and made a most vigorous search for it, for I felt it to be a calamity -- Swept room completely and found it -- Never happier in my life -- Weather service predicts fine cool summer weather during this carnival week -- The gentle breezes from the west today shook up the decorations considerably today, blowing down most of the Chinese paper lantern strung across the street at frequent intervals with other decorations, flags, etc.

104) Big Carnival Opening -- Wife $5 Will W Booth

Tuesday July 2

Same -- High west wind blew down a couple of the Midway show booths this PM -- About 100 of the Midway material folks, women & men etc arrived this AM from San Francisco etc -- Town full of strangers already, and big crowd to come in morning -- Bed 12

Wednesday July 3

Same -- Carnival commenced at 8 o'clock AM, engine house bell 20 strokes -- tennis game, base ball -- Band played up & down street -- Midway shows all opened -- I attended two: the "coon" show, 15 cts and "Baby Kranse," 10 cts -- 2 extra carloads from Reno -- Met my son Alfred on street, opposite the Post office -- Fakir tables & booths everywhere -- Bed 12 -- My son Alfred delivered me a unsealed letter from wife with $5 PO order inclosed -- wrote a page nice letter to Will W Booth acknowledging receipt

and admiration of his paper the Tonopah Bonanza -- took it to the morning train all right, and returned it in my pocket unmailed -- And I did shove into the Post office as soon as I could afterward --

Thursday July 4

Clear, pleasant and just right -- Special trains from Reno, brought about 2,500 people -- also 4 or 5 hundred from the Comstock, notwithstanding they held a little local celebration up there -- Flags and [decorations all right -- Big parade just before noon -- Marshal Flanagan & aids horseback -- 14 young ladies, horseback -- Carson Band, Woodmen afoot -- over a dozen floats -- Fire Dept -- Indian Band and school floats, etc -- Over a thousand people in it -- Exercises east side of State House (see program) -- I was about town considerably -- met Sam Pidge et al from the Comstock, Sam especially -- The great relay race, wheels, PM, Reno won -- Evening I took ride on smallest railroad in the world 10 cts and paid 25 cts to see theater, "Little Egypt" -- Bed 12 -- Four of the floats carried pupils of the Indian School -- Escorted by their band, about 40 pieces -- They also had a small Gordon press printing 8 x 6 dodgers distributing as they passed along -- This what is said:

Friday July 5

Same -- Town still crowded from outside localities -- PM fine parade of the Queen along the main street, with band, floats etc -- Great fun, racing, broncho busting, lassoing, etc at race track -- Evening exercises and dancing before the Throne, at State House, east side -- Big floor for the purpose -- Evening I attended shows of Midway: "Poses Plastique", "Art Exhibition" -- Juvenile Show and "Little Egypt" -- Bed 12 -- Fun still going on -- I got a card letter from Fred C Boyce -- Midway, BC, and Harry Day also got a joint letter for Harry & I, from Fred -- Bed 12 -- The 4th of July celebration at Virginia was as good as could be expected considering the times and facilities. It was after the usual style, parade and Opera House exercises, WE Sharon President, Frank P Langan, Orator, foot racing, games etc on C st, and ball at National Guard Hall in evening --

Last Day of the Carnival -- "Mardi Gras" -- 1901 Reno and Virginia Stood -- In -- Special Trains A Grand Procession Midway Closing -- Fire!

Saturday July 6

Same -- warmer -- 94º -- Mardi Gras and closing day of the Carnival -- Everybody supposed to be en masque -- I made one out of a bit of bunting, green, with a red nose -- lots of racing & other fun down at the race track, didnt attend -- Evening, King Rex arrived with his retinue and was given the key of the City -- AT 7:30 PM special train brought about 200

from Reno, and one from the Comstock about 50 -- Grand procession right then, southward from the Depot -- Several floats, Queen, Maids of Honor to the Queen, etc -- Everybody masked & joined in the queerest and most hilarious fantastic procession I ever saw -- clowns and acolytes & all that sort of thing -- Evening big dancing on the floor constructed on the lawn, east side of the Capitol Park -- I was there awhile -- electric lights, bully band etc -- Plenty of fun, more than ever -- all over town -- Plenty of fun, more than ever. All over town plenty of fireworks -- Capitol Park beautifully illuminated -- chinese lanterns, etc -- Bed at 2 -- very tired, yet, glad -- The Midway shows ran late tonight for their closing -- Fire about 10 in evening -- fire destroyed couple of buildings in Chinatown --

Carson -- But I think it must be for my son Alfred Doten. Shall forward it back to Reno anyhow -- Was down at the Appeal office for an hour or so this evening, & saw it go to press at 9:30 -- morning paper -- nothing in it -- queer journalizing -- Alfred's letter was postmarked West Point July 3, 8 AM 1901 -- Reno July 7, 8 PM, '01 --

Same -- Got item into the News about "The Reno Workmen" -- [clipping prev. pg] -- Wrote & sent page letter to Nelson of Tribune relative to my compensation in the big railroad case -- Met Alfred on street this PM & gave him his letter I rec'd yesterday -- says he is going home to Reno tomorrow evening -- Bed 11 -- My good old watch failed on me this morning -- had stopped at 1:30 & wouldn't wind up, so I took it to Charley Friend's for repairs -- He doctored it last time, nearly 5 yrs ago & been all right ever since till now -- attack of "heart failure" --

Wednesday, July 10

Same -- PM attended Board of Pardons -- wrote & sent page letter to H F Pavola, No 31 Commercial Row, Reno, inclosing my item on "The Reno Workmen" -- Evening took a similar item to the Appeal for morning but they said couldnt till day after tomorrow morning -- My old landlady, Mrs Kelly returns to
