after we met -- The Col gambling badly today & this evening & night -- Jim Townsend in his place -- Through at 2 -- Home -- read etc -- Bed 4 --

Thursday July 2

The same -- Rose at 10 -- shaved -- down town & about 5 PM was at Postoffice & got letter from wife -- Wants to come up & go and see play of "Private Secretary" this evening, by the Madison Square Company, at Pipers Opera House -- telegraphed immediately to come along -- replied that it was "too late for train, will write tonight" -- Bed at 4 --

The Glorious Fourth

Friday July 3

The same -- warmer -- Busy on the mining report -- Got letter from wife enclosing pass -- Lots of flags up today and evening, for the 4th -- Lots of saloons open all night, with plenty of customers -- Play tonight was "The Professor" -- fair house -- Bed at 4 --

Saturday July 4

Clear & warm -- 83 deg -- We have to run a paper tomorrow, because from Friday to Tuesday would be too long an interval -- 2 holidays together wont do -- I telegraphed to Melville Curtis, Reno for full list of names of his company and band from Austin -- Replied "full list in Reveille of Thursday" -- Found it and

printed it tonight -- Wrote letter to wife enclosing pass & telling her to come

up on morning train -- telegraphed her also -- Was about town all day taking items -- About 9 oclock I had occasion to go to my room -- in the entry or hallway I tumbled over a drunken man and knocked my right shoulder out, I got it back directly all right -- Office till 1 [1/2 ?] -- Shoulder pained me bad, but I worked with it -- Bed at 3 -- couldnt sleep on account of shoulder --

The Austinites, Band etc in Virginia Hot

The same -- 86 deg -- At 10 AM was at train arrival -- Big crowd to see the Austin folks -- The band came, in uniform, accompanied by about 28 of the company, in citizens dress -- They played in front of the International, I took them all in for a drink with Bob Patterson -- They then marched up C street, playing, to National Guard Hall where they were entertained by the Nationals, with beer, lemonade, punch, etc & a collation -- Made it their headquarters -- Some of them were taken in carriages out to the big combination shaft -- They cruised about the city considerably taking a look at things -- PM I was with them awhile at Hall, as I knew most all of them, but most of the day I spent at home with my wife --

found a terrible fire raging -- 2 large blocks in heart of town almost -- On arrival at Reno wife went home, & I staid about depot etc, awhile chatting with the Austinites -- Home at 10 -- All well, Alfie & Goodie sound asleep in bed -- My flags were up on the house -- Mary having attended to that -- Bed at 11 --Painful nights sleep

Monday July 6

The same -- 87 deg -- Sam & Alf went nearly to the depot with me in morning -- Met lots of the Austinites -- They go home tomorrow -- Chamberlain & others will take the band out to the Insane Asylum today, to show them the concern, and give the patients some music -- On the train were the four famous athletes Duncan C Ross, Jim Cannon, Dempsey and Cleary -- Mike Smith, formerly of the Vesey House, Gold Hill was with them as agent and manager -- I was made acquainted with them all -- They are on the way over from California, having showed last at Nevada City, and will show at Pipers Opera House tonight I worked as usual today, but with very lame shoulder -- Col Shaw was at Carson when fire occurred, so he staid and

The Athlete Wrestling & Sparring Show

got all the particulars and wrote them up tonight, after he cdame up on evening train -- for morning paper, with a big diagram which he drew -- I was at Opera House and reported the performance of the athletes -- Had chair behind on of the rings & good view of the whole -- wrestling and sparring -- stripped nearly naked --

The same -- a little cooler, with much wind and dust -- Paid my rent to July 1, -- $8 -- Capt Harry Johns told me this PM that he is going to work in Crown Point tomorrow, Sam Jones having put him on -- Harry much pleased -- Worked as usual -- Evening, Berry & Fay -- comedy Co at Opera House, in "Irish Aristocracy" -- I wasnt there, but heard it was a good fair house -- Through at 2 -- Home at 3 & to bed at 3 1/2 --

Wednesday July 8

The same -- Work as usual -- Through at 1 1/2 -- Bed at 2 -- My shoulder very much better --

The same -- A little cooler the last 2 days -- About 84 deg -- Work as usual -- Through in office at 1 1/2 -- Bed at 2 1/2 --

Sunday July 12

The same -- 85 deg -- telegraphed wife I would send her letter tonight -- did so, enclosing pass -- PM worked in office -- Evening at 9 left office -- heard of a dead man found in bed in [Lents?] lodging house near corner of B st & Sutton Avenue Name Anton Anderson, a tailor by trade, stranger in this city -- Very well dressed and several dollars in his pocket -- Shot right through brain & died at once -- Been dead over 24 hours before discovered -- stunk badly -- Pistol in hand -- clear case of suicide -- I rustled round & got the items, went to telegraph office & sent
