Cloudy & threatening -- Rose at noon, having got my sleep up pretty well -- PM as usual -- Evening office as usual -- Through at 2 -- Bed 3 -- Left Col Shaw in office when I came away, very intent on reading up the New York exchanges -- Unusually busy for him -- Evidently trying to do penance for his bad behavior and neglect of his position of late -- Perhaps will read himself to death before morning --

Centennial struck it & quit meeting Grants Memoirs Vol 1

Wednesday Dec 16

Hasy & cool -- At noon held meeting of Centennial Trustees at Odd Fellows Building -- Present Kingle, myself, President Williams, & Secy Flanningham -- Overhauled lot of bills sent over by Supt Wheeler -- Mine shut down about a week ago -- for season-- Had just reached bed-rock at 250 feet, & found gold bearing gravel -- Another meeting next Saturday -- Received 1st volume of Personal Memoirs of US Grant, just arrived -- $5 -- Paid agent C A Mather for it. Evening -- office as usual -- Home at 1:30 Bed 2:30

Clear & pleasant -- as usual -- Bed at 3:30 --

Friday Dec 18

Same -- Rose at 12 -- Mining day -- as usual -- Home at 2 -- wrote letter to A Richardson Agt Cal Associated Press, San Francisco enclosing bill $20 for press telegrams

furnished by me during the months of September, & October last -- Have received no response to my letter of Oct 31, so I send this -- Bed at 5 --

Saturday Dec 19

Same -- as usual -- Dan Delaney, shot by officer Linehan a week ago last Thursday morning died at 3 pm -- leaves a wife & 5 children -- He was a miner, working at the Combination shaft -- came off shift in morning passed his home to go down town & get drunk -- He had row with officer & got shot in breast and groin -- Strong

At Reno Hammond girls with us

evening's work -- Through at 2 -- Home -- Bed at 5 -- going to Reno in morning & have engaged Billy the Janitor to wake me at 7

Sunday Dec 20

Cloudy -- Took morning train at 8 for Reno -- Very sleepy all the way down -- Arrived at noon -- Found all right -- The Hammond girls, Katie and Louise are now stopping with us for their vacation at Bishop Whitaker's school, which commenced on Thursday, for 3 weeks -- Evening, banjo & songs awhile -- Bed 9

Big Rain Coroner's Inquest

Monday Dec 21

Very Rainy -- Commenced at 5AM & rained all day all over the country & coast -- Left at 7:10 AM for Va -- Arrived at 10 -- PM attended & reported Coroner's inquest in Dan Delaney killing -- continued tomorrow -- Office till 2 -- Bed at 4 --

Tuesday Dec 22

Clear & fine -- Air glorious and pure from its yesterdays washing, and all the gutters and streets washed good -- also the sewers flushed out -- PM I was at the same coroner's inquest again and took down testimony -- got rest of it in the evening from coroner Stoddard also verdict of jury -- Through at 2 -- Home -- Rained -- Bed at 3:30 --

Catheters Forefathers Day Rain Kinehan's Examination

Cloudy during the evening, and about 9 oclock a smart shower of rain fell for about 15 minutes -- I sent a letter this evening to H P Wakelee & Co druggists etc, San Francisco, with $3 greenbacks enclosed for one dozen No 4, flexible, best English catheters, to be sent to me by mail -- Forefathers Day today -- No note of it except a few lines by me in the Enterprise this morning --

Wednesday Dec 23

Clear & pleasant -- PM reported the examination of Patrick Linehan before Justice Kehoe for the killing of Dan Delaney -- Bob Lindsay was there, as counsel for

the prosecution, with Dist Atty Stephens -- Deal and [Mack?] for defense - At 3:30 postponed till 10 AM tomorrow -- Office as usual -- Through at 2 - Home -- Bed 3:30

AM clear -- PM cloudy -- evening showering -- Rose at 9 -- shaved -- went to Justice

Kehoe's court & reported continued examination of Linehan -- Concluded at 12 N -- Then attended meeting of trustees of Centennial, in Odd Fellows Building -- Supt Wheeler & others there besides the Board -- Overhauled bills & accounts -- Voted to pay all bills -- Then went out to Chollen and Hale & Norcross and got mining

Christmas Eve John Mackay Snow & Rain

items -- Went to Con Va office for same purpose -- met John Mackay there, He came up from San F Monday, & goes East tonight -- Mining report today, as no paper tomorrow -- At 7 PM went with Bob Patterson to his residence corner of Tayler & F sts to see Christmas tree of his little daughter "Elva" set up for tomorrow night -- About 20 of his old stiff friends there, and we all had some egg-nog & I went back to office -- hard nights work -- Through at 2 -- Home -- Bed at 5 -- snowing, raining, & slushy -- Christmas Eve last evening -- lots of drinking and folks ranging the streets having a good time --

Friday Dec 25

Cloudy & threatening -- Rained about 4 AM then froze, making it quite icy - Rose at 6:45 -- Left on the 8 AM train for Reno -- Had along a demijohn of sweet cider 1 gallon from Hatch's store, $1 -- also 4 bits worth of shrimps -- Found all right at home & greatly excited over the lots of presents from our folks in the East, by mail -- A perfect bonanza -- as good or better than any Christmas

yet -- Eunice also sent a big box of presents -- The Hammond girls, who are [stopping] with us, also received a big box full of presents from their folks in Austin -- PM Alfie managed to drop his new red morocco purse, from the East, containing 3 bits, a lot of beech nuts, some string, 2 buttons and other treasures down a

Alfie's Purse -- My little box from Lizzie Boxberry Plums Snow Home to Va

privy hole - I had to tear up the seat and fish some time for it but I got it -- cleaned it up etc -- Among the few small presents I had was a little box from Lizzie at Plymouth -- it contained a handfull "Wintergreen" or "Boxberry" plums, something I havent seen since '49 -- nearly 40 years -- Bed at 10 --

Saturday Dec 26

Cloudy & more or less storming -- Snow falling lightly at a few times, for a few minutes -- Thick about an inch, fell -- Home to Va on mornig train -- Knocked around as usual -- Bed at [5?] --

Sunday Dec 27

Cloudy & cold, with one or 2 slight flurries of snow almost enough to whiten the ground -- Bed till 12 -- shaved & was about town, in office etc -- After dinner I went home & slept couple of hours till 7:30 -- Then went & attended regular monthly meeting of the Pioneers ---- one hall on st -- President T B Storer, Dr Delavan, Charley Brown and myself -- not a quorum, so we had to quit -- I went home -- read myself sleepy -- laid down & slept 2 hours -- up, read, etc -- Bed at 4 --
