Page 1 -- 2 Degrees Above Zero -- Coldest of Winter -- 1901 New Year's Day -- Dan Stuart Arrives -- Salt Lake Tribune on Deck -- Gottwaldt Got Left

Carson City, Nevada, January 1, 1901, Tuesday

Clear and cold -- Early morning thermometer, Charley Friend's, State Weather observer stood at 2º above Zero -- J H Smith's US Weather Observer stood at 3º above -- Friend's is the best average standard, by reason of locality -- New Years Day was ushered in as usual last midnight with ringing of bells, and grand rattle of firecrackers and other explosive demonstrations and generally observed during the day, with mutual calls, good wishes, egg nog and good cheer after the old style -- Dan Stuart, the great prize fight promoter arrived on morning train, from the East, and presumably studying up another big fight like that of Corbett and Fitzsimmons three or four years ago, under his direction -- I received 10 copies of the Salt Lake Tribune, New Years number this morning -- 76 pages! My Nevada review in it in good style -- 3 columns -- Also recd 3 pages of a letter from Reno Journal office -- fourth page evidently accidentally left out, as no wind up or signature to it -- Think it was from W M Gottwaldt, as it had reference to mining information I wrote him for

the Salt Lake Tribune which came today -- His too slow -- Wm Crisler re-elected constable of Carson in Republican ticket at the recent election has been getting crazy for some time past and this evening got violent and fighting at the Arlington Home -- Had to be taken to jail for safe keeping. In the last drawing of the Beneficencia Publica Mexican lottery, Nick Wylie & myself, as partners drew a terminal prize of $1.25 according to published list -- Bed 12 -- Bill Crisler has a nice wife & two or three children residing here. His wife was Minnie Pohl of Gold Hill.

Wednesday Jan 2

Cloudy and cold with furious west wind all day & evening -- snowing in the Sierra -- Morning mail sent copies of the Tribune to James H Kinkead and J W O'Donohue, Virginia City and to wife, also gave copy to Dunn of the Carson News and to J H Smith weather observer, and to Harry Day -- The postage on each that I sent by morning mail came to 5 cents, which is the cost of each "five cents a copy" -- the 76 pages weighing over 16 oz -- 1 cent for four ounces, or fraction of 4 oz -- Evening at Arlington

Thursday Jan 3

Another furiously windy day -- AM wrote a 2 page letter for L P Hobart, Lawson P Hobart, to Hon M R Lyon, Mose Lyon, formerly of Va City but now landlord of the [?] House, Hollister, San Benito, Cal. The wind was extra furious at daylight this morning -- from the SW -- kept at it all day, but moderated a little about 11 oclock -- in the evening and commenced raining lightly -- Bed 12 -- Dined with Hobart at the Arlington at 6 PM -- Trimmed my toe nails this morning -- difficult job --

Friday Jan 4

Rainy more or less all day -- moderate and muddy -- Plenty of snow falling in the mountains -- 6 inches at Virginia this morning & more falling -- Sent a page letter to Gottwaldt -- acknowledging receipt of his delayed courtesy, etc -- Leaking roof made me more trouble & use of a wash tub to catch it during night & today -- Bed 12 -- cloudy & threatening more use for wash tub -- Got letter from wife returning Eunice's letter and inclosing

1900 -- all about the Carpenter Worm & "an enemy to our elms" -- by Samuel B Doten -- In the preface Sam is registered in Station Council, etc as S B Doten, B.A. Entomology -- on the Station Staff -- So there he is regularly installed as one of the Professors of the University -- Dan Stuart left for San Francisco today --

Saturday Dec 5 [Jan 5]

Rainy -- Variable -- Moderate rain fell during last night and this morning -- clouds broke toward noon, allowing pleasant sunshine -- Toward evening rain set in again and kept at it for the night -- I sent a page letter to wife -- Bed 12:30 -- raining lightly -- Snow fell all day good in the high Sierra --

Big Rain and Snow Storm -- Hobart Goes Home -- 1901 Comstock Snowed Under -- My Home Shower Bath Uncle Billy Cradlebaugh Dead -- New County Commissioner's Meeting --

Sunday Jan 6

Moderate and very rainy -- About 2 inches of snow covered the town in early morn soon changed to rain and continuing steadily all rest of day & into night -- snow in the mountains, very much falling steadily all through this storm -- more snow in the Sierra now than for last 3 Winters all put together -- L C Hobart started out in his one horse cart rig for Sutro about 1 PM in the rain, said he had to -- Only 17 miles from here to Sutro, which is 3 1/2 miles below Dayton -- The Comstock is reported snowed

under -- The water privilege through the roof and ceiling of my room is flowing finely, requiring the wash tub's constant use as a calamity catcher. In fact my room resembles a shower bath to a certain extent -- Old Uncle Billy Cradlebaugh died this PM at his home, Cradlebaugh's bridge, on Carson river, 6 miles south or up the river from Carson -- 83 years old in April next -- Native of Circleville, Ohio & came here in about 1850 -- unmarried -- Mexican war veteran -- Born April 22, 1817 -- Bed 12 -- raining lightly --

Variable & cold -- AM clear -- PM cloudy -- evening snow squalls whitened the town -- Bed at 12, cloudy and very freezing --

Same -- Some heavy snowsqualls in early morning left an inch or so of snow which did not all melt off during the day -- Finished reading "Eben Holden" this evening -- Like it very much indeed -- Was about town in PM -- got 1/2 doz calendars from as many sources and will send one or more of best to
