due to date. I sent receipt tonight -- Total received from SL Tribune to date, in full, $11.59 -- Bed 11 --

Rainy day -- Light steady rain all last night & today soaked the whole country good -- muddy -- PM was down town as far as Johnny Myers' with George Wilcox -- Carson river is booming with watery affluence. This telegram [clipping] & others reporting Sherman's death goes the rounds of the coast papers, but later telegrams say false report -- that he is not dead, but improving all right --
