& very prudently for fruit killing frosts have often got in their nefarious work past the middle of May and even into 1st of June -- Fruit all right now but -- Got through reading "Robert Greathouse" and returned it to Harry Day this PM. Dont like it -- Not well written or constructed -- Semblance of truth & historical in some instances, but too prosy in love story, incidentals, legal dialogues, etc, too wildly imaginative and Munchausenish, incongruous, inconsistent etc -- Good material poorly worked up -- Attained considerabe degree of notoriety as a early Comstock story or novel, founded upon some facts in noted legal contests of conflicting mining claims, unprincipled proceedings mining rascalities etc -- bringing in the semblance of sundry leading mine manipulaters, legal lights, etc -- Bed 12 --
