More Rain Sam Woolcock Killed

raining at quite a lively rate -- and apparently good for lots of it before morning -- The butcher shop showed finely this evening of course, and everybody bought lots of things at the variety & toy stores, Wright's, Sower's and Hopkins' -- When the 5 oclock PM shift was coming off, at the Lander, Sam Woolcock, a Cornish miner about 50 yrs old, in attempting to get on the cage, at the 600ft level, fell to the 800 and into the -- swamp -- of water which was 200 ft deeper -- he fell through the chairs, or iron tracks across the 700 & 800 levels, and lost both arms -- His

body was grappled for & recovered, but not his arms -- He was a single man, but a mighty good one He was leader in the Christmas carols last evening and his Cornish fellow Americans miss him this evening & a gloom is cast over all their singing & Christmas festivities --

Thursday Dec 25

Clouds and sunshine -- Rather of a nice Christmas Day -- I was about town most of the day -- PM I got a 6 bit chicken at Charley Richards' market and stewed it, with potatoes, etc & had a nice Christmas dinner all by myself -- Evening down town till 11 -- Home -- overhauled & burned letters etc till 5 oclock -- Bed -- Had

Cloudy & wintry -- PM light snow occasionally -- Evening heavy snow -- Funeral of Sam Woolcock very fully attended -- Over 300 miners on foot, -- I walked in the procession down through town, & turned out -- One of Sam's arms not yet found -- Evening at home -- had late dinner of fried herring -- at heartily & got asleep in chair -- Waked up at 10 and went down town -- Snow 6 inches deep, & still falling,

1st big snow $15 greenback Lizzie with $5 Mary with $10

lightly -- Home at 12 -- Went to overhauling, sorting out and destryoing stale documents, letters papers etc -- Got through at 5 -- Bed at 6 -- Letter from wife this morning contained a $10 greenback, from herself, and a letter to me from Lizzie with a $5 greenback --

Saturday Dec 27

Clear and fine principally -- Slept till 9 1/2 AM, from 6 -- About 8 inches of snow on a level -- Lots of sleighs out -- PM at home -- odd jobs -- Evening, wrote to Lizzie acknowledging receipt of the $5 -- Was down town awhile -- Bed at 11 -- Cloudy & threatening more snow --

noon today I got a night telegram from Jones, San Francisco, asking: "Where will a letter reach you, mailed on Tuesday next?" I filed a night dispatch at once, in response, saying: "Send here, but God's sake dont fail, or I be left out in cold, sure. Meanwhile assure me by telegraph." PM I went up to Mrs Booth's -- Helped Ed finish his play -- Staid to supper -- Miss Villa Hunt, a teacher of dancing stopping there -- Getchell & wife, old lady, Ed, Miss Hunt & the three little boys & myself at table -- After supper had long chat with old lady. Home at 10 --

Wrote letter to wife, took it to hotel, read etc, and Bed at 2 -- Clear & cold 12 deg above zero --

Monday Dec 29

Cloudy, chilly, snowy, mean day -- PM was up to cabin -- Evening at home -- Wrote to wife as usual, and also to Lieut Gov Laughton -- down town awhile -- Home -- Wtore letter to send to SD Baker, and one to send to W Kimball, Secy M Davidson Lodge No 3 -- Odd jobs of sewing etc -- Bed at 4 -- 14 deg above zero -- Mill started up again this morning --

Tuesday Dec 30

Clear & pleasant -- but cold -- At noon I waded through the snow up to the Blue mine to see Tom [tvey?] -- Didnt see him, as he was down at work in the mine -- Went to cabin and worked fixing to pack up -- Took home a bagfull of wood -- Evening

very cold -- At 11 only 3 above zero -- Was down town awhile -- Home -- ate, read, wrote, slept and contrived, & went to bed at 4 1/2 -- 8 above zero -- Got a night message from Jones today, date San F yesterday, 29th -- "Will write you in a day or two. Will do what I can" -- I replied with night message: Caucus, Carson Sunday -- I not being there will be left out cold. Appreciable emergency. Telegraph things. Too late for letters." Chubbuck also telegraphed t oSchiveley asking when I was coming -- Said wife was in Gold Hills at the Institute -- was stopping at Stevenson's -- I think he said --

The same -- About town -- PM got a telegraphic oder on Wells Fargo & Co from Jones, for $650 -- Couldn't get it chased, as it was after banking hours -- Evening about town -- Home -- read, and etc -- Bed at 5 --

Centennial and Odd Fellows dues paid

Clear, and pleasant -- lots of sleighs out, and a sort of New Years feeling generally perceptable -- I was about town settling up my bills, with the money I Received from Jones -- Sent $18.50 in letter to SD Baker, to pay my last Centennial assessment -- which was carried by him for me, without advertising -- Also enclosed $11.50 postal oder in letter to W Kimball, Secy of MT Davidson Lodge, LOOF in payment

of my dues to date -- Evening down town -- Home reading, writing etc -- Didnt go to bed at all --

Packing Up -- Rent Paid -- Getchell, Williamson & Smith left for Carson this Friday morning I saw them off

Friday Jan 2

Cloudy, foggy & snowy -- There is a good honest foot in depth of snow covering the face of the country -- Slept little while this morning on bed in clothes probably 3 hours -- PM was up to cabin packing up things in readiness for leaving -- Evening ditto -- Was there till 12 1/2 -- Home -- Worked packing, desk, trunks etc -- Paid Mrs Timlin my rent this evening -- owed her 2 months -- $7 per month -- and part of another -- Paid her 20 -- for rent up to the 13th of the present month -- I collected from the county central committee this PM, $6, for my services as election clerk, on 2 occasions -- $3 sack [illegiable] couldn't complete my packing so had to abandon it -- packed trunk & valise hastily & at 4 John Wallace came

with bus & took me to the Clifton depot, en route for Reno --

Saturday Jan 3

Cloudy & thickening -- Locomotive off track near Ledlie -- Waited 5 hours when train came in -- Started straight back & I on board at 9 AM -- Arr at B.M. at 1:30 PM too late to intercept West bound train -- Had to stay in BM -- Miserable calculation on my part & bad luck -- After supper I went with Walter Davis to his home --
