home to Gold Hill next Monday, Saw him off - worked late in office & read at home some - Bed at 5 - Painting hard for last 2 or 3 hours -

Rain Snow Old Editorial Chair Arrives Friday April 3 Stormy - Morning about 2 inches of snow covered everything - rained and snowed more or less all the AM - Very sloppy - Had to wear my rubbers - Was up to Savage office & got items on Hale & Noroross, & Choller, from Supt Keating - PM wrote mining report as usual - Evening worked in office - bed at 2:30 - Partially clear

Saturday April 4 Cloudy - PM very light sprinkle or two of rain - My old editorial chair, bequeathed to me by old man Lynch who had the News before I did, arrivd from Reno this morning, & I had pleasure of sitting in it at the Enterprise office today at my regular work - Bed at 2 - still cloudy -

Easter Sunday Rain Grent Reported to be Dying - Clouds and sushine - PM worked in office stratigening up thing about my desk, etc, Evening about town some - Great attendence at the churches, it being Easter Sunday - Home & overhauled the drawers, etc of my desk - Badly demoralized as yo contents, through bad handling - Bed at 5 -

Monday April 6 Clear & pleasant - rose at 10AM - Work as usual - Bed at 2:30

Tuesday April 7

Cloudy, with 1 or 2 light sprinkles -- About 10 oclock in the evening a smart shower fell -- Grant for several days has been telegraphically reported to be dying slowing but surely, from cancer at root of his tongue, and throat, according to the doctors, and tonight telegrams said he was thought to be dying from

Grant Dying? His Doctors

Hemorrhage therefrom but at 10:30 was resting comfortably -- I to bed at 2 -- Great interest manifested by people everywhere regarding Grant & his condition -- I don't believe his doctors know much more about his disease that* Garfield's doctors did about his wound -- May not be cancer at all --

Wednesday April 8

Clear and pleasant, as usual -- Work as usual -- Home at 2 -- read & wrote awhile -- Bed at 4 --

Thursday April 9

The same -- Bed at 2 --

Friday April 10

Cloudy, with a few light April showers during PM & evening -- Mining report day -- Got along finely -- Bed at 1:30 --

Monday April 13

Cloudy, with some nice showers in the morning -- Work as usual -- This evening I called on S D Baker, Secy Centennial, & paid my present assessment $18.50, taking his receipt therefore -- Home at 1 -- wrote letter to Chas Dondero San F -- Bed at 2 --

Tuesday April 14

The same -- The Hale & Norcross stock & mine excitement which has grown since I have been here broke today -- quite a backset from recent good prices -- Big

Hale & Norcross Boom Masquerade Ball S D Baker Paralyzed Osbiston & Craphy arrive

masquerade ball tonight at Piper's Opera House, by Hall & Zimmer's band -- I was there in time to see the grand tableau and [entree?] About 70 couples -- Galleries crowded with spectators at 50 cents each -- After got through at office I went back to see the fun -- found so many to talk with, etc, including John Piper, that I did not get to bed until 4 -- S D Baker was prostrated about 9 oclock this evening at his home, by a severe stoke of paralysis, affecting entire right side -- Fearful blow to him --

George [Seuf?], "Graphy," from Sacramento, arrived this morning to see the prospects etc -- for day or two -- Bed at 2:30 --

Hale & Norcross Boom Snow Osbiston & Graphy leave Ice

Sky variable -- High SW wind -- Big bonanza thought to be developed in Hale, & Norcross, as big improvement made in ore in west crosscut No 4 on 2900 & No 2 on 3,000 levels -- Mackay, and Osbiston both down in mine this PM -- H & N stock up big today -- Mackay and Graphy both left for California this evening -- 5:25 train -- I was down to depot and saw them off -- I wrote letter to Yerington begging pass for self & wife over the V & T RR and sent it by that train -- Called on SD Baker this PM short time -- confined to bed -- Bed at 2 -- very cold -- Ice formed tonight 1/6 of an inch thick --

Cloudy, cold & blustering, with frequent snow squalls -- Snow melted fast as fell, making streets muddy -- Mining report day -- Was out to Savage office twice to get

report on Hale & Norcross etc -- Through in office at 1 oclock at night -- Grand bal masque by Prof Gosse tonight at Opera House -- After through at office I went up to see it -- Biggest crowd I ever saw on any such occassion in this city Staid till 3 oclock when it broke up -- Bed at 3:30 Snowing lightly & freezing

Cloudy & cold, with a few light snow squalls -- Met Genl Geo E Spencer, Ex U S Senator from Alabama, on C st -- just from the East -- & stopped in to see the Comstock & hear about Hale & Norcross - Bed at 1 --

Snow R R Pass received Reno

Sunday April 19

Cloudy & cold -- Snow stormy -- Rose at 6:30, shaved, & at 8 left on train for Reno -- Bought round trip ticket $3 -- At Carson, Yerington called me into his office in the depot, & after some little persuasion gave me pass for self & wife over V & T RR till Dec 31st -- It was snowing hard when I left Va, -- more at Carson -- 2 inches at Steamboat, & still snowing -- Arrived Reno 12 N -- no snow -- Found all right at home except all children had the whooping cough - Stewed veal for supper -- Evening, banjo & songs -- Bed at 9:30

Monday April 20

Clear & chilly -- Breakfast of stewed veal & boiled eggs -- Wife saw me off on train at 7:10 AM -- Lawyer Bonnefield on board, also Henry [Nofsinger?], the

Nofsinger Bonnefield $5 Veal

capturer of Clarence Gray, the murderer of R H Scott at Paradise last December -- He was on his way to Carson to secure the State reward of $500. If he gets it he will also get $500 offered by Scott's partner, and $150 by citizens of Paradise --
