trains arrive and leave- Bed at 10Monday Aug. 3 Clear and hot- AM a little cloudy, but sultry- About as hot this PM as yesterday- Rose at 6- Packed my journal books and some more boots etc. into my old valise- got a dragmen to take it to the train for me- Wife went to depot with me- Met Powning there- Says he sold my ticket from here to Osden for $25 and will "hand the money to Mrs. Doten"- train about 40 minutes late, in starting, owing to train from California being late- Matt Gillespie on train- He is just from Bodie by way of the Mariposa big trees and San Francisco- Doc Kirby got on at Mound My Journals tken to Va $25 Posning Very Hot Hot Mel Curtis Dr. Hamond Wife House and went on to Va- Got my valise taken up by trasfer company wagon (Hyde)- About town muchly- PM mostly in office- At 5PM- Wrote letters to Mr. Hammond-Melville Curtis and wife- Got them off by the 5:25 train- Evening hard at work in office- Col off on another drunk and gamble- Stood little while, this PM and evening in office- Bed at 4- my thermometer in my room stood 77Tuesday Aug. 4 Clear, and hot as yesterday and day before- Slept till noon- Evening got through at 1- Home at 1:30- read awhile- Bed at 2:30- Wife got $25 from Powning today, he sold my ticket for(Caledosiran) Picnic BO Whitman dead

Wednesday Aug. 5 The same- A little cooler- As usual- Bed at 2:30- Cooler Thursday Aug. 6 The same (Calecosire) picnic today at Treadway's Park, Carson- 9 cars- good crowd- I gave Capt. Hinds my ticket to go with, and he reported the ticket- with my assistance in writing up- Excurtion got back at 7 oclock- telegrams today told of sudden death of Judge B C Whitman, of apoplexy last evening- Was taken with apoplexy in Union Club room at 6 PM and only lived a few hours- Old Comstocker- Left here about 2 years ago, and went down to San F. with his wife and son, Been living there since- Through at office at 2- Bed at 3Friday Aug. 7 The same- cooler- Was on mining as usual- Lively evenings work- Through at 2- Bed at 3:30 Satruday Aug. 8 The same- Grant Memorial Services and obsequies today- Services and exercised at Opera House- Big crowd- I reported- Through office at 2- Bed 3:30Sunday Aug. 9 The same- W&e at train and met wife this morning- PM she visited the Stevensons at Gold Hill- Young Bill took her down and back in buggy- We breakfasted and dined at Chanmond's- Took a walk out on some of the northern streets after dinnerWife at Va Jas W. Marshall, the California Gold Discoverer Dies-

Evening at home - Bed at 10 -

Monday Aug 10 Clear & pleasant - Pretty warm - About 86 degrees - Breakfast at Chamond's - Wife & I visited together most of the day - at our room - PM was at office while working - At 4:30 took wife to dinner, Chamond's then to the care which left at 5:25 - Evening worked hard in office - Through at 1 - read awhile - Home at 2 - read more - Bed 3 - James X Marshall the discoverer of gold in California, died at Kelsey, Gol this monring -

Tuesday Aug 11 The same - pretty warm - as usual - Bed at 2 -

Wednesday Aug 12 The same - As usual - Evening found in Alta of yesterday news of Bob Lovery's death in San Francisco - Wrote nice notce of him - Bed at 3 -

Thursday Aug 13 The same - 92 - Evening was at meeting of Pioneers in Bob Pattersons International saloon - private room - Only 5 present - querum - adopted ''memorial of Condolence'' to be sent to the Grant family - Went to office - Fixed her up & inserted it all right for morning paper - Bed at 2:30 - Got letter from Dr. Hammond-

Hot Jounral of Senate recieved Overslept & got left - showers

Friday aug 14

Hot & sultry - 92° -- Bed 2 -- Received from Secy of State a copy of the Senate Journal for 1885 --

Saturday Aug 15

The same -- PM cloudy with one or two light showers of rain, which with the assistance of the street sprinkler made C street rather muddy -- Also a light shower about sunrise -- PM the weather being cloudy the thermometer fell to about 80° Bed at 3 --

Sunday Aug 16

The same -- Overslept myself or would have taken the 7:20 morning train for Reno as yesterday I had telegraphed wife "off by morning train, to meet you once again" -- I literally "got left," Turned over & slept till noon -- PM about

In Reno S Crescengo My lamp

town some -- At 5:25 PM took train for Reno -- Arrived at 8 -- Met wife with Sam & Alf on sidewalk by Post office & went home with them -- All well & happy -- Bed at 11 -- Got another letter from Sam Crescengo, Austin, asking about Stocks --

Monday Aug 17

Clear & hot -- PM cloudy with light shower of rain just before and after dark -- Rose at 6 -- breakfast -- wife & Bessie & the boys went to depot with me -- Through in due time -- Brought from home my "Mary & little lamb" coal oil lamp -- Went to Fredericks after I arrived & got chimneys, fitted to it -- Only 2, unbreakable

Secretary of the Pioneers to engross that Memorial of Condolence to send to Grant's family -- Took it to him, with engrossing papper to do it on -- Overhauled my journals, & made transcript of record as to time 1st V & T RR got through to G H & Va [2] Dit it for Yerington, son Ed -- Col on hand this evening -- Through at 2 -- Bed 3:30 --

Tuesday Aug 18

Cloudy & sultry -- About 12:30 big rain set in for about 1/2 and hour -- rained like the Devil, in regular old cloud burst style -- Everybody out to see it rain -- Streets sheets of water, and gutters all running full -- Sewers well [flashed?] Torrents

down the cross streets -- Not much damage done down the canyons -- Whole city & mountain got good wholesome washing off -- Bed at 2:30 -- clear & warm -- Got letter from Sam Crescengo today asking about stocks -- Got my lamp filled at trimmed all right and had it burning this night when I got home and also a little while on the evening when I happened in --

Clear & warm & pleasant -- Not quite so hot -- 85 deg -- I engrossed that "Grant Memorial" published in Enterprise of 14th & took it Lee McGown secretary -- took
